On Saturday, 11 July 2009, many, many thousands of people allowed their inner child to come out to play... in their birthday suits.

The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) sponsored the record attempt for the largest number of people simultaneously skinny dipping across North America. There were 147 clubs participating and at least seven public beaches where optional clothing or nude swimming is authorized across North America.

The individuals attending were advised it was all good, clean fun and they had a great time. Thousands of them had never, ever been nude in public before and were naturally nervous on arrival, but were committed to joining this record attempt. The management, members and staff at all of the AANR-sponsored locations made them feel welcome and comfortable as they entered this new adventure. 

When they first walked into the swimming pool areas, the participants found many people already there, all in their birthday suits. At many locations, they were assured that they would be allowed to wear their suits, if they wished – except for the actual record event, for which they would have to be nude, in order to be counted. 

Most arrived with plenty of time to spare, and found it much easier than they thought to get used to meeting and speaking with nude people. They were pleased to find the nudists were kind, considerate, helpful and welcoming. The butterflies quickly vanished, and they found themselves having a lot of fun.

As the time of the record event approached, announcements were made advising that even though Guinness World Records™ requires photographic proof of all records, it is AANR policy that no one ever has to be photographed nude, therefore an announcement would be made before any photograph was taken and they would be provided with the opportunity to turn around so they could not be identified in the picture.

The announcement was made several times, but everyone chose to stay in the water for the photograph; only a couple turned their backs. Everyone else took the attitude that they were setting a world record, and they wanted to be a full part of the event. Arms were raised in celebration at the time the photographs were taken. 

In light of the fact that Guinness World Records created the category at the request of AANR, the American Association for Nude Recreation will soon be able to celebrate this GWR achievement once the claim forms are completed, submitted to GWR and GWR has had an opportunity to adjudicate the claim. 

AANR and the various locations thank all the participants that came out and skinny dipped. All participants were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for helping in this record attempt. Everyone agreed that it really was all about good, clean fun.
