Carlos Martinez might not be able to bend it like Beckham (quite), but if his kick lacks a certain curve, the same cannot be said for his career path. After graduating in Psychology at the University of Valencia in Spain, Carlos then diverted into sports sciences, turned next to European Union Law, before finally landing in Guinness World Records’ New York City office as part of our adjudication team.
It was sport, in fact, that kick-started Carlos’ fascination with Guinness World Records. His first memory of the book was starting a collection of stickers of Guinness World Records. At that time he was mainly interested in the sport- related records, like the highest score in a football match, or the fastest time to score a goal. He could hardly have imagined that one day he would become a Records Manager and adjudicator for Guinness World Records.
“One of my favourite adjudications was the Largest gathering of sport championships in Spain: all my heroes were there, and that’s a real treat for any sports lover.”
His studies, and his work, takes him around the globe quite regularly, and this seasoned 31-year-old traveller has lived in Europe, the UK and now the US – so it’s just as well he also has a passion for seeing the world. “My role as adjudicator has led me to authenticate record-breaking attempts all over the globe - from the Largest Cork Mosaic in Albania, to the Most ham sliced in one hour in Spain, to the Largest handprint painting in Qatar.
Being a native Spanish speaker (also fluent in English, Portugese and Italian), and based in New York City, it’s a natural fit for Carlos to specialize in adjudications in the Central and South American region.
“I love the opportunity of meeting people who are the best in what they do, and to get to know the history behind their skills, their lives, their abilities and so on. You get a completely new perspective about humans and their limits and every time it is a truly inspirational experience.
There is no feeling like announcing a new record has been set. To see the happiness in people’s eyes makes you feel like Santa Claus – and it’s right then when you realize you have the best job in the world.”
