On 14 June 2009, another Guinness World Records™ achievement was established and made a dream come true for Mr C. Poovendran, who achieved the longest yoga marathon, which lasted 28 hours and during which he performed 1,019 asanas (positions).
Mr Poovendran, who is also known as yogaraj C.P. by the yoga practitioners in Hong Kong, was born in Neyveli city, India. He started his yoga training at the age of five, with his father, and gained his first yoga award – "Yogaraj" (king of yoga) – when he was just 14 years old. He has also gained the Best Demonstrator Award at the 5th International Yoga festival, the Yoga Rathna award (jewel of yoga) from the Divine Life society of Chennai, India, and the Creative/Innovation Award in 2006 from Pure Yoga International.
Yogaraj C.P., who is currently a yoga teacher in Hong Kong, also tried to entertain the public – to show his appreciation for their tireless support during the entire 28 hours – by introducing unexpected activities, such as drinking water and taking off his T-shirt during a headstand, with his eyes closed. The event was sponsored by the Tamil Cultural Association and the Indian Vegetarian restaurant Khana Khazana, where the attempt took place.
As the GWR's Adjudicator at the attempt, Tzeni Karampoiki found it an amazing experience to watch a yoga marathon going live to completion. She believes Yogaraj’s passion for yoga, and the support of the onlookers, gave him the energy to keep going for the entire 28 hours. Congratulations to all!!
