Yo Yoing for a Cause!

Summer weather is perennial in the state of Florida, but summer vacation is over for students at Florida International University!  It’s back to work, pulling late night study sessions and writing term papers!

With their busy schedules and long hours studying, it's easy for students to fall prey to the calls of that quick meal; the fast food burger, the mighty meaty pizza, the iced caramel frappucinos!  It’s these unhealthy choices that lead people to gain weight and motivate them to go on quick fad diets to shed those pounds in a hurry!

On August 24, 2009, on their first day back on campus, FIU students came together to break the record for the Most People Yo-yoing Simultaneously!  Their goal was to help raise awareness about the effects of yo-yo (as in up and down) dieting on the health and wellness of college students nationwide.

Yo Yo record

Sponsored by Molina Healthcare, participants spent two solid minutes yo-yoing  in order to break the previous record of 493 participants.  But on this day, gathered in the meeting hall were 557 excited students all donning their bright pink and black world record breaker T-shirts!

On hand to adjudicate was Jennifer Gilmour who certified the number and helped countdown the clock.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1…they did it! The crowd roared with excitement!  Not a bad way to start the new school year - raising awareness and breaking a Guinness World Records feat!!
