GWR Day: Longest Dreadlock in the World!

On a chilly Wednesday morning we all assembled at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York as part of our week-long record-fest in celebration of GWR Day on .
It had a been a challenging week as they say and we had yet to set or break any Guinness World Records on the show but today was the day we felt it had to happen. And why were we so certain? All because of a rather special lady called Asha Mandela.
Who on earth is Asha Mandela?
Well since GWR Day in 2008 when our very own Carlos Martinez visited her in Florida, she has held the world record for the longest dreadlock. Not the longest hair (currently 18 ft 5.54 in) but for the longest dreadlock which Carlos measured at 8 ft 6 in.
So here's the scoop, Asha's hair had grown and she had unravelled her dreadlock even more so we felt sure we had a record-breaking moment on our hands. Out came hosts Maggie Rodriguez, Harry Smith, Russ Mitchell and Dave Price as waited to watch history in the making.
After some brief banter, Asha lay down and Maggie took her position as Chief One-End-of-the-Tape-Measure-Holder while we headed towards the end of the dreadlock pulling the tape measure out as we did so. Harry Smith took position at the other end making sure the long lock was straight. Dave Price shouted out the measurement:
"Ten feet...eleven feet...twelve feet...thirteen feet...............NINETEEN FEET SIX-AND-A-HALF INCHES!!!"
Congratulations Asha!!!
Another Guinness World Records Day celebration...Another Guinness World Record...!

One tall challenge for A Suit That Fits.com!

A Suit That Fits.com kindly donated Sultan Kosen the New World's Tallest Man his first made-to-measure suit. When the tailors at A Suit That Fits.com first received the Sultan's measurements they could not believe their eyes, especially when Sultans outside leg measurement was a whopping 55 inches, but sure enough the measurements were correct and the tailors got to work on this very tall order. A Suit That Fits.com have sold over 17,000 suits to date, but none of them have been of the scale of this suit and they found many problems along the way. The suit was far too long for the company suit bags, as well as the steamers and it had to be laid down in the cab on the way to Sultan’s first fitting.
Sultan said he found it notoriously hard to find clothes that fit him properly, but thanks to A Suit That Fits.com unique online system Sultan can design and order his next perfectly fitted suit with the click of a mouse and it will come delivered to his door pressed and ready to wear.
Thank you A Suit That Fits.com!

Thursday November 12, 2009 is Guinness World Records Day!!!
Back in 2003, when Guinness World Records sold its 100-millionth copy and became the highest-selling copyright book of all time, we decided to celebrate by making a day of it (so to speak)…
It would be a day that rejoices in the fun and excitement of record-breaking, and we would invite individuals and groups from all around the world to take part. We would call it…GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS DAY (OK, so it’s not overly creative but the meaning’s pretty clear…)[image]Now in its fifth year, Guinness World Records Day has grown to become a truly international event. Last year saw more than 300,000 people attempt 50-plus records in 15 different nations! Some of these included:Fastest Bed (UK)Largest Image made of LED lights (Ireland)Most Kisses Given in One Minute (France)Largest Rubberband Ball (USA)Largest Loaf of Bread (Brazil)Most Beer Steins Carried Over 40 Metres (Germany)Most Adults Reading to Children (United Arab Emirates)Longest Kebab (South Africa)If you’re currently planning to break a record, why not join the Guinness World Records Day celebrations and schedule your attempt for Thursday November 12? If your attempt is especially visual or representative of your cultural identity in some way, it can be chosen for filming and added to our international Guinness World Records Day newsreel – which is distributed to broadcast media across the globe. We also want your photos! Upload the best snaps you have of your record-breaking attempt to our GWR Day group, and we’ll include them in our website promotions – and possibly even next year’s book!So come on! Join us for Guinness World Records Day 2009 by registering your record attempt via http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/member/.

Guinness World Records is saddened to hear of the death of Michael Jackson at the age of 50.
Jackson holds numerous Guinness World Records including the most Grammy Awards won in a year, most hit singles in the UK charts in a year, best selling album of all time, longest span of No.1 hits by an R&B artist, best selling music video, highest annual earnings ever for a pop star, and most successful pop music family.
Speaking in London tonight, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday commented "I will always be immensely proud to know that Michael considered me a friend, and I know that everyone at Guinness World Records will be numb from hearing the news that this gentle, kind, shy man is no longer with us. On his last visit to the Guinness World Records office, he devoted a few valuable hours of his time being photographed with everyone, and we were all touched by his humility and willingness to please everyone present with autographs and photos. I'm honoured to have had the chance to spend some time with such a wonderfully talented artist - the man we called the Most Famous Living Man on Earth - and to present him with his favourite world record of all, the biggest selling album of all time, for Thriller, of course. He leaves behind an incredible musical legacy and a body of work unrivalled by any other performer."

It is with much sadness that we have heard that Gibson, the Guinness World Record™ record-holder for world's tallest dog, has lost one of his front legs to bone cancer. Gibson, a Harlequin Great Dane, stands an impressive 107 cm (42.2 in) tall and is a dog loved by all who know of him and those who have been fortunate enough to meet him. Owned by Sandy Hall of Grass Valley, California, USA, Gibson has been a great canine ambassador for Guinness World Records appearing on various television shows and being a part of many photo shoots and book launches. Stuart E. F. Claxton, spokesperson for the company in the USA said, "I remember working with Gibson and Sandy on a TV show and it was wonderful the reaction Gibson would get every time he came on stage. Old and young alike were in awe of this big, friendly dog, especially when he stood on his hind legs and put his front paws on the host's shoulders! Without a doubt he's the biggest in more ways than one".
Sandy has told us that fortunately the cancer was caught very early which meant Gibson could be treated quickly. Gibson is now home on the way to recovery and his overall prognosis is good. Guinness World Records wish him and Sandy all the best.

Statement: SMS Scam

It has recently come to our attention that an SMS scam is in operation in the UK, purporting to be endorsed and supported by Guinness World Records.
This scam falsely claims that GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS has selected the recipient out of thousands of phone numbers in Asia and Europe and that they have won a prize of £700,000. The sender then requires the recipient disclose personal information via email or SMS and send £630 to India before the prize can be collected.
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS LIMITED is in no way connected to these SMS messages and strongly discourages recipients to disclose personal information and/or the sending of money to this organization.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS LIMITED is in no way connected to these SMS messages and strongly discourages recipients to disclose personal information and/or the sending of money to this organization.

Ashrita Furman Becomes First Person to Hold 100 Guinness World Records SimultaneouslyNEW YORK - April 14, 2009 – Ashrita Furman reached a milestone today by becoming the first person to simultaneously hold 100 Guinness World Records when he and over 100 participants earned the world record for “A Poem / Literary Passage Recited in the Most Languages.” The historic moment was a long time in the making for Furman, who has been breaking Guinness World Records for over 30 years. New York City Councilman James F. The group beat the current record held by the International Social Service of Hong Kong, which recited “Values on Communal Harmony” in 79 different languages on November 23, 2008.
[image]The proud record-breaker had this to say about his unprecedented accomplishment, “With more than 170 nationalities represented in New York City this record celebrates the diversity of our city. While it wasn't as physically challenging as some of my other records, having this record as my 100th is very special tribute to Sri Chinmoy.”“What Ashrita did today is an amazing feat for him and Guinness World Records alike,” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records. “He has a 30-year relationship with Guinness World Records that is nothing less than stunning, breaking records around the world and proving that you don’t have to be famous to be the world’s best.”New York City Councilman James F. Gennaro (D-Queens) added, "This is exactly the type of event that should take place in the seat of New York City government. To speak and hear the precious utterances of Sri Chinmoy is truly an inspiration."

Ashrita Furman has been breaking Guinness World Records since 1979, when he completed 27,000 jumping jacks to earn his first Guinness World Record. Since then, the 54-year old health food store manager from Queens, New York has broken records on all seven continents, including completing the fastest mile on a pogo stick in Antarctica and bouncing the fastest mile on a kangaroo ball along the Great Wall of China. Furman has practiced meditation for over 30 years, which helps him keeps his concentration during marathon record attempts. Whether it be performing forward rolls for the entire 12-mile length of Paul Revere’s ride through Massachusetts or racing against a Yak in Mongolia to set the mile sack-racing record, Furman is a determined individual and a true world-class record holder!

Top 50 Games of All Time!

At the end of last week Guinness World Records decided it would be interesting to join the fascinating and often heated debate as to what are the greatest console games of all time.To see the full list please go here: http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/270209_top50.aspxSo how did we come up with our list? Well, in selecting our top 50 console games, we took all the freelancers, contributing consultants, and in-house staff who worked on Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer’s Edition and asked them to list their ten all-time best home console games (hence why arcade, handheld and PC games aren’t included) based on what they feel are worthy of note for their playability by modern standards. It’s pretty much universally-acknowledged that video games tend to get better over time. As such, many titles that were huge critical and commercial successes 10 years ago can’t live up to the standards we expect of current-gen games, this is why some older releases are not represented. This is not a list that seeks to name the most influential games of all time and the games featured are not Guinness World Record Holders by virtue of their being included. Our aim with the list was to join the fascinating and heated debate as to the greatest games of all time. Apparently some members of the media took offense at our intentions to do so, however it’s worth pointing out that there’s no such thing as a non-controversial best game list, and isn’t it great that the games industry is fluid enough to ensure this? Please take the opportunity to vote for your personal choice for greatest console game ever on the homepage of our website. We promise to post the “peoples choice” for greatest console game soon!06 March 2009

The eagerly awaited movie adaptation of the graphic novel The Watchmen has broken its first Guinness World Record: its opening in 3,611 theatres is the widest ever opening for an R-rated film.
[image]We have yet to see evidence that it will become the one-day highest-grossing R-rated opener a record currently held by Matrix Reloaded, which earned $42.5 million on its first day (and which also has the record for the widest R-rated opening, on 3,603 screens). The midnight movie opening on Thursday, however, was shown on an impressive 1,600 screens, 124 of which were IMAX. This is more than double the openings for director Zack Snyder's 300, the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. It would appear that we've not heard the last of the Watchmen... Watch this space!

Lee Redmond

Guinness World Records was deeply concerned to hear about a car accident involving Lee Redmond, who holds the record for the longest fingernails (female) at a combined length of 8.65 m (28 ft 4.5 in). Lee, of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the accident on Tuesday 10 February, when the vehicle she was riding in was involved in a collision. Sadly, her record-breaking nails were damaged beyond repair in the crash. “As a long-term friend of Guinness World Records, Lee is a fantastic ambassador for the company,” said Editor in Chief Craig Glenday, “appearing on our TV shows around the world and promoting to school children that it’s okay to be different. Losing her nails in such a terrible accident has shocked everyone here at Guinness World Records – they were such a fundamental part of her life and unique character. We all hope that she makes a speedy recovery.”

The "Gamers Bible" Returns with launch of Guinness World Record 2009 Gamer's Edition

LONDON (4th February, 2009) - The globally-recognised authority on record-breaking achievements, Guinness World Records, announces the latest and greatest in video gaming with the publication of Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer’s Edition. As Great Britain experiences the heaviest snowfall in eighteen years, launch celebrations for the UK version are postponed until 11th February.
Hailed by critics as the “gamer’s bible” in 2008, this year’s edition promises to keep gamers occupied for hours with 216 pages of original records, facts and trivia. The all new 2009 Gamer’s Edition encompasses everything from the history of gaming to individual scores and facts from all genres of video games.
Records include the Largest Virtual Army (America’s Army, with more than 8 million registered users – almost 15 times larger than the actual US Army); the Longest Drum Marathon On Rock Band (26 hrs, 40 min); Most Controls on a Video Game (Steel Battalion, which features 49 different input devices, including foot pedals, a gear level, two control sticks and a button that activates in-screen windscreen wipers); Most Successful Entertainment Product Launch (Grand Theft Auto IV); and the Most Played Online Game (Call of Duty 4, with more than 1.3 million players daily on Xbox 360 alone).
Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, says: “Our intention behind Gamer’s Edition is to offer a snapshot of the gaming universe uniquely through the eyes of Guinness World Records – in a format that appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers.”
The book covers all consoles and gaming levels, as well as a special section on banned and controversial games (pinball machines were banned in the U.S. for 34 years), War Games (Metal Gear, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor), Superhero Games (Batman, Spider-Man, Superman), Space Games (Star Trek, Wing Commander, Star Wars). The 2009 Gamer’s Edition also features interviews with key gaming industry heroes, such as Ralph H. Baer, investigates the growing craze in healthy gaming, and offers Twin Galaxies’ leaderboard of high scores and fastest times.
Concurring with Glenday’s view, records manager and gaming specialist Gaz Deaves adds: “As with the amazing achievements in the main book, we are always happy to welcome new record breakers in to Gamer’s Edition and the Guinness World Records family. Anybody who’s dedicated to breaking a record in the video gaming world can contact us with a claim through our website www.guinnessworldrecords.com/gamers.”
To celebrate the UK launch of the new edition on the 11th of February, British eccentric motoring inventor Edd China will unveil his latest wacky creation on four wheels – the Fastest Mobile Gaming Rig. Complete with all three “current generation” consoles and monitors, this unique piece of mobile furniture will tour the streets of London with three gamers onboard after setting a speed record on the A40.
Also in celebration of the UK launch, the world’s Youngest Professional Gamer, Lil Poison (Victor De Leon III), is due to visit London for the very first time on 9th February. 10-year old, Long Island (NY) native, Lil Poison claimed the title after signing with MLG recruiters as a Pro Gamer at the age of six.
Today, on the other side of the pond, reigning Guinness World Record-holder Danny Johnson will attempt to reclaim his “Guitar God” status on Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock in New York City. Johnson will try to best the previous record of 899,703 points on Guitar Hero’s toughest song – “Through the Fire and Flames”.
Even prior to its launch, 2009 Gamer’s Edition received critical acclaim from with Kotaku, stating: “With entries for professional gaming, top selling games in history, the history of hardware and Guitar Hero, the Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition looks to be a must have for fans of gaming.”

Largest cabbage dish

On 19 December 2008, the patron’s day of Prilep, the town of Prilep in the Republic of Macedonia, officially became part of Guinness World Records. 80,191 cabbage rolls or ‘sarma’, were prepared for every citizen of town; thus Prilep attempted to set a Guinness World Record under the category of largest cabbage dish. [image] The traditional sarma was prepared by the skillful hands of 160 women volunteers of the Prerodba women association, NGO Mother-Tradition and the VMRO-DPMNE Union of women. The sarma, which the size of a hazelnut, was prepared in the EURO Restaurant, and within the course of 6 hours the 160 women prepared the 80,191 cabbage rolls. [image]In order to be authentic in taste and size, the sarmas were in miniature dimensions, 10x10 mm.
Two new Chinese records

On 25 and 26 December 2008, the Zhong Lian Hotel in Dandong City, China, successfully organized two record-breaking events at the Dandong Wangtong Stadium. The records were for the most postcards sent from one location at one time – which was set at 3,316 – and for the most people completing the same dot-to-dot drawing simultaneously – which was counted at 2,490.

The two events were held as parts of two Christmas Singing parties organized by the Zhong Lian Hotel and the participants for the records were attendees to these parties. Most of the participants were from the city of Dandong, which is famous for the Yalu River, a river on the border between China and D.P.R.K. The postcards sent from the stadium illustrated the beautiful scenery around Dandong City. The purpose of these postcards was to exalt the beauty of their city and to extend best wishes for the New Year to other cities. The dot-to-dot drawings depicted the Hushan Great Wall in Dandong.

The Zhong Lian Hotel management was greatly excited at receiving two GWR certificates from the adjudicator from Guinness World Records, Angela Wu. They stated that by organizing such events, besides setting world records, they were showing their love for their home town and offering a warm welcome to all visitors to the beautiful city of Dandong.
