Our sincerest birthday and congratulatory wishes go out to the record holding dachshund herself, Chanel, the Oldest Living Dog who turned a very impressive 21 years old on May 6th, 2009.
To celebrate this milestone, a birthday party was held in her honor at the New York Dog Spa & Hotel. The party was sponsored by Dogswell®, a privately owned pet food company which produces the treats in which her owners, Karl & Denise Shaugnessey of Port Jefferson, New York attribute the dog’s long life to. Guinness World Records representatives Jamie Panas & Kate White attended the birthday party and presented Chanel and her owners with an updated certificate.

What:
Chanel is 147 years old in dog years and will soon be 21 years old in human years. Just like your grandma, her hair is completely white, she gets cold easily and needs glasses (or in this case, “doggles” for her cataracts).
On May 6, 2009, DOGSWELL®, the fastest growing private pet food company in America, will throw Chanel a birthday bash at the New York Dog Hotel & Spa complete with an oversized birthday cake, many canine attendees and an official presentation by Guinness World Records®. Chanel, a dachshund and resident of Port Jefferson Station, NY, is a longtime fan of DOGSWELL’s® HAPPY HIPS® Lamb & Rice treats. Her owners, Denice and Karl Shaugnessey, attribute her long life and agile hips to the tasty treat.

12:30 p.m.
New York Dog Hotel & Spa
32 West 25th Street (Between 6th Ave. and Broadway)

gregmacg, 6 months ago | FlagI know this record is probably for living dog but our dog Ebony past away January 20th and was 21 1/2 years old when she past. she was a cockapoo mix and my wife had her since she was 6 weeks old. It was a very sad time for my wife and I, like losing a family member.
No records here I guess but I wanted to share the fact that 21 isn't really that old and I wish I'd known about the record as Ebony may have held the title before she past away.
KandR, 6 months ago | FlagAlthough this is a very sweet story, I don't think that the GBR have a very reliable way of "certifyin
g" that this dog is the oldest in the world! There are at least 2 people that have mentioned in these comments that their dogs are older...an d I know of a Chihuahua that is 25...so much for GBR...and their certificat ion. From their statement I guess all you have to do is make a claim...an d they wave a wand over it to "certify" it? Old dogs are always very sweet and they have a special place in our hearts...s
o no matter whether she is actually the "oldest" I was glad to see the story.
GuinnessWorldRecords, 6 months ago | FlagFrom all the attention Chanel's birthday received as she was recognized
by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest dog we have received emails from many of you saying your dog is older. Thank you very much for getting in touch with us.
The best thing to do if you think you have a dog that is older than Chanel is to submit your claim via the 'Set a record' link on our homepage. That way your claim will be processed in the official manner and if successful
, your dog can be recognized as the world's oldest. Guinness World Records are meant to be broken as they say so we can't wait to hear from you. Good luck!
dsmensing, 6 months ago | FlagMy dog just turned 24 (in human years) in January. He is a Toy Poodle named Teddy. He still plays and runs around even though his sight and hearing are going. I am not that impressed with Chanel. I am sure there are plenty of dogs older so the title of worlds oldest is a sham...but
it is a nice gig if you can get it.
