Sports Blog 14 November 2008

Hi all, the sports blog returns after a short absence because I've adjudicating across the world and been busy preparing for yesterday’s Guinness World Records Day which was a huge success. We saw the largest gathering of people in their underwear, the longest dreadlocks and Fastest time to peel and eat three kiwi fruits amongst thousands of other attempts!

But now back to sport…

In tennis the end of season Masters Cup is in its ninth year in Shanghai, China where Roger Federer (Switzerland) is hoping to stay in the competition and extend his record of most wins of the tennis Masters Cup, he already has four in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

The mid-week international friendlies are back in football with a Guinness World Record holder involved. Argentina are looking to new coach and national hero Diego Maradona to rejuvenate their current team, he made the most appearances in the FIFA World Cup as captain, a staggering 16 between 1982-1994.

There were several sporting records broken since the last blog, here are the top three.

  • Lewis Hamilton (United Kingdom) became the youngest Formula One world champion when he pipped Felipe Massa (Brazil) to the title by just one point.

  • Sébastien Loeb (France) won his fifth FIA World Rallying Championship title, the most ever.

  • The Ericsson 4 crew managed to sail 589 nautical miles in one just day during the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the furthest distance sailed by a monohull yacht in 24 hours.
