    • Description:

One of the things that often gets overlooked with all the hard work and preparation involved in breaking Guinness World Records is that setting a world record should be fun.

Nowhere was that more evident than Mexico City on 21 August, when 2,433 residents and tourists, old and young, all tapped into their inner 8-year-old scientist to break the record for most Mentos and soda fountains at Six Flags Mexico.
      Most Mentos and soda fountains
In an event organized by local distributor Chupa Chups Industrial Mexicana, a slightly breezy, partly cloudy day set perfect conditions for an outdoor attempt at what was one of the most fun records I’ve ever seen participants attempt (I did notice a few teenage boys really enjoy an attempt a few months ago at the “largest bikini parade,” but they were only spectators).

Organizers and staff knew their target: 2,175 mint-and-cola-created eruptions. With that number in mind, an eventual total of 2,557 bottles of soda were placed across 231 tables, along with a pack of Mentos and an all-important poncho for eager participants.
      Most Mentos and soda fountains

A combination of unclaimed bottles and over-eager chemists who initiated their fountains before the given signal led to the final total of 2,433 – comfortably plenty for a new soda-tinged record.
      Most Mentos and soda fountains

If nothing else, the attempt at Mexico’s largest theme park affirmed my belief that this is one of the coolest records monitored by Guinness World Records. For a quick lesson, be sure to visit this web site, which explains the reasons behind these geysers. To put it simply: a lot of things go into causing this reaction, but diet cola and original Mentos seem to offer the best combination.

If science was always this fun, I might’ve paid more attention in high school chemistry. But then again, school experiments never offered a sight like this, snapped by yours truly on a platform 20 feet above the action – evidently not high enough to avoid a temporary cola eclipse! Most Mentos and soda fountains
      Most Mentos and soda fountains

For those curious, I luckily avoided a drenching. Also for those curious, this would make for a really fun activity with any spare cola you may have lying around the house (although be sure to head outside and I would first ask mom and dad’s permission if I was a youngster).

But gather enough friends, soda and Mentos and you might one day have this record yourself.

    • Description:

For a sports fan like myself there are few better places to attend a record attempt than at a world famous cricket venue, so when the opportunity to adjudicate the Largest Charity Walk at the iconic BIDvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa, came my way, I jumped at the chance.

      Largest charity walk 1

The occasion was the BIDvest Unity Walk, which was a combination of charity event and company fun day. The company in question, BIDvest, had arranged a big day out for their employees and their families at the BIDvest Wanderers Stadium (which, you may have guessed, is sponsored by the company), located in the leafy northern suburbs of Johannesburg. Food, drinks and entertainment were supplied for about 20,000 people, giving them the opportunity to get together and celebrate the company's achievements in a beautiful setting on what turned out to be a glorious spring day. The catch, or rather challenge, was that everyone was encouraged to take part in a 10 kilometre charity walk through the streets of Jo'burg beforehand, with all those completing the last 1.61 kilometres, or one mile, of the walk contributing to the Guinness World Record attempt for the Largest Charity Walk. It wasn't obligatory, but nevertheless, about 15,000 people arrived at the start line at 8 o'clock on the morning of Sunday 15 August to walk the South African streets, which is pretty impressive considering it was their day off and it would have been easier to stay in bed!Largest charity walk1

The existing record for this Category was 1,903 people, set by the Four Districts in Rathcoole Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin, Ireland, on 5 September 2009. As local celebrity DJ Smooth got the walk underway, it looked like the BIDvest walkers would smash the record easily, but it wasn't that straightforward - guidelines stipulated that only registered participants would qualify for the record, and many of these walkers weren't wearing registration numbers so I wondered if this would put the event in jeopardy.

The key to a successful Guinness World Record attempt is preparation. If you're trying for an individual record, that means practice, practice, practice. If you're going for a mass participation record, that means organisation, and fortunately this attempt was one of the best-organised events I've ever attended.

The streets were well cordoned off, marshalls and police posted along the route to ensure no-one went astray, refreshments and facilities positioned at regular intervals to keep everyone comfortable and happy, and the last "Guinness World Records Mile" clearly marked for all to see. It was a really big event involving thousands of people and nothing had been left to chance.

      IMG_4387 small.JPG

So my fears were allayed when event co-ordinator Danny Blumberg told me that not everyone was pre-registered – a lot of the walkers were friends and family members just joining in the fun – and was confident that there would be enough finishers to post an impressive new mark. So as I waited at the finish line in the stadium, along with the thousands who had opted out of the walk and to just enjoy the day in the sunshine, I put my faith in Danny's confidence and organisational abilities and anticipated a new record.

The first walker entered the stadium to great cheers just over an hour after the start. It was an impressive time, even though this wasn't a race, and he'd clearly adopted a speed-walking approach. He tore off a token from the race number on his shirt and gave it to one of the many staff waiting at the finish. This was the way the registered walkers would be counted – only those who handed in their tokens would be part of the final number. Soon after, walkers started coming in in ones, twos and threes, and then large groups entered the stadium together until there was a steady stream of jubilant walkers coming through the finishing gates. Along with a team of dedicated helpers, I counted the tokens as they came to us. As the numbers grew, so did the buzz around the ground.

      Largest charity walk 5

After two hours we had counted over 2,000 tokens and it was clear that the record belonged to BIDvest. It was just a question of how many registered walkers would finish. Half an hour later we'd counted 3,000, and not long after we were up to 4,000. The record was out of sight!

As the last walker came through the finish about three hours after the start, the count was up to 4,458 people – 2,555 more than the mark set in Ireland 11 months before – and SAR 81,000 (£7,106, $11,076) had been raised for the local Witwatersrand Hospice. The Guinness World Record for the largest charity walk had been smashed!

      IMG_4409small.JPG

By now the atmosphere in the stadium was electric; South African music legend Johnny Clegg was playing on stage and everyone was enjoying the day with a sense of great satisfaction at their combined achievement.

After Johnny performed his encore to a rapturous ovation, I went on stage to announce the record and the cheers rose again. It was official - the BIDvest employees were Guinness World Record holders for the Largest Charity Walk, and if there was a record for the best-organised event, I'd probably have given them that, too.

  • Largest boat tie-up Largest boat tie-up

    • From: gwr_mike
    • Description:

When temperatures soar high enough to melt your sunglasses and the lazy days of summer have slowed life to a crawl, the Lake Cumberland Association of Somerset, Kentucky, USA, has found the two perfect solutions: head to the water and break a world record.

The Guinness World Records achievement for the "largest boat tie-up" was originally set in 1998 and then broken five more times in the next six years. But the record had stood dormant since 2004 - at a daunting mark of 1,453 boats - until the LCA, spurred by president JD Hamilton, decided to have a go (for more information on the event, click here).

And with just 90 days of planning, the LCA smashed the previous record with its total of 1,651 boats successfully tied up in a single, continuous formation. This view from an overhead helicopter puts all the watercraft in pretty sweet perspective.

      Largest boat tie-up

What I can tell you from being there to adjudicate is that all of the participants were in the right place. With the heat index reaching 105° F (40.56° C), everybody found the welcoming waters of Lake Cumberland a fine refuge from the beating sun. While the record only called for all boats to be tied up together for at least one minute, boaters began latching onto each other around 10 a.m. in what turned into a daylong celebration into the evening hours.

The most amazing part of the event may have been the late rush in participants. According to organizers, fewer than 400 boats had signed up to take part in the attempt as late as two weeks before the event date. But a mad rush of more than 1,200 registrants (including several on the day of the event itself) resulted in boats of all shapes and sizes taking part in an historic afternoon.

      Largest boat tie-up

Eligible watercraft included any motorized boats, rigid inflatable boats, aquabikes/jetskis and canoes or kayaks. Such a democratic event resulted in kids as young as five and folks as old as they wouldn't divulge asking me whether or not the record had been broken.

After an overhead helicopter ride and a personal pontoon tour around the entire formation to count each boat, I could confidently say yes, as the people of south central Kentucky can hold onto their place in record-breaking history.

      Largest boat tie-up

And with summer days sure to heat up again next year and the thrill of a broken record fresh in their memories, it may be much sooner than six more years before we see the LCA try and take this record down again.

  • Heaviest sumo deadlift in one Heaviest sumo deadlift in one hour

    • From: gwr_amanda
    • Description:

At first glance, the words sulfur, deadlifts, and Guinness World Records would seem to have nothing in common with one another.  On Saturday, August 14, however, Dr. Thienna Ho combined all three in an impressive record-setting event.

At St. Emydius Gym in San Francisco, California, Thienna attempted to set the record for the heaviest sumo deadlift in one hour.  The attempt was to promote her new book, Cooking on the Light Side, which extols the benefits of a sulfur-rich diet.

Heaviest weight sumo deadlifted in one hour 001.jpg
Thienna's book, "Cooking on the Light Side"

The minimum amount required to set a new record was 20,000 kg (44,092 lb).  Thienna did not just want to set a new record, though - she also wanted to lift more than the most weight deadlifted in an hour, which is a hefty 40,850 kg (90,058 lb), and record only ever held by men.  It was an amazing goal for a woman who weighs in at only 97 pounds.

The first thing I did upon arrival was to check the weight of the barbell, which was 20.7 kg (45 lbs 13 oz), or approximately half of Thienna's body weight.  After a few practice squats, Thienna began her official attempt.  Surrounded by her friends and family, her trainer and I counted every complete deadlift.  In order to be counted towards the total, Thienna had to achieve a full 90-degree squat, touch the barbell to the floor, and straighten her legs completely.  After sixty minutes, Thienna had completed an astonishing 2,289 repetitions - lifting a total of 47,552.9 kg (104,836 lb 3 oz) - a new Guinness World Records achievement!

Heaviest weight sumo deadlifted in one hour 004.jpg
      Thienna demonstrating her squat technique

Thienna's record was especially gratifying, as this was her fourth Guinness World Records accomplishment.  In addition to her new record, Thienna also holds the titles for the most sumo squats in an hour (5,135), the longest Samson's chair (static wall sit) (11 hr, 51 min, and 14 sec), and the heaviest deadlift in one minute (1,752.68 kg; 3,864 lbs).

After the attempt, Thienna signed copies of her new cookbook and discussed the benefits of eating foods rich in sulfur, which she says improves strength, stamina, skin tone, and overall health.  Thienna certainly is living proof of her theory - she was in excellent shape, and was in great health and spirits following the record attempt.

      GWRDeadlift3.jpg
Thienna with the barbell she used for the record attempt - approximately half of her body weight

With her new record, Thienna showed the power of hard work and determination, and proved that one can achieve incredible feats if the will is strong enough - which is what Guinness World Records is all about.  On behalf of Guinness World Records, congratulations Thienna!

    • Description:

The completed Saemangeum seawall, dubbed the "Great Wall on the Sea," and the world’s longest sea dike was awarded the Guinness World Records Certificate on August 2 2010 after 19 years of construction. The certificate presentation ceremony was held at the Sinsi Plaza of Saemangeum Sea Dike in North Jeolla Province.

Minister of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Chang Tae-pyong, commented that "Based on our ability to construct the world’s longest Saemangeum sea dike, we will collect all forces to create new legends that will astound the world. Let us work together for the Saemangeum region to become an economic hub of Northeast Asia and a stronghold of low-carbon and green growth that integrates industries, leisure, environment and cutting-edge agriculture."

      longest dike3.jpg

Today, the Saemangeum seawall measures 33.9 kilometers (21.06 miles) in length. It links Gunsan and Buan along the southwestern coast of North Jeolla Province, and is a prime area for developing various government projects such as those for agriculture, tourism, science and technology research, and renewable energy industries.

      gb.jpg

Saemangeum’s construction was one of Korea’s largest engineering projects, which cost a total of KRW 290 million as well as involving approximately 2.37 million workers and 910,000 construction facilities including dumps and dredgers. Builders adopted the stone net method, an unconventional building method, which entailed wrapping large rocks in nets.

Christy Chin, Guinness World Records’ representative in Asia, presented the official certificate to the President of the Korea Rural Community Cooperation, Mr. Hong Moon-Pyo. "I am very impressed to see the greatest and most magnificent construction in this country. The purpose of the Saemangeum embankment was not only to secure enough arable land to ensure food security for the future, but also their government is also planning to develop Saemanguem into a U-agricultural city, combining farming and urban areas, taking into consideration the environment and ecosystem" said Christy Chin.

      Certificate Presentation 1.jpg

"The Saemangeum Sea Dike is the world’s first construction in the deep sea of the highest level of difficulty successfully completed with Korean technology. The Guinness Records award is an opportunity to confirm that Korea has world-class technology when it comes to the construction of sea dikes." said Mr. Hong Moon-Pyo.

    • From: gwr_kim
    • Description:

It was a sizzling hot day in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the perfect day for a glass of ice-cold sweet iced tea, and local Chick-fil-A restaurant owner Arthur Greeno and his crew were happy to oblige.

Having set a record back in August 2008 with the largest glass of soft drink, Arthur and the Chick-fil-A team knew they had the means to up the ante this year with sweet iced tea, one of the restaurant’s best selling beverages. The cup constructed for the attempt towered 2.7 m (9 ft) tall, but this wasn’t the only oversized item the team had to worry about producing for the attempt. There was also a giant tea bag containing 32.6 kg (72 lb) of Chick-fil-A tea that had to be maneuvered into and out of the cup. Extracting the bag after brewing was complete proved to be the day’s greatest challenge. With the added weight of the boiling water added on top of the bag, it proved significantly heavier than it had on its own, eventually requiring the help of a truck, a fire engine, and even a forklift before the makeshift pulley system successfully lifted the bag out of the cup.

      Largest iced tea

Once this feat had been accomplished, it was time to add the 521 kg (1,150 lb) of sugar and finish filling the cup with more water to dilute the very strong tea that had been brewed with the boiling water and tea bag. Finally, after a preparation process of approximately 3 hours, it was time to get the official measurement of the tea’s volume. Professional surveyors determined that the goal volume of 912 litres (200 gal, 240 US gal) would be reached once the liquid was 69 cm (2 ft 3 in) from the top of the cup. I scaled a ladder to the top to verify the tea had reached this level and announced to the crowd the official measurement of 912 litres.

      Largest iced tea

The next challenge was to bring the temperature in the cup down to a chilly 7.2˚C (45˚F) in order for the tea to truly qualify as “iced.” The whole team, including Chick-fil-A employees, members of the public, and even a few cows joined together to form an assembly line of sorts, passing the giant ice cubes from a refrigerated truck all the way into the cup. Once it had been filled to the brim, I climbed once again to the top to take the temperature reading. And even though the temperature outside was positively blistering, the tea itself clocked in at a refreshing 0.56˚C (33˚F), making the record official! Hardly surprising that the crowd eagerly lined up to taste it for themselves.

      Largest iced tea

For a condensed view of how it all went down, check out Chick-fil-A’s time lapse video of the attempt below.

  • Most combine harvesters workin Most combine harvesters working simultaneously on a single field

    • From: gwr_amanda
    • Description:

On Saturday, August 7, farmers, friends and family arrived on a wheat field in the rural municipality of Stanley near Winkler, Manitoba, Canada to attempt the world record for the most combine harvesters working simultaneously on a single field.

Before getting into the record details, I should probably explain what a combine harvester is, for those who are unfamiliar with the term.  A combine harvester is a piece of farming machinery that harvests grain crops, combining reaping, binding and threshing into one step as opposed to three distinct processes.

I myself had never seen a combine up close and personal before, so I was excited to check one out firsthand!

Most combine harvesters working in a single field - Winkler Mani 069.jpg

Combines up close - they are massive!

The combines began assembling in their assigned slots the evening before the record attempt at World Harvest for Kids, a fundraiser for Children's Camps International.  Children's Camps International is a great organization that helps churches develop ministries of their own in developing countries, by reaching out to children and families in these areas.  In order to support this great cause, many farmers sacrificed precious time on their own fields and came down to partake in the world record attempt.

Most combine harvesters working in a single field - Winkler Mani 008.jpg

      Harvest for Kids banner

The two main criteria that I was looking for during the attempt were a) at least 176 combines participating, as the standing record was 175, and b) the combines harvested simultaneously for at least five minutes.  The first requirement was met fairly easily, as 204 combines arrived for one of 200 pre-assigned swaths.  After confirming that all slots were full, I ascended 75 feet into the air on a fire truck ladder in order to have a full view of the attempt.  The official starting signal sounded, and the combines were off!

Most combine harvesters working in a single field - Winkler Mani 020.jpg

      Ready, set, combine!

The sight of two hundred combines working simultaneously is not easily described.  The combines were positioned on either side of a central viewing area (one hundred on each side), and worked their way from the outer edge of the field towards the middle.  The approaching machines looked like some kind of invading combine army, albeit a very slow-moving army as the vehicles' top speeds for the attempt were only 1.5 miles per hour.

Most combine harvesters working in a single field - Winkler Mani 036.jpg

Combines en route to setting a new world record

With my high vantage point, I was able to confirm that all of the combines harvested for the required five minutes.  I waved to the organizers on stage to let them know that everything looked good, and after coming down from the fire truck ladder I was happy to officially present the Guinness World Records certificate.

Near record-setting temperatures aside, 3907.7 kg (8615 lb) of donated school supplies – so much that a full-sized school bus could hardly contain all items – proved the record-earning mark for Avery Dennison, as the organization achieved a Guinness World Records™ distinction for Largest donation of school supplies in 24 hours.

On Monday, August 2, ballerinas of all ages arrived in Central Park in New York City to attempt to break the record for most ballet dancers on pointe.  The attempt was organized by professional ballet photographer Gene Schiavone and his wife Ellen, who is currently the head of American Ballet Theatre's Costume Fund.

Gene and Ellen wanted to stage the event in order to bring attention to dance and ballet, and to raise awareness for the Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow (AB Stars) campaign, which promotes dance as a fun and healthy activity to children around the world.  Donations were accepted on-site for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club performing arts program, which is a partner of the AB Stars campaign.

Spirits were high as dancers started registering for the attempt at 4:00pm.  Angelina Ballerina herself was on hand to greet the dancers, and future ballet stars from the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club performed for the enthusiastic crowd.

Also participating in the festivities were American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Michele Wiles and ABT soloist Craig Salstein.  Both dancers helped to lead the attempt, with Craig on stage acting as the emcee and demonstrating the dance combination, and Michele leading the attempt in the front of the formation.

The number to beat for the record was 220 dancers, which was set in New York City in April 2009.  The dancers were determined to break the previous record – several participants offered to lend an extra pair of pointe shoes to dancers who didn’t have shoes with them.  In the end, 241 dancers registered for the attempt.

There was still work to be done, however, as the guidelines stated that all registered dancers must stay on pointe for one minute in order to be counted.  Dancers assembled in ten perfectly positioned rows, and learned the combination.  At the official signal, dancers rose onto their toes, and 230 participants made it through the combination entirely on pointe – a new Guinness World Records achievement!

It was National Hot Dog Day in the USA, and famed New York City eatery Serendipity 3 knew just the way to celebrate: they unveiled their newest creation, the Serendipity 3 Foot Long Haute Dog. With each dog costing $69 (£44.62), the extravagant snack was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s most expensive hot dog available on a menu.

As you may have guessed, this is no ordinary ballpark frank. The foot-long premium sausage is grilled in white truffle oil, nestled in a salted pretzel bun brushed with truffle butter, and topped off with medallions of duck foie gras. And don’t forget the condiments: heirloom tomato ketchup, truffle Dijon mustard, and caramelized Vidalia onions. Hungry yet?

After the hot dog was unveiled by Serendipity 3 founder Stephen Bruce, Guinness World Records guidelines required that the hot dog be purchased by a customer, in order to confirm its status as a commercially available item. Trudy Tant, a visitor to New York from Rock Hill, South Carolina, had stopped by the restaurant earlier that morning just to have a peek at the place, but left as a part of Guinness World Records history as the very first purchaser of the most expensive hot dog! After having a bite of the enormous dog, she was certainly satisfied with her purchase.

Once the hot dog had been purchased and tasted, it was time to officially recognize Serendipity 3 for its record-breaking menu item. Stephen Bruce was thrilled to accept the third world record on behalf of his restaurant, which has previously set records for the most expensive dessert (the $25,000 golden opulence sundae) and the largest cup of hot chocolate.

$69 may be a tough price to swallow for a hot dog, but for a truly indulgent summer afternoon, the Haute Dog might just be the ideal snack!

Most martial arts throws in one minute

On 26th June 2010 I was in Alexandroupolis, in Greece ready to adjudicate the Guinness World Records attempt for the most martial arts throws in one minute. I was informed that the record attempt was in conjunction with the International self- defence championships that were taking place in a neighbouring arena, so there was a growing amount of anticipation for both events. Alexandroupolis was chosen as the destination as it is a relatively unknown town and I got the feeling that the people from this northern part of Greece are proud to not only highlight the natural beauty of Alexandroupolis, but also the fact that they are keen to bring something completely unknown, like martial arts into this area to inform and educate people of all ages.

      3.JPG

The record attempt was organised by the Greek Koryu Bugei Association and the Technical Chief Director, Mr Kostas Karipidis. The day upon arrival into Alexandroupolis I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Karipidis and his team of participants as they were practising for their attempt at the indoor stadium in Alexandroupolis. I could tell that a great amount of care, dedication and commitment had been given in order to organise and bring the town and members of the Martial arts school together.

The following day, after much press interest and interviews had been given I made my way over the indoor stadium in Alexandroupolis, ready to take my seat for the amazing performance that lay ahead.

      6.JPG

Mr. Karipidis, a member of the member of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai association, took to the floor and addressed the crowd with a great display of martial arts, followed by his pupils. It was great to see such enthusiasm from all ages of children and teenagers. The finale of the evening came from Mr. Karipidis himself, who gave a powerful and extreme performance. The astonishing factor came moments after this, when Mr Karipidis then prepared himself, alongside 3 of his best students, to carry out the Guinness World Records attempt of the most martial arts throws in one minute.

      9.JPG

During the attempt, the crowd rose to their feet and burst into an applause as they too had noticed Mr. Karipidis had surpassed the previous record. This was not yet an official result, as I then proceeded to review the video footage and check my count. After doing so, I returned to a very anxious and loud audience, ready to deliver my verdict.

      12.JPG

      16.JPG

Mr Karipidis had indeed managed to get a Guinness World Records title for the most Martial Arts throws in one minute, achieving a brilliant 51 throws in one minute.

      Congratulations to all the participants!

It was a warm sunny day in The Hague; the venue was one of The Netherlands top beach resorts, Scheveningen beach, and Neckermann.nl, a travel agency in The Netherlands, were planning to attempt to set a new Guinness World Records achievement for the most people applying sunscreen.

      IMG_4333.JPG
Having arrived the night before, early on the morning of 21 July I walked the short distance from my hotel to Lekker, a beachside restaurant, where the event was to be held. Staff dressed in yellow, the company’s colour, busily made preparations for the Guinness World Records attempt. An area had been cordoned off on the beach in front of the restaurant, and grids of yellow towels had been laid out within the area on which participants would be invited to position themselves.

      IMG_4322.JPG
      IMG_4317.JPG
It wasn’t long before members of the public began flowing in, and each person was given a number as they entered the venue. The participants ranged in age from 5 to 80 years old, and everyone was in good spirits as they prepared for the attempt. Guinness World Records had set the minimum number of participants at 250, as this was the first time this challenge had been attempted. All participants would have to continuously apply sunscreen to themselves for a minimum of 2 minutes, as laid out in the guidelines provided by Guinness World Records, and stewards were on hand to make sure that everyone fully participated. Anyone not fully participating for the whole 2 minutes would be disqualified from the attempt.

      IMG_4324.JPG
      IMG_4329.JPG
      IMG_4338.JPG
When the organisers were confident that they had enough participants, they ushered everyone into the attempt area, where they lined up on the towels in grid formation. Without further ado I gave a loud signal, and the 2 minutes began. All participants rubbed sunscreen into themselves, many much more vigorously than was required by the official guidelines!

      IMG_4343.JPG

At the end of the 2 minutes I sounded the horn and went to meet with the stewards. As I suspected from my observation, everyone had made a real effort to participate for the full 2 minutes. Returning to the attempt area I addressed the awaiting crowd. A total of 251 people had applied sunscreen to themselves for a full 2 minutes, and as the crowd cheered, I presented an official Guinness World Records certificate to the CEO of Neckermann to mark the occasion.

The World Cup 2010 drew the attention worldwide and near the end of it, a new Guinness World Records™  record was set in Yanji City, China, for the most people keeping a football in the air. 1,062 participants tapped the football simultaneously for 11 seconds, breaking the previous record of 792.

The event was organized by New Culture View, Yanji Municipality Committee of the Communist Party of China and Yanji Municipality Government, and sponsored by Coca-Cola (Jilin) Beverages Ltd. The participants were students from Yanbian University and other colleges in Yanji City, and some football fans also took part . Before the event, the organizer had been training the participants for more than one month. And at the event, they did a great job, doing everything according to the guidelines.

The people of Castleblayney could not have been more inviting and welcoming. The Community Enterprise company who design and run the Muckno Festival were incredibly well organised and really friendly.

The day started with visits around the town to firstly meet the ladies at the local insurance company who were wearing their outfits all day (they wanted a photo with the lady from GWR whether they got the record or not.) Next we stopped off at the supermarket where we passed the Bedrock Car displayed in the foyer area and I was shown the paintings of all the characters from the Flintstones that had been put up around the shopping centre so that everyone knew what to wear. The festival had already started in the town square with a children’s fancy dress competition (they were in different outfits to the ones they wore later for the record) I was taken up onto the stage to be introduced to everyone there. I actually think I was introduced to most of the people in the town leading up to the attempt itself!

      PF2_1885.jpg

Come 6.30pm in the evening, during the magic show, everyone started to gather in the town centre and we started to get an idea of just how many people had decided to get involved. There were some outfits you could just buy but apparently these sold out quite quickly and the majority of those taking part made all of their costumes themselves. Whole families came decked out as Fred’s or Wilma’s, Barneys and Bettys and many of the younger children were Pebbles and Bam, Bams. One family had even made a complete outfit for the family dog as Deano the dinosaur with only his nose and ears visible. He really did look the part! At 8.00pm the procession started led by the Bedrock Car and everyone eventually came through the counting point one by one. The High street was cordoned off for the final gathering and I was please to announce that they had been successful at about 8.45pm. The certificate was presented to Tommy McGuire who was the Chairman of the organising committee but all of the committee were on the stage at presentation time. They were understandably very pleased! However the celebrations didn’t stop there and they went on to a Chinese lantern parade followed by fire performers, a band and then a firework display. Many went on to carry on the celebrations but that was the end of quite a long day for me!

This was just day one of the festival for the organisers, many of the team were up early the next day participating in the Triathlon followed by the Stars in their Eyes evening event and then on to the Sunday events as well!
