Some say life slows down in the dog days of summer and the lazy days of August sure fit the bill. But records never rest, and while many of us were trying our best to stay in the shade or enjoy something on ice near the pool, plenty of people were still testing their limits this month. Let’s take a look at August in sports records!
Return to the pitch
It always feels like top-level football never stops in a World Cup year, but the month-or-so lull between Spain’s celebration in South Africa and the commencement of top-flight campaigns across Europe sure left a void in the footballing world.
But now everywhere from Serie A to the Portuguese Liga has kicked off its 2010/11 campaigns and already record-breaking achievements are pouring in. This has been specifically evident in the Premier League, and not just from the players on the pitch.
Already a new record has been broken for the “youngest Premier League referee.” Best of luck to Michael Oliver (UK, pictured), who at 25 years and 182 days old made his debut in Birmingham’s 2-1 victory over Blackburn on 21 August. As you can tell by this article, it appears we may not have heard the last of Oliver.
Also of note in England, Chelsea have contributed a torrid start to the season with a 14-0 goals advantage on three wins in three matches. The Blues have now scored 32 unanswered goals dating back to last season, a Premier League record.
In the U.S., baseball continues its regular season and Alex Rodriguez (USA, right) added a historic touch to August. The New York Yankees third baseman became the youngest player to hit 600 home runs when he knocked a two-run blast against the Toronto Blue Jays on 4 August. “A-Rod” went yard at the age of 35 years, 8 days, besting Babe Ruth’s previous mark by 1 year, 188 days.
Speaking of home runs, Jim Thome (USA) joined an exclusive list in hitting his 12th career walk-off home run on 17 August. He joined Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson and Babe Ruth for the career lead in the category. For those unfamiliar, a walk-off home run is one which immediately ends the game in favour of the team at bat, allowing them to "walk off" the field winners.
Basketball in the summer?
The answer is yes, as the FIBA World Championships press on in Turkey. Check back after the tournament ends next month to see if any noteworthy records were set or broken. In the meantime, congratulations to Tina Thompson (USA) of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks for becoming the all-time leading scorer in the American women’s basketball league. She has amassed 6,413 points in her 14-year career, 150 points clear of second-place’s Lisa Leslie.
What you did this month
As always, the professionals weren’t the only ones getting in on the action this month. Here’s a sampling of what you all accomplished in August:
Fastest time to 100 Eskimo rolls by hand in a canoe - female: Helen Barnes (UK, pictured) completed 100 eskimo rolls in 3 min 46.097 sec at the David Lloyd Club in Nottingham, UK on 24 June 2010.
Longest marathon playing indoor football (soccer): The longest marathon playing indoor football (soccer) is 30 hr 10 min by members of Healthy Hearts Alberta (Canada) at the Leduc Recreation Centre in Leduc, Alberta, Canada, from 20-21 May 2010.
Most basketball free throws in 10 minutes; Most basketball free throws in 30 seconds: The most basketball free throws made in 10 minutes is 366 by Bob J. Fisher (USA) at Vermillion High School in Vermillion, Kansas, USA, on 5 June 2010. The same day, Fisher set the 30-second record with 33 free throws.
Largest game of basketball knockout: The largest game of basketball knockout consisted of 146 players at Pine Creek High School (USA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, on 13 May 2010.
Sadly, summer is slowly winding down, but enjoy a great kick-off to the fall and we'll see you come October!

ALABAMA BUTTERBEAN FESTIVAL CONSTRUCTS GIANT POT IN BIRMINGHAM FOR GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS ATTEMPT
THE ALABAMA BUTTERBEAN FESTIVAL LAYS PLANS TO BUILDS ITS WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS FOR THE WORLD’S LARGEST POT OF BAKED BEANS
Pinson, AL (August 27, 2010) – An enormous metal pot was constructed by the Alabama Butterbean Festival in an effort to earn the festival a place in the Guinness World Records books. The pot will provide the basis for the planned Guinness World Records attempt for the Largest Pot of Baked Beans during the 2010 Alabama Butterbean Festival on Saturday, September 4th in Pinson, AL.
Planning for the monster pot started in October 2007, and will measure over 7 feet wide and 4 feet tall when complete. The vast metal pot is being constructed by Bradford & Hines Custom Metal Fabrication using stainless steel plates provided by Phoenix Metal, both of which are based in Birmingham, AL.
The pot, which will alone weigh around 1,000 pounds, will have the capacity to hold 1,200 gallons, a key factor to making the record-breaking dreams of the Alabama Butterbean Festival a reality as the current record stands at 832 gallons. In addition to the size, the pot structure must be watertight and suitable for cooking the beans.
“We are incredibly proud of how the local community and businesses have come together to help make this Guinness World Records achievement a reality. We hope to show that by working together every community can achieve its goals no matter how small, or in our case how big, they are,” commented Phil Sims, Chairman for the Alabama Butterbean Festival, on the progress of the pot.
Once finished, the Alabama Butterbean Festival’s next focus will be to gather supplies needed to cook the baked beans that will fill the pot for the Guinness World Records attempt. The Festival will be working with farmers from the California Large Lima Bean Growers Advisory Board to source the beans which will be the recipe’s most vital ingredient. Other local companies, including Food Giant, Evans Meat and RL Schreiber, will provide the additional ingredients needed.
More information on the festival can be found at www.albutterbeanfestival.com, the official website of the 2010 Alabama Butterbean Festival.

Roosevelt’s New Deal after the 1930’s Depression.
The proceeds from the Alabama Butterbean Festival go toward the restoration of the Palmerdale Homesteads Community Center and the Pinson Education Foundation. The board of directors for the Community Center hopes to renovate the whole building in celebration of the community’s 75th Anniversary this year and to better provide youth and senior activities. It also provides scholarship to students and teachers through the Pinson Education Foundation.

Lake Cumberland Association Awarded the Guinness World Records Achievement for the Largest Boat Tie-up
Lake Cumberland, KY (August 15) – On Saturday, August 14th, thousands of boats gathered for a lake-wide event hosted by the Lake Cumberland Association (LCA) and broke a Guinness World Record for the Largest Boat Tie-up, making boating history. A total of 1,651 boats participated in the record breaking achievement that beat the previous record of 1,453 that was set on Lake Norman in North Carolina in 2004.
The Lake Cumberland Raft Up 2010 aimed to showcase the 1,255 miles of pristine shoreline to travelers and boat enthusiast from across the region. Each of the Lake Cumberland’s nine marinas offered a full schedule of family friendly festivities to visitors through out the record breaking weekend. The record breaking attempt ‘Raft Up’ was the headlining event of the weekend, which boats of all sizes were eligible to participate in, including row boats and canoes.
“We are extremely proud of what we were able to accomplish today and want to extend a big thanks to all the record participants and visitors that came out for the raft up event. The Lake Cumberland Association's main goal was to bring together family and friends for a fantastic, record-breaking day on a beautiful lake. Everyone had a great time and will be able to look back and remember the day they broke a Guinness World Record. The Lake Cumberland Association is going to organize many more fun events and we plan to break this record again next year," explains JD Hamilton, President of the LCA.
Guidelines for the record category stipulate that all participating boats must be connected together in a single line for at least one minute and have at least one person on board during that minute. The feat was witnessed by an official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, who verified that the strict guidelines of the record category were followed. After determining the record was successfully broken LCA was presented with an official Guinness World Records certificate recognizing the feat.

Avery Dennison's Give Back to Schools Initiative Sets New Guinness World Records Achievement
Over $125,000 in School Supplies Donated to New York City School
Aug 04, 2010 (Pasadena, CA) – Today in New York City, Avery Dennison set the Guinness World Records achievement for Largest Donation of School Supplies in 24 hours. Avery Dennison donated more than 8,500 pounds of school supplies to an in-need New York City school, shattering the record requirement of 1,102 lbs, 5 oz.
To establish the record, students from Adolph S Ochs School and Academy lined up at about 9 a.m. this morning to stuff a full-size school bus with the donated school supplies as part of the celebration. The feat was witnessed by an official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, who verified that the attempt adhered to the strict guidelines of the record category and presented Avery Dennison with a certificate documenting the new world record.
"I am so proud of what we accomplished here today: setting a new record that enables us not only to support a very deserving school, but also to help draw attention to the needs of schools throughout the country," said Tim Bond, Group Vice President, Avery Dennison Office Products North America. "Avery Dennison is committed to helping parents and teachers across America provide students with the highest-quality education possible, and the school supplies are vital to that success."
Guidelines for the record category stipulate that three elements must be present in all Guinness World Records proposals: an idea that is measurable, breakable and verifiable.
"We are very excited about Avery Dennison Guinness World Records attempt for Largest Amount of School Supplies Donated in 24 Hours. This is an entirely new record category that was inspired by Avery Dennison's unique proposal," said Danny Girton, Corporate Adjudications Manager, Guinness World Records. "This record attempt is a story with a heart, which is what Guinness World Records is all about: ordinary people striving to achieve extraordinary things."
The record-setting event is a part of the Avery Dennison Give Back to Schools program that was created in celebration of the company's 75th anniversary as a way to give back to the communities that have made the company's success possible. The program will provide 10 very deserving U.S. schools with Avery(R) premium school supplies. To enter to win, students, families and supporters (ages 18 and older) can vote for their local K-8 school now at www.averydennisongivebacktoschools.com. At the conclusion of the contest on September 5, the 10 schools with the highest number of votes will each win Avery-brand school supplies valued at approximately $10,000.

When the summer months heat up, so do the sports records.
No month yet this year could compare to the number of records broken – both by professional athletes and everyday warriors – in July, so let’s not waste any time getting to the goods.
WRAPPING UP THE WORLD CUP
We entered July on the highs of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which culminated on the 11th with Spain winning its first ever world title. A pair of records were set in the historic 1-0 victory over the Netherlands: the match saw the most cautions issued in a FIFA World Cup final, as 14 yellow cards were handed out (nine to Dutch players, five to Spaniards when the previous record for such a match was six). And when Andres Iniesta sent fans like the ones pictured below into a euphoric frenzy, he had done so with the latest game-winning goal in cup history, netting in the 116th minute.
LOW SCORES ON TWO CONTINENTS
While the eyes of the world were on La Furia Roja, golf secretly had a fantastic record-breaking month.
Let’s start with Paul Goydos. The American shot a 59 at the John Deere Classic on the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, USA on 8 July 2010 to equal the lowest-ever score in a PGA Tournament single round. He became the fourth player to ever do it and the first since 1999. What a surprise then, when the mark was equalled less than a month later (albeit in August): Stuart Appleby (Australia) nailed a 59 on 1 August to win the Greenbrier Classic on the Old White course in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Not to be outdone across the pond, Irish phenom Rory McIlroy stroked a blistering 63 in the opening round of the Open Championships on 15 July. That tied the record for lowest score in a single round at any golf major championships. The magic number of 63 has now been achieved by 22 golfers a total of 24 times at a major.
CAN ANYBODY SPARE A SEAT?
The tennis world had a big June, what with all the mania over “Isner-Mahut,” but it served up a solid record in July as well. Serena Williams (USA)and Kim Clijsters (Belgium) broke the record for the highest attendance at a tennis match, when they played in front of 35,681 at King Baudoiun Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, on 8 July. This topped the previous record of 30,472 who saw Billie Jean King defeat Bobby Riggs in 1973's famous "Battle of the Sexes" in Houston, Texas, USA.
MURALITHARAN THE MAGNIFIENT
A true legend reached a legendary milestone this month in the cricket world. Muttiah Muralitharan – the Sri Lankan bowler who made his first test appearance in 1992 – reached 800 wickets in his final-ever test, doing so against India on 20 July. Not only is his 800 the most wickets ever taken in a test career, he is also the only bowler to ever reach the mark, with the nearest competitor at 708.
WHAT YOU DID THIS MONTH
Not to be outdone by the pros, you achieved a slew of approved records this month. Here’s a selection:
-The most consecutive football rolls across the forehead is 581 by Victor Rubilar (Argentina, pictured) at Cicerellos Fish 'n' Chips in Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia, on 1 April 2010.
-The longest marathon playing kickball is 50 hr 00 min by the Mercy Project (USA) at Community Park in Rowlett, Texas, USA, from 9-11 April 2010.
-The most basketball half-court shots made in one minute is 7 by Charlie Vernon (USA, pictured) in Pullman, Washington, USA, on 15 April 2010.
-The greatest weight deadlifted in one hour is 40,850 kg (90,058 lb) by Stuart Barr (UK) in Solihull, West Midlands, UK, on 19 April 2010.
-The most marathons run on consecutive days by a female is 11 by Kalyn Jolivette (USA) in Pickerington, Ohio, USA, from 9 to 19 June 2010.
-The most consecutive volleyball passes is 110 in an event hosted by the Triangle Volleyball Club at the Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, on 5 February 2010.
No doubt another great month in the books. See everyone at the end of August!

THQ AND MAJOR LEAGUE EATING DEVOUR COMIC CON AND SET NEW WORLD RECORD WITH A MOUND OF MARS BARS
EATING CHAMPIONS JOEY CHESTNUT AND PAT BERTOLETTI SET NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® ACHIEVEMENT IN CELEBRATION OF THQ’S RED FACTION: ARMAGEDDON
Agoura Hills, CA (July 23, 2010) – On Thursday July 22, 2010, Major League Eaters Joey Chestnut and Pat Bertoletti tied and set new Guinness World Records (GWR) Achievements for Most Chocolate Bars Eaten in One Minute after each devouring three Mars Bars during a competition celebrating Comic Con and THQ’s upcoming release of Red Faction: Armageddon, set on the red planet. The record-breaking event took place at the Tin Fish Restaurant directly across from Comic Con, and was overseen by Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday, who acted as the record officiator.
A total of three Major League Eating (MLE) competitors joined to compete for the Guinness World Records title that resulted in the split victory. Directly following the one minute Guinness World Records record attempt portion of the event, the three competitors reconvened and went head-to-head to see who could eat the most Mars Bars in a five minute competition sanctioned by MLE, the governing body of stomach-centric sport. After eating a total of 38 Mars Bars, Pat Bertoletti was declared the winner of this extended five minute MLE challenge.
For the Guinness World Records portion of the event, the record guidelines of this category stipulated that each Mars Bar must weigh at least 49 grams and must remain wrapped until the start of the one minute timeframe. Drinking of any liquid was not allowed during the record attempt and the competitor’s mouth had to be completely empty after each bar was consumed. After each attempt, Glenday verified that the eaters adhered to the strict guidelines of the record category, and Chestnut and Bertoletti were declared the winners. Both consumption champions were presented with an official Guinness World Records certificate recognizing their achievement in eating.
In addition to this record-breaking event, THQ will be hosting an array of game demos and developer interviews for Red Faction: Armageddon during Comic Con at its official booth, #5145, located in hall H.

About Major League Eater Joey Chestnut
Joey rose to lofty heights in record time, from winning Rookie of the Year for 2005 to defeating the great Kobayashi in the 2007 and 2008 Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contests and the 2008 Krystal Square Off V World Hamburger Eating Championship.
His career consists of the 2005-2008 seasons, in which he won the asparagus title four times, set an astonishing new world record of 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, five times beat Kobayashi, four times won the Chinook Winds rib-eating championship, dominated nearly every chicken wing competition he attempted, and most recently did the unthinkable by eating 103 Krystal hamburgers in only 8 minutes. Joey Chestnut is truly an American hero and a national treasure.
Guinness World Records is excited to see that our friends at First News (the UK's national children's newspaper) are launching their own show; First TV. We've had a sneak peek at what they've got in store and we have to say that it looks great. There might even be a few record attempts happening too!
Here's the official low down on the new show:
First TV is set to go live on 16th July after being announced last month by Piers Morgan, a co-founder of First News – the award-winning, and only, national children’s newspaper. The Britain’s Got Talent judge announced that the new magazine-style show for young people will be digitally streamed over the internet. Teenagers are connected to a mobile phone or computer for a staggering seven and a half hours a day. The first show will go online this month followed by a series of specials throughout the summer on 6th August, 20th August and 3rd September.
A fantastic line up of presenters include Charlie McDonnell (YouTube’s biggest blogger in the whole of the UK with 60 million views!), Emma Pollard (who played Lauren in the internet drama KateModern with 2.5m views per week) and roving reporters Nicola and Fran Gleadall – the singing and dancing twins on Your Country Needs You! and The X-Factor.
First TV will be a mixture of news, entertainment, sport, travel, high-profile celebrity interviews, competitions and record breaking attempts – one in each episode. To find out exactly what records were broken involving socks, alphabets and balloons and what happened when First TV’s twins came face to face with Jedward - viewers will have to tune in from mid-July.
Nicky Cox, editor of First News and First TV, said: “First TV is ground-breaking. For too long, older children and teenagers have been poorly served by traditional television channels. We felt it was time to make their own channel just for them! First News is already read by a quarter of the nation’s young people so First TV was the next logical step for us on a digital platform.”

Wow! That’s all I can say about June, which gave us so many sports records, I don’t know where to start.
World Cup? Wimbledon? NBA? All the records you broke?
To be honest, we can begin anywhere and not go wrong, but let’s kick off with the dominant story around the globe this month: FIFA’s World Cup in South Africa.
Fabulous Football
First, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point you in the direction of our very own World Cup minisite, available by clicking here. There’s plenty to see, as you can follow Thulani Ngcobo’s attempt at attending the most World Cup matches in a single competition, GWR’s own Jason Curran as his adjudicator, catch up on our blog series and vote in the Guinness World Records Cup – currently in the knockout stages.
Now, as for some actual records broken at the 2010 World Cup, here’s a sampling:
First brothers to play against each other in a FIFA World Cup: When Germany and Ghana clashed in their group play finale, Kevin-Prince Boateng (Ghana) and Jerome Boateng (Germany, right) put family bonds aside for country. Click here for a more in-depth look.
Oldest player to make his FIFA World Cup debut: David James (UK) earned this distinction at the starting keeper for England in its second match of the tournament, a clean sheet draw against Algeria.
Most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal: Switzerland saw its record of flawless World Cup defense dating back to 1994 end at 559 minutes when it conceded a 75th-minute score to Chile in a 1-0 loss on 21 June.
Terrific Tennis
The only story that seemed to take any thunder away from the World Cup at all this month was tennis. In particular, the Longest professional tennis match ever played. John Isner (USA) and Nicolas Mahut (France) lit the sporting world on fire with their first-round epic at Wimbledon toward the end of the month. We had it all covered, so check it out here.
Also in tennis this month, we saw Roger Federer’s record for Most consecutive Men’s Grand Slam semifinals end when he bowed out before the final four at the French Open. At that same tournament, Rafael Nadal inched ever closer to the Most French Open singles titles by a man, as his five now have him just one away from Bjorn Borg’s six. Maybe next June we’ll have to co-crown the Spanish prince of clay as a king.
Brilliant Basketball
June also saw the National Basketball Association award its world title, as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics (both USA) for their 16th NBA title, one behind the Celtics’ record of 17.
In that series we saw two Guinness World Records broken. Lakers head coach Phil Jackson (USA, left) extended his own record for Most NBA championship titles won by a head coach, now at 11, and Celtics sharpshooter Ray Allen (USA) broke the record for Most three-point field goals in an NBA finals game with eight in Game 2 of the series.
What you did this month
As always, the professionals weren’t the only ones breaking records in June. Here’s a portion of what you had certified as Guinness World Records this month:
Fastest half marathon with 40 lb pack: The fastest half marathon whilst wearing a 40 lb pack is 1 hr 44 min 53 sec by Barry Stoddart (UK, below) at the Fleet Half Marathon in Fleet, Hampshire, UK, on 21 March 2010.
Highest inline skate drop into a halfpipe: The record for the highest inline skate drop into a halfpipe was 12 m 50 cm achieved by Taïg Khris during the M6 Mobile Mega Jump event in Paris (France), on 29 May 2010.
Greatest weight deadlifted in one hour: The greatest weight deadlifted in one hour is 40,800 kg (89,948 lb) by Nick Molloy (UK) at Esporta Health Club in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, UK on 22 March 2010.
Most chin ups in one hour: The most chin ups in one hour is 960 by Stephen Hyland (UK) in Stoneleigh, Surrey, UK, on 2 April 2010.
Youngest person to complete a marathon on all seven continents (female): The youngest woman to have completed a marathon on all seven continents is Stefanie Pettersson (Sweden/ Brazil, b. 23 March 1993) who was 17 years and 2 months, when she completed the final Kigali Marathon, Rwanda, Africa, on 23 May 2010.
So there you have it. See you in July!

James Blunt over the moon (well, nearly!) with Highest Concert Record! GWR's Editor-in-Chief joins the jet-set with record-breaking recording artist James Blunt at 42,000 ft Talk about living the high life! Here I am, crisscrossing England on a private jet, sipping Champagne, enjoying an exclusive, live, invite-only personal performance by a world class musician... and I'm getting paid to do this? I ask the Titan Airways hostess to pinch me but all I get is a funny look. So, what record attempt brings me to such heady heights? It is, of course, the highest gig – an attempt by record-breaking recording artist James Blunt to perform a concert to a plane-full of ticketed fans and secure his third Guinness World Record. (Check out the 2007 edition – James makes his first appearance for the sales of his brilliant debut album Back To Bedlam This record attempt – supported by RSA Insurance/MORE TH>N to celebrate the company's 300th anniversary, and realized by London radio station Heart FM – is taking place on board a modified Boeing 767 that took off from Stansted Airport just after miDday on Tuesday 29 June. After a steep climb, the captain announces to the passengers - a mix of competition winners and RSA employees - that we've reached 42,000 ft, sufficient altitude to beat the existing highest concert record of 41,000 ft, set by Norwegian performer Magnet back in March 2007. Ignoring the choppy turbulence, James Blunt appears from a galley kitchen, straps on his guitar and gives a 20-minute concert that includes his classic "You're Beautiful". The 100-strong audience seems to fully appreciate the "gig in the sky", singing along despite the rarefied air, the odd bout of vomitting and a flying tray of Champagne that showers a couple of aisles when the aircraft hits a particularly large pocket of air. The concert is nearly halted when things get really choppy, but by now, James has performed for longer than the pre-requisite 15 minutes demanded by the GWR guidelines. In the end, he manages to polish off four songs and we all return safely to Earth to celebrate. "This is the peak of my career," he jokes as he's awarded his official Guinness World Records certificate, adding that he'll display it with pride in the loo! The Gig in the Sky was staged by the radio station Heart FM and RSA Insurance JAMES BLUNT'S WORLD RECORDS Most albums sold in a single year: James Blunt's (UK) debut album Back to Bedlam (2005) sold an unprecedented 2,368,000 copies in 2005 – more than any other album in a calendar year in the UK. Biggest selling debut album in the UK: James Blunt’s (UK) Back To Bedlam (2005) is the biggest-selling debut album in the UK, with sales up to the end of 2007 of 3.05 million copies. Highest concert: James Blunt (UK) played a concert at 42,080 ft (12,825 m) to a ticketed audience of over 100 people on 29 June 2010. The concert took place on a Boeing 767-300 ER, operated by Titan Airways, that left Stansted Airport in London and flew in circles between Norwich and Cambridge until it reached the maximum height – nearly 8 miles. Blunt, backed on guitar by John Garrison, played a set list lasting 21 min 15 sec. The event was supported by the insurance company MORE TH>N to celebrate the 300th anniversary of its parent company, RSA Insurance, formerly Royal Sun Alliance; the logistics were organized by London radio station Heart and Global Radio.
Nobody said making Guinness World Records history was easy.
The 2010 Wimbledon Championships has seen John Isner (USA, below left) and Nicolas Mahut (France) labour across three gruelling days of tennis to smash a number of new Guinness World Records achievements en route to Isner’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68 victory.
Never in the history of professional tennis have so many records been broken so epically.
It begins with the match itself, easily the Longest professional tennis match, at a time of 11 hours and 5 min. The previous record stood at 6 hours, 33 minutes in a 2004 French Open encounter between Arnaud Clement (France) and Fabrice Santoro (France). To put this in perspective, the 8-hour, 11-minute fifth set alone between Isner (victorious, below) and Mahut lasted longer in time than any other professional tennis match in history.
The men played for so long that it appeared they were on track for the Longest tennis marathon, set at 36 hours, 36 minutes, and 36 seconds and achieved by Jeroen Wagenaar (Netherlands) and Serge Fernando (Netherlands) at the Tennis Society 'T.C. de Kooistee' in Hellevoetsluis, Netherlands, on 12 September 2009.
In terms of professional tennis, though, nobody had ever seen a match like this and most likely never will again.
By default, the match also owns the record for Longest Grand Slam tennis match and of course Longest Wimbledon tennis match. All of the records set by the duo in their meeting have the distinction of holding records at the three different levels.
Naturally within such a match, other records will also tumble. Among these was the Most games played in a professional tennis match. The historic five-set duel saw 183 games played before Isner emerged with the win. This topped the previous record of 122 games in a 1973 Davis Cup doubles match.
En route to his triumph, Isner broke the record for Most aces served in a professional tennis match with 113. Incredibly, Mahut finished with 103 aces of his own, destroying the previous mark of 78 set by Ivo Karlovic (Croatia) in 2009, but still bested by Isner.
The magnificent match most obviously wouldn’t have reached its historic heights without the monster fifth set. It holds a record of its very own, as the Most games played in a professional tennis set with 138, as Isner emerged with the 70-68 result.
Truly a magnificent three days for fans of tennis, sport in general and world records.
After the match, Wimbledon officials justifiably honored both Isner and Mahut for their Herculean efforts in a match the likes we may never see again.
Surely no matter how the rest of the Wimbledon Championships unfold, the 2010 tournament will be remembered for the heroic world-record breaking display between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, forever entwined.

Today we replaced our “loudest scream, whistle, applause and group shout” station with two new record attempts.
One of them is “the fastest time to peel and eat three oranges”,
and the other one is “most orange juice extracted in one minute”.
The station where these two attempts were carried attracted attention immediately. Everybody wanted to give it a try. ventually, we had 3 new record holders.
“The fastest time to peel and eat three oranges” was a new category in Guinness World Records so the maximum duration was 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Our first challenger Mr.Tekiner Sonkurt completed this attempt in 1 minute and 25 seconds.
Congratulations to him! He said that he would come and make another attempt if this record gets broken until Sunday. On the following show, Mr. Onur Ceylan broke the record for “most orange juice extracted in one minute”. Since this attempt was, again, a new category for Guinness World Records, the minimum amount of orange juice to be extracted was 500 ml.
Onur Ceylan set this record by extracting exactly 500 ml of orange juice in one minute. However, he could not hold the record for too long because Mr. Cihan Tunc extracted 700 ml on the very next show and became the new record holder of this category.
The weather was extremely hot today, but the people of Mersin were very successful as you can see.
June 19, 2010
The people of Mersin were out of luck today: They didn’t break any records. It seems they are saving all their energy for tomorrow, which is the last day of GWR Live! Roadshow in Mersin. The record attempts for the fastest time to peel and eat three oranges were really entertaining today. A young challenger, his name is Volkan, got really close to breaking a record. But at least he’s got a lot of vitamins today!
June 20, 2010
Today was our last day at Forum Mersin as well as the last day of our GWR Live! Roadshow. This last day was honoured by three records broken by the people of Mersin! Our young challenger Oguzhan Ozdemir made exactly 36 rotations on the chair in 30 seconds.
Amazing job! Everybody in our team had thought that the record would not be broken anymore, since it was last broken at Forum Ankara Outlet with 34 rotations.
Then Mr. Ulas Bas broke the record for the most orange juice extracted in one minute with 800 ml. This record belonged to Mersin with 700 ml previously.
Finally, on our last show, Mr. Tekiner Sonkurt broke the record for the fastest time to peel and eat three oranges. He had already become the holder of this record two days ago, with 1 minute and 25 seconds.
Today, he broke his own record with 1 minute and 16 seconds. Congratulations!
And this is our goodbye to Forum Mersin and the end of our Guinness World Records Live! Roadshow in TURKEY. Thanks a lot to all our challengers and audience.
Also, on behalf of my whole team, I would like to thank to Forum Istanbul, Forum Ankara Outlet, Forum Kapadokya, Forum Camlik/Denizli, Forum Aydin, Forum Bornova/Izmir, Forum Trabzon and Forum Mersin for their great organisation and hospitality!
The last but not the least, I would like to thank our hosts Pinar Akatlar and Görkem Büyükkahraman, who were with me for this last 6 months, Eda Yildiz who was our archivist,
and Mine Erisir, my right-hand and archivist at Forum Istanbul, and all our coaches all over Turkey! They all did a great job!
Farewell to everyone!
Also, I would like to thank GWR Live! Director Paul O'Neil and GWR Live! Creative Director Adam Wide for supporting us during the whole 6 months. Thanks to Marco Frigatti (GWR Vice President of Records), Andrea Banfi (Head of Adjudications), Louis Toms and Ralph Hannah (Records Manager), Kelly Garrett (Global Director of Human Resources) and everyone at Guinness World Records London and New York offices for their help and contributions!
With love and respect,

950 TRAIL RIDERS SADDLED UP AND MADE HISTORY DURING A NATIONWIDE FUNDRAISER HOSTED BY ACTHA TO SAVE THE AMERICAN WORK HORSE
All Proceeds From the Guinness World Records® Breaking Event Were Donated by ACTHA to Horse Rescue Charities Across the United States
Austin, TX (June 16, 2010) – The American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) made horse riding history with the first ever Guinness World Records achievement for the Largest Trail Riding Competition on Sunday June 13, 2010. A total of 950 riders participated in the record breaking achievement that successfully raised over $69,000 for horse rescue programs across the nation.
On the day of the event riders gathered in 24 states to compete in local trail rides that were organized by ACTHA for the official Guinness World Records attempt, in which riders competed on six-mile trails comprised of safe, fun and natural trail obstacles, that were observed by professional judges. In addition to the riding participants, over 622 volunteers across the nation pitched in to make the days events possible.
“Every volunteer on this monumental effort will have a special place in our hearts and the hearts of the noble horse and equines everywhere,” said Tom Scrima, General Manager of ACTHA, a three-year-old registry and sanctioning body for competitive trail horses and rides. “We asked ourselves, ‘How can we make a bigger impact?’ Our goal is to create enough jobs for the American horses and equines in the next 3 years so that the entire slaughter issue will be a non-issue’”
To qualify for the record, the guidelines stipulated that the competitive trail ride would have a minimum of 250 riders competing in at least 10 venues with a minimum of 25 riders per site. For this attempt, only trail rides sanctioned by ACTHA were counted. Each trail ride had several divisions with one overall winner for each competition. All proceeds from this national event were donated to horse rescue charities and programs across America.
The simultaneous record attempt culminated in a certificate presentation by an official Guinness World Records representative to Lisa Ericson, ACTHA’s local Nevada affiliate, on behalf of all of the volunteers, local ride mangers, ACTHA staff and sponsors that made this event possible. The presentation was held during Clinton Anderson’s Walkabout Tour at the renowned South Point Equestrian and Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.

Loudest shout, scream, whistles and appplause

Most cushions covered in 1 minute
11 June 2010
We have an open air stage at Forum Mersin, just like Forum Izmir and Forum Aydin. All our team enjoys being out in the sun. All our stations attracted the attention of the people of Mersin and they were swarming with people throughout the day. Even the terraces of the shopping mall were crowded.
For our show at 19:00, Hakan Gürlü shared the record for „most chair rotations in 30 seconds“.He rotated 34 times in 30 seconds The current record holder in this category is Salim Mert Yazgaç from Forum Ankara Outlet.
6 people attempted to break the record for the loudest group shout at our last show, but they didn’t succeed.
12 June 2010
The people of Mersin got very close to breaking records today, but they couldn’t make it. The shopping mall was very crowded and GWR Live! Roadshow was the center of attraction.
Our coaches were really busy, assisting people who want to be records holders. All our shows were full and we even had to keep challengers in line. The people of Mersin are really determined, but can they break the records?
13 June 2010
It was very hot today and yet all our stations were full of people. The people of Mersin spent a lot of effort today. There was a group of 7-8 people, and each of them joined in one of our shows.
Unfortunately, no records were broken. Since Mersin is known for its oranges, we will have two special record attempts that involves oranges. One of them is „the fastest time to peel and eat 3 oranges“ and the other is „most orange juice extracted in one minute“.
In addition to that Mr. Ilker Cevik known as the YOMA men will attempt the existing record for “FASTEST TIME TO PUT SIX EGGS IN EGG CUPS USING THE FEET”!. The current record for this category is 42.60 seconds and was achieved by Tatiana Dudzan (Ukraine) in 2008.
Let’s see what will happen!
Keep on following us! See you next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Greetings from Mersin!

4 June 2010 - Fourth day
The GWR Live! Roadshow is a new experience for the people of Trabzon but they are getting used to it. The mall got crowded after 4pm. Our balloon station attracted most of the attention.

Finally, a record was broken at 7pm. Nuran Özdemir broke the record for the fastest time to undress a female mannequin in 28.57 seconds. This record was previously broken at Forum Camlik/Denizli, with 34 seconds. After I announced the timing, Nuran Özdemir hugged and thanked everyone. She was so happy that she even embraced the mannequin! Congratulations!

People of Trabzon spent a lot of effort today, but there were no records broken. Everybody waited for the special record attempt “Kolbasti dance-most steps in one minute”, which was going to take place at 5pm. When the hour came, KTU Karadeniz Usaklari performed a marvellous Kolbasti dance. Then our contestant Mr. Adem Asik started his record attempt. Guinness World Records had set the number of steps to be 230 in order for the record to be broken.
After the attempt, I counted all the steps, watching the video record of the dance on slow motion. We congratulate Mr. Asik because he is the owner of this the record with 320 steps. He was so happy that his feet got off the ground. There were members of the press and everybody was interviewed by them. The story was covered the following day on newspapers, television channels and the Internet.
6 June 2010- Sixth day
We had a very delicious record attempt today: “Most anchovies gutted in 8 hours”. Mr. Bektas Ozdemir from Kirikkale started this record attempt at 8am and ended it at 4pm.
Guinness World Records had set the bottom limit for the gutted anchovies to 15,000. Mr. Ozdemir gutted the anchovies for 8 hours, with no breaks. He ate some of them during the record attempt.
I counted the anchovies in intervals. Yes, I counted them one by one.
At the end of the attempt, there was only 14,327 anchovies gutted. Therefore this record attempt was not valid. Mr. Ozdemir said he will try it once again in the future. We thank him a lot for his efforts.
We were going to have “the largest Horon dance” record attempt but only 105 of the participants arrived. There had to be at least 250 according to the Guinness World Records guidelines. The participants were not demotivated, and they performed an amazing horon dance show in their traditional clothes. We would like to thank them once again!
Now we have to say goodbye to Forum Trabzon.
I would like to thank all the people of Trabzon, as well as Mr. Dinçer, Mrs. Esma and Mrs. Esra from Forum Trabzon managemnet. Thanks for such a nice organization. You have been wonderful hosts.
We are moving to Forum Mersin next. We will be there on 11-20 June, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Greetings from the Black Sea!

BBC Radio 1Xtra DJs Rampage (Treble T and Mike Anthony) along with special guest DJs this weekend (Saturday 5th June 2010) broke the Guinness World Record for the World's Longest Club Session DJ Relay.
The station broke the record by creating one long continuous DJ club mix, with each tune being mixed in by a different DJ. All tunes had to be perfectly beatmatched, without any musical clangs.
To help with the ambitious mission, BBC Radio 1Xtra assembled a huge line-up of DJs from across the musical spectrum, including award-winners, prominent club DJs and Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra DJs from both past and present.
These included Radio 1Xtra DJs Trevor Nelson, Seani B, Twin B and Target; Radio 1's Vernon Kay and guest DJs including Mark Ronson, Kenny Ken, MJ Cole, Wookie and Crazy Cousins.
There were two attempts - the first was kicked off by BBC Radio 1Xtra's Trevor Nelson along with special guest DJ Mark Ronson at 2pm. The second attempt, which broke the record, was started by In New 1Xtra DJs We Trust DJ, Illmana.
The event took place at the Vibe Bar in London’s East End. The aim was to reach 60 tracks to break the previous world record of 59, which was set on 18th June 2003 at D-Train, Bridge & Tunnel Club, London. After reaching 60, the 1Xtra DJs and guests kept going and eventually finished at a massive 82 tracks!
The record breaking track, Benga & Coki's 'Night', was played live on air at 5.22pm by Rampage’s Treble T during Ace & Vis’ Radio 1Xtra Show. Treble T said: "We've had a great day and, to see all my DJ friends in one place, has been incredible. The fact that we all came together to smash this world record has made me truly proud and really emotional."
The event was the climax of a week long on-air celebration focused on the art of DJ Mix culture on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

ESTÉE LAUDER GLOBAL MAKE-UP STYLIST MAKES COSMETIC HISTORY WITH THE HELP OF 303 PUCKERED LIPS
New Guinness World Records Achievement Set by Rick DiCecca at Macy’s Flagship Store in Downtown Chicago on Friday, June 4
Chicago, IL (June 4, 2010) – On Friday June 4, 2010, Estée Lauder broke the world record for most lipstick applications in one hour at Macy’s historic State Street location in downtown Chicago. Record-breaker and Estée Lauder Global Makeup Stylist, Rick DiCecca, applied lipstick on 303 participants to successfully break the previous record of 180 applications.
Chicagoans lined up at 12:00 pm on the ground floor of Macy’s on State Street and puckered up for DiCecca to work his magic. The feat was witnessed by an official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, Danny Girton, who verified that the attempt adhered to the strict guidelines of the record category and presented DiCecca with a certificate documenting his new world record.

“I am ecstatic to now hold the very first Guinness World Records achievement for Estée Lauder,” said DiCecca, who travels the world as a brand ambassador and creative consultant. “As a makeup artist, I’m used to working under pressure and this success was definitely a new and different way to challenge my skills.”
Guidelines for the record category stipulate that the lipstick must be applied consistently on the lower and upper lip of each model and the color must be within the lip lines. A different lipstick for each model must be used although any variety and color of lipstick is permitted. DiCecca needed both precision and speed to smash the previous record of 180 applications set by a European makeup artist in Madrid, Spain, on March 3rd of this year.
The record attempt kicked off at approximately 12:00pm for exactly sixty minutes and was followed by the official certificate presentation by the Guinness World Records judge.

Abu Dhabi, 07 June 2010: CAPITAL GATE, owned and developed in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, by ADNEC (Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company), has been certified as the ‘World’s Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower,’ by Guinness World Records.
CAPITAL GATE (www.capitalgate.ae) has been built to lean 18 degrees westwards - more than four times that of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa – and, earned the Guinness World Records recognition after rigorous evaluation by the Awards Committee since January 2010, when the exterior of the 160-metre (524.9 ft), 35-storey tower was completed.
Commenting on CAPITAL GATE’s record-breaking achievement, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, ADNEC’s Chairman said: “CAPITAL GATE is a landmark development for Abu Dhabi and with this recognition the tower takes its place among the world’s great buildings. It is a signature building which speaks to the fore-sight of the emirate”.
CAPITAL GATE’s floor plates are stacked vertically up to the 12th storey after which, they are staggered over each other by between 300mm to 1400mm giving rise to the tower’s dramatic lean.
The tower features other innovative construction techniques including the world’s first known use of a ‘pre-cambered’ core, which contains more than 15,000 cubic metres of concrete reinforced with 10,000 tons of steel. The core, deliberately built slightly off centre, has straightened as the building has risen, compressing the concrete and giving it strength, and moving into (vertical) position as the weight of the floors has been added.
“CAPITAL GATE has been a true design-and-build project from the very start. There have been numerous challenges, which I am pleased to say we have surmounted thanks to a structured partnering programme and the hard work and commitment of everyone involved. Both ADNEC and our partners have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to create an iconic structure which is not only distinctive in appearance but also extremely functional,” said His Excellency Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, ADNEC’s Managing Director.
When fully complete by the end of this year, CAPITAL GATE will house the 5-star Hyatt Capital Gate hotel as well as approximately 20,000sqm of premium office space.
Peter Fulton, Managing Director, Hyatt International, South West Asia commented, “This is indeed a proud day for all of us involved with CAPITAL GATE. We are fortunate to have been given the opportunity to showcase our hotel in one of the Middle East’s most significant developments. Along with our partners at ADNEC, we hope to be able to offer a unique and authentic guest experience that will complement this iconic structure, making it the preferred address in Abu Dhabi for the discerning traveller.”
CAPITAL GATE was designed by international architecture firm RMJM and is adjacent to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre within ADNEC’s Capital Centre.
“RMJM has a 40 year history of designing and delivering world class buildings in the Middle East. The award of this world record substantiates this and puts both CAPITAL GATE and Abu Dhabi firmly on the world stage, and at the cutting edge of global architecture. RMJM are delighted to have been instrumental in this pioneering achievement,” said Nick Haston, RMJM Middle East CEO
Besides CAPITAL GATE’S gravity-defying lean and its pre-cambered core, the tower has several other elements that enhance its reputation as one of the world’s most distinctive projects:
· Each room is different as is each pane of façade glass and every interior angle.
· CAPITAL GATE’s shell comprises a super-strong exo-skeleton called the diagrid that carries all the weight of the floors while also providing an unobstructed floor plate precluding the need for pillars or internal beams. Other high-profile buildings that use diagrid technology include New York’s Hearst Tower, the Swiss Re building (‘The Gherkin’) in London and Beijing’s CCTV tower.
· CAPITAL GATE’s double-glazed façade achieves greater energy efficiency with waste air being pre-cooled between the inner and outer façades, before being expelled.
· The tower’s façade glass is of low emissivity and is the first time it has been used in the UAE. It keeps the building’s interior cool and eliminates glare, while maintaining transparency.
· The distinctive stainless steel ‘splash’ that descends from the 19th floor, is a design element and a shading device that eliminates over 30 percent of the sun’s heat before it reaches the building. The splash also twists around the building towards the south to shield the tower as much as possible from direct sunlight.
· CAPITAL GATE’s 19th storey outdoor swimming pool has an unrivalled panoramic view.
· A cantilevered tea lounge overhangs the tower’s exterior, 80m above the ground.
· CAPITAL GATE also has an internal diagrid that has been used to create a tapered, 60m high atrium.
· The tower’s foundation is a dense mesh of reinforced steel above 490 piles, drilled 20 - 30 meters underground.
CAPITAL GATE’s status as one of the world’s most complex engineering projects has been further endorsed by a recent exclusive National Geographic television documentary. The ‘Megastructures’ programme devoted to the project – ‘The Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’ - has been translated into 44 languages and will be broadcast in 166 countries reaching a potential audience of 200 million viewers. ‘The Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi’ is due to air in the Middle East next month.

One of the best things about this time of the year – besides summer holidays, strolls through the park, and the chance to work on your sun tan until after dinner – is high-caliber sports reaching championship season.
Think about the ongoing stretch of spring we sports fans are in the middle of enjoying: a Champions League final, The Masters, a Twenty20 World Cup, the French Open, the NBA Finals, and a FIFA World Cup on the way. Not bad.
But let’s not forget about the world’s marquee ice hockey competition: the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Finals, currently being waged between the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks.
As of this posting, the favored Blackhawks hold a 2-games-to-1 lead over the Flyers in the best-of-seven series to determine who gets to take Lord Stanley’s cup to the movies and eat popcorn out of it.
The games so far have been exciting and tightly contested, fully expected from two teams trying so desperately to end long championship droughts. And it’s with these respective decades of frustration that we begin our look at this year’s finals through the world-record lens.
Entering this series, Chicago has gone 49 years without hoisting one of the most iconic trophies in sport – astonishing considering its place in one of the sport’s biggest markets and its status as one of the famed Original Six members of the NHL. Philadelphia, meanwhile (a city which saw all four of its major American sports franchises go without titles from 1982-2009) has waited 35 years since its last Cup.
Both impressive, but not quite Guinness World Records-worthy. No, the record for “Longest time between Stanley Cup victories” belongs to the New York Rangers, who waited 54 years after triumphing in 1940 to win their next Cup. Pictured is captain Mark Messier, the only man to ever captain two teams to Stanley Cup glory, doing so with the Edmonton Oilers in 1990 before helping end “The Curse of 1940” on Broadway.

I have a feeling that despite their respective droughts not being as long, whichever side wins the series will have a similar kid-on-Christmas reaction to Messier’s. And actually, they might have no reaction at all, as this brilliant TV ad shows just how humbling winning the Cup can be.
And it will be the respective captain who gets to hoist the Cup first. Both sides feature young C’s: Philadelphia’s Mike Richards is only 25 and Chicago’s Jonathan Toews (pictured) a mere 22.
These two highlight the trend of how great it is to be a young captain in the NHL these days, as Sidney Crosby set the record for “Youngest captain of a Stanley Cup winning team” just last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins at age 21 years 10 months 5 days.
So that’s what is at stake in these finals: a pair of young leaders hoping to guide their teams and long-suffering cities to the promised land on ice.
Lastly, we’ve already had one astonishing accomplishment this year by one of the participants, as Philadelphia became the “Earliest team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in a Stanley Cup playoffs series” in NHL history, doing so against the Boston Bruins to stay alive in the Eastern Conference finals and reach the final battle.
What that means? Keep an eye on this series until the very end – never know what you might see.
