  The success of the 5th annual Guinness World Records Day – celebrated this November 12 – has proved once again that the public has an insatiable appetite for witnessing or participating in world record events. An estimated 250,000 people took part in this year’s events, helping to raise thousands of dollars for various charities and drawing attention to the fun and excitement that can be had when trying to get your name in the world’s best-selling copyright book.
  
  Kicking off events outside the Sydney Opera House in Australia were a group of skimpily clad exhibitionists striving to break the record for the largest swimwear parade; sadly, only 235 people turned up – not enough to qualify for the record – demonstrating that not every attempts leads to a Guinness World Record!
  
  After the disappointing start, things quickly started looking up. Multiple record holder Alistair Galpin of New Zealand bagged himself not one but three records – for Champagne-cork spitting, coin blowing, and Malteser (malt ball) spitting. In China, Tao Yongming set a new Guinness World Record for fastest ascent of a sand dune on a motorcycle, while in Egypt, Heshim Nessim also set a new standard for the fastest vehicle crossing of the Egyptian desert.
  
  Soon, half of the planet was indulging in record breaking. In Turkey, the concrete was flying as strongman Ali Bahecepete hacked away at the most concrete blocks broken in 30 seconds and in 1 minute, and in Albania, artist Saimir Strati turned art on its head and crafted the largest mosaic made out of paint brushes. In the Middle East, Lebanese model-maker Toufic Daher erected the tallest matchstick model (of the Eiffel Tower) and fellow countryman Nabil Karam did an official count of his largest collection of model cars (22,222!).
  
  As Europeans woke up to the morning news, they began to hear stories of the most translated comic book, The Adventures of Asterix by Goscinny and Uderzo, the latter of whom was on hand to accept his Guinness World Records certificate. The most nationalities in a sauna (Finland) followed, along with the fastest human wheelbarrow (also Finland), the fastest time to eat a bowl of pasta (Italy), the fastest time to eat and peel three lemons (Denmark), and the largest gingerbread man (Norway) – presented to the IKEA Furuset in Oslo by Sultan Kosen, the world’s tallest man!
  
  The Germans put on a particularly good show, tackling at least seven Guinness World Records, from the farthest distance reached on a water slide to the most dominoes stacked on a single piece. But beating the Germans in the numbers game was the UK, with eight attempts including most couples hugging in a minute, longest conga on ice and fastest time to inflate and burst a hot-water bottle. The highlight in the UK was Manjit Singh – the “Iron Man of Leicester” – establishing a record for the farthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with the hair.
  
  By now, the United States was awake and raring to get their fair share of record breaking action. First off the blocks was the largest cup of hot chocolate in New York, followed by the largest collection of lipstick prints by the Big Apple’s Cosmopolitan magazine. And the records kept on falling: In Memphis, Tennessee, the Universal Cheerleaders Association broke the largest cheerleading dance by 72 people, and in Fort Worth, Texas, the Stockyards Championship Rodeo established the record for the most people lassoing simultaneously.
  
  As the sun set on the day, some records were still underway, others had yet to be reported back to Guinness World Records’ head office in London. What was sure, though, was that it had been a great day of record breaking. Congratulations to all those who took part, and commiserations to everyone who failed to make the mark! To those disheartened, don’t worry, you’ve got a year to get back into training for GWR Day 2010.

Fastest vehicle crossing the E

  Abu Simbel, November 2009 - After breaking the record for the fastest vehicle crossing the Great Sand Sea, and under the auspices of the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority, the Egyptian adventurer, Hesham Nessim, achieved his second Guinness World Records record on 11 November 2009, in the Western Desert using one vehicle driving from Siwa to Abu Simbel.
  
  The record was part of Guinness World Records day (12 November 2009) where thousands of people from all around the world attempted different records to join Guinness World Records celebrating this special day.
  
  The journey started from Siwa Oasis in the far north west of Egypt on the 10 of November 2009 at 6.30 am covering a distance of approximately 1370 km till the ending point in Abu Simbel which is situated in the far south east of Egypt. A Guinness World Records™ adjudicator was kept up to date with progress of the journey every hour via GPS.
  
  To prepare for this adventure, Hesham Nessim has made three discovery trials in preparation for the Fastest Vehicle Crossing the Egyptian Western Desert adventure in cooperation with the Land Rover Car Company that provided Hesham Nessim with a land Rover LR4 car.
  
  The distance covered by Hesham Nessim consisted of three phases, the first phase was the great sand sea area which covers an area of approximately 600 km, followed by the open desert and reaching the final stage in crossing the mountains and rocks area. The crossing was achieved in 13 hours and 54 minutes with an average speed of 110 km per hour.
  
  The Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority has sponsored the event in significance to its strategy to highlight the natural beauty of the Western Desert.
  
  In a press conference after the successful record attempt, Guinness World Records Adjudicator Talal Omar presented an official GWR certificate and confirmed Mr. Nessim’s terrific achievement.

Where in the World is Sultan?

  As they head even further north, Sultan, Hassan and Kelly visit Norway where more global mania breaks out amongst the masses when our 8 ft 1 in tall friend makes an appearance! Read on...
  
  We arrived in Oslo, Norway on Tuesday evening and settled into yet another hotel room fit for a King. In fact, the former Tallest Man in the World also stayed in the same room during his visit to Norway!
  
  We had an early start the next morning for an appearance on NRK TV, Norway’s morning news show followed by a couple of newspaper interviews. After that, we headed for Vigelandsparken or Vigeland Sculpture Park, a landmark beautiful park that covers 80 acres and features 212 bronze and granite sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland. NRK Dagsrevyen News selected the backdrop of an area called The Children’s Playground to interview Sultan. The area is a collaboration of eight bronze statues, all in the likenesses of children at play. The most famous figure is Sinnataggen, the little Angry Boy, a bigger than life brat which Sultan finds quite amusing. The facial scowl and generally frustrated stance seems to make this among the most popular of the sculptures and has been stolen several times!
  
  Sultan stopped at the local crèche for a quick visit before heading to VG Nett, an internet based news channel where he answered questions live from people writing in. His day ended with a book signing at the Norli Bookstore Ski Storsenter where hundreds lined up to meet him.
  
  On Thursday, Sultan started the day with an interview at Radio P4 which kindly presented him with a typical Norwegian sweater made especially for him. This came in handy as temperatures in Norway continued to drop - BRRRR! The highlight of the day was a visit to Oslo’s IKEA store which was celebrating Guinness World Records Day by breaking the record for the Largest Gingerbread Man weighing a staggering 651 kilos! After unveiling the Gingerbread Man, Sultan posed for photos with another GWR Record Breaker, Narve Laeret who currently holds the world record for the most concrete blocks smashed in 30 seconds which he achieved in Turkey on GWR day last year.
  
  We also made a stop at the Skoda showroom where sultan got to try out one of Skoda’s latest models and posed for a few photos with the car.
  
  Once again, Sultan wrapped up his day signing books at another bookstore only this time the crowds were much larger and definitely rowdier - yikes! Sultan heads home to Turkey tomorrow, but stay tuned for his next stop……Italia!
  
  PS: On the flight home to London, Kelly was surprised to learn that the gentleman sitting on the adjacent row just happened to be His Royal Highness, the King of Norway himself! That Kelly just can't stop hobnobbing with the rich and famous!

North Sulawesi art and culture

  Just over two months ago I was in Manado, Indonesia, to adjudicate the successful record attempt for the most people scuba diving simultaneously organised as part of the celebration for the international event Sail Bunaken 2009. In this occasion for the first time I saw the world’s largest trumpet proudly showing off in a parade through the city centre of Manado and I asked to meet the people behind the creation of the huge instrument.
  
  The following day I was taken by the organisers of the scuba diving world record on a journey across natural and beautiful sceneries to the Art and Culture Institute of North Sulawesi, a magical place situated in Kinali village and dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of the traditions and arts of North Sulawesi.
  Here I learnt a about the importance of kolintang and bamboo music between the people of Minahasa and found great inspiration for a potential new worldwide record breaking event in Indonesia.
  
  On the 31st of October I was already back in Manado, from London, to be part of the North Sulawesi art and culture festival 2009 and to meet Mr. Benny Mamoto the organiser of the for records attempts in one day for the largest trumpet, the largest kolintang, the largest kolintang ensamble and the largest orchestra playing on bamboo instruments, all in Tondano, capital of Minahasa.
  
  Mr. Benny Mamoto in the last few years has dedicated a big part of his life to a large range of activities for the development and promotion of the Minahansan culture as for a promise he made to his father before his death, of re launching the culture of North Sulawesi within Indonesia and all around the world.
  
  In the magnificent countryside surroundings of the Tondano Maesa stadium 1223 Kolintang players, each with mallets and a kolintang set, started the celebration by playing at the unison two traditional songs entitled “Aki Tembo- temboan” and “Minahasa Kina Toanku” and setting the first world record of the day for the largest kolintang ensamble.
  
  The kolintang is a melodious instrument made of wood pieces, arranged like piano keys and it is believed to be originated in the Minahasa region.
  In occasion of the North Sulawesi Arts and Cultures festival the largest kolintang measuring 8 meters in length and 2.5 meters in height was presented to the media and to the spectators, together with the 32 meters long world’s largest trumpet of the diameter of 5,20 meters.
  
  Both instruments required many days of workmanship to manufacture and are perfectly playable with the need of three people to operate the Kolintang and the help of a compressor for the trumpet.
  
  But more to come for the thousand of musicians lined up behind the kolintangs display and filling up the stadium field, ready to attempt another record for the largest orchesta playing on bamboo instruments.
  
  Playing on instruments made of bamboo is common in Indonesia and the bamboo orchestra proposes a different access to music by entering the relationship between man and nature.
  
  Under the influence of the Iberian and Dutch orchestra during three centuries of occupation and one century formal education in schools, the Minahasan people have taken over the European musical tradition and developed the single bamboo flute into a complete orchestra, made from bamboo materials. Nowadays most Minahasan villages have a bamboo music orchestra to perform on special out-door festivities, such as weddings and ceremonies.
  The power of the bamboo musical sound creates a unique listening experience without the use of any electric instruments and therefore suitable to the poor rural condition of living without electricity.
  
  In Tondano 3011 people performed together a variety of instruments entirely made from bamboo and delighted the crowd with a touching symphony and a new world record award for Indonesia.
  
  An unforgettable day the 31st of October for North Sulawesi and a celebration of the arts and cultures of a fantastic country, Indonesia, where music plays a leading role in people’s everyday life.
  
  Across its many islands, Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, with the world's largest population of Muslims and consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups and Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally, "many, yet one"), articulates the diversity that shapes the country.
  
  Commotion and satisfaction for Mr. Benny Mamoto, organiser of the event, and for all the thousands of people and musicians who worked hard to achieve for new world records in one day during the North Sulawesi Arts and Culture festival 2009 event, expression of the rich Minahasan culture shared now with the all world.

GWR Day - Most Concrete Blocks

  Datca Turkey, November 2009 - Record holder Ali Bahcepete is back for Guinness World Records Day 2009 and will try to break his own records for the most concrete blocks broken in one minute and most concrete blocks broken in a single stack.
  
  He will also be attempting to get his record for the most concrete blocks broken in 30 seconds back – record currently held by his Norwegian competitor Narve Laeret.
  
  Ali Bahcepete has been performing Taekwondo for over 42 years and won 10 world championships organised by the Taekwondo World Federation for concrete blocks breaking, including two in the year 2009.
  
  The event will take place on 12th November in Datcha, Turkey as part of Guinness World Records Day 2009 and for the Datca Sport Club’s charity.

GWR Day: Fastest vehicle cross

  Cairo, November 2009 - After breaking the record for the fastest crossing of the Great Sand Sea, the Egyptian adventurer, Hesham Nessim, plans to set another Guinness World Records record on the 10th of November 2009, in the Western Desert using one vehicle driving from Siwa to Abu Simbel.
  
  The record will be part of Guinness World Records day (12 November 2009) where thousands of people from all around the world will attempt different records to join Guinness World Records celebrating this special day.
  
  The starting point will be Siwa oasis and the end point is the city of Abu Simbel. Nessim will attempt to drive an average of 1,250 km to 1,350 km in one shot in 14 to 18 hours.
  
  Talal Omar, an official Guinness World Records adjudicator will fly to the Egyptian city Abu Simbel which is situated in the southern part of Egypt on the western bank of Lake Nasser about 290 km southwest of Aswan. The adjudicator will be informed with the updates & location each hour through GPS.

Celebrated to commemorate the day in 2004 when Guinness World Records became the world’s bestselling copyright book of all time, Guinness World Records Day attracts hundreds of thousands of record-breakers around the world every year - in a true spirit of philanthropy and fun.
  
  As in previous years, wacky and wonderful Brits promise to showcase their talent and raise money for their favourite charities on Guinness World Records Day. Among the dozens of attempts planned around the country, London will host the big comeback of 59-year old Manjit Singh who will perform a hair-raising attempt for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with hair (New World Record). Also in the Capital, commuters will literally come together at St Pancras Station for the most people hugging for one minute (100), while hundreds will descend on Alexandra Palace as they attempt to skate their way into the records book for the longest conga on ice (107). In Southampton the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will team up with Justdance Salsa for the largest salsa dance (451). Demonstrating his physical strength in support of the British Heart Foundation, “British Master’s Squat Power Lifting Champion” Shaun Jones from Norwich hopes to grab the title for most weight squat lifted in one hour (41,600kg) and the fastest hot water bottle burst (51.98 secs). In Northern Ireland, Oaks Shopping Centre will celebrate Guinness World Records Day with a record attempt for largest human mattress dominoes (121) to raise money for Marie Curie cancer nurses, and Ballyclare High School will hold the largest sports lesson (250).   Meanwhile, Carr’s Glen Primary School in Belfast celebrates it 70th anniversary by organising the largest gathering of people dressed as storybook characters (NWR).

  Measuring In At A “Mammoth” 48 Feet Tall, The New Record Coincides With The Animated Adventure’s Blu-ray And DVD Release
  
  LOS ANGELES, CA. (October 27, 2009) – Things got a little chilly in Southern California Tuesday as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment broke the Guinness World Record for Tallest
  Ice Sculpture timed with the Blu-ray and DVD release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Sculpted by innovative ice company Ice Bulb, the 48-foot-8-inch creation, reaching over four stories high, broke the previous record by nearly 8 feet.
  
  Officially unveiled at ICE at Santa Monica, Downtown Santa Monica’s outdoor ice skating rink, the project took months of collaboration to create, with artists from Blue Sky Studios developing the overall look of the ice sculpture depicting lovable squirrel Scrat and his giant acorn. Over 133,000 pounds of ice, gathered across four states, was used as a team of 14 skilled sculptors from Ice Bulb worked four straight days to finish the job.
  
  “It’s only fitting that we build a record breaking Scrat Ice Sculpture to go along with the massively successful Ice Age franchise, and unveil it on the day that Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs arrives on Blu-ray Disc and DVD,” said Mary Daily, Executive Vice President, Marketing, North America for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “It is just more reason to celebrate.”
  
  The previous record for Tallest Ice Sculpture of 40.28 feet was held by Michel Amman in Ski Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates on April 20, 2006. This new record was verified by Guinness World Records official, Danny Girton Jr. who was on-site to inspect the sculpture.
  
  “The effort and workmanship that went into creating this ice sculpture is truly astounding. This type of record takes serious time and commitment and we’re happy to recognize a new Guinness World Record today,” Girton said.

  London, UK (22nd of October, 2009) – The global authority on record-breaking achievement, Guinness World Records, today launched an exact replica of the very first “Guinness Book of Records” in a limited and individually-numbered facsimile edition available exclusively for purchase at the company’s website (www.guinnessworldrecords.com).
  
  The phenomenon of Guinness World Records began in September 1955 when the Chairman of the Guinness Brewery, Sir Hugh Beaver, decided to publish a volume of definite facts, in hopes that such a book would put an end to pub arguments. The very first Guinness Book of Records was printed in 1,000 copies with a plastic cover to protect it from beer stains and despite an initial skepticism from retailers (WHSmith ordered five copies), the book became an instant hit, was reprinted and reached bestseller status by Christmas the same year.
  
  55 years later, the current Guinness World Records 2010 edition is published in 26 languages, 3 million copies and sold in 100 countries around the world. Although the popularity of Guinness World Records has remained steady for half a century the world that the record-keeping company measures has certainly seen some changes.
  
  Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, said: “The world is moving at a dizzying pace and we’ve been there documenting and celebrating the changes for half a century. By reproducing our very first edition, we can offer a snapshot of the world in the 1950s and a true sense of how our planet and its inhabitants have changed in the past 55 years.”
  
  “Guinness Book of Records” will take today’s readers back to a time when the most expensive bottle of perfume was Jean Patou’s “joy” from Paris retailing at 103 s. 6d. per ¼ oz (£225 per pint), compared to the current record attributed to the limited edition of Clive Christian No.1 Collection priced at £115,000 ($205,000) per 500 ml (17 fl oz); and the tallest building was the Empire State Building in New York at 448.7 m (1,472 ft), which is nearly half the size of the Burj Dubai, “Dubai Tower,” which today tops out at a record breaking 818 m (2,648 ft).
  
  Readers will also notice that a category such as “uncontrolled drinking,” which is no longer monitored by Guinness World Records, appears in the very first edition with record holders Auguste Maffrey (France) and Spaniard Dionsio Sanchez (Spain), who consumed 24 pints of beer in 52 minutes and 40 pints of wine in 59 minutes, respectively. Other records remain unbroken until this day, including the largest diamond (a 3106 carat diamond found in 1905 in South Africa) and the tallest man ever (American Robert Pershing Wadlow 2.72 m - 8 ft 11.1 in). Not to mention the largest pandemic (Black Death in 1347 eradicating around a quarter of the population of Europe and some 75 million worldwide) - a record which thankfully has not been surpassed in modern times.

  • Present Day: Lake Baikal in the southern part of eastern Siberia, Russia is the deepest lake in the world. It is 620 km (385 miles) long and 32-74 km (20-46 miles) wide.   GUINNESS WORLD RECORD SHATTERED BY CITIZENS ACROSS GLOBE DEMANDING THAT THEIR LEADERS END POVERTY
  More than 173 Million People Gather at “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!” events, setting new world record for largest mobilization in history
  
  A Guinness World Record shattered this weekend when 173,045,325 citizens gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!”, now in its fourth year, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest mobilization of human beings in recorded history, an increase of about 57 million people over last year.
  
  “The more than 173 million people who mobilized this weekend sent a clear message to world leaders that there is massive, universal, global demand for eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals,” said Salil Shetty, Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. “In particular, we have seen citizens determined to show their governments that they will hold them accountable for keeping their promises to end hunger, improve maternal health and abolish trade-distorting agricultural subsidies. They will not accept excuses for breaking promises to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, who have already been hardest hit by the global food, economic and climate crises they had no role in causing.”
  
  In Asia more than 100 million people participated (101,106,845); in Africa more than 37 million people participated (37,848,412); in the Arab region more than 31 million people participated (31,394,459); in Europe more than 2 million people participated (2,102,121); in Latin America more than 200,000 people participated (229,371); in North America nearly 200,000 people participated (191,535); and in Oceania more than 170,000 people participated (172,582).
  
  "Stand Up is proven to be a growing global mobilization, as well as an ongoing grass roots movement from remote areas and cities in so many countries, both rich and poor,” said Sylvia Borren, Co-chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), who attended several “Stand Up” events across The Netherlands last weekend. “These are the voices of young people, women and men demanding the eradication of poverty, and new answers to the food, economic and climate crises. We will carry this overwhelming message forward in the weeks and months ahead to influence both the Copenhagen climate discussions and next year's MDG review.”
  
  Currently 1 billion people around the world are hungry and 500,000 women continue to die annually as the result of pregnancy and childbirth. The vast majority of these deaths are preventable.
  
  The mobilization was organized globally by the United Nations Millennium Campaign, in partnership with a range of organizations including the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP).
  
  The 3,000 events across every inhabited continent this weekend included:
  
  In New York, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon lead schoolchildren in Standing Up on Friday.
  
  In Bangladesh, civil society campaigners raised the call “National Unity Can Eradicate Poverty,” urging that a “Poverty and Hunger Free Bangladesh is Possible Now.” The Prime Minister led the nation in pledging to remain united to develop the country by 2020. At a rally in Dhaka, she called upon all political parties to jointly fight corruption and stabilize democracy.
  
  Despite the typhoons that hit the Philippines just before “Stand Up,” 35.5 million people in the country Stood Up and the “I Vote for MDGs” campaign, a survey on the issues voters believe should be prioritized by the 2010 Presidential candidates, was launched.
  
  In Nepal the President read a Stand Up Pledge with members of the Constituent assembly at an event broadcast live on national television, followed by a concert in a large open-air theatre in the heart of Kathmandu.
  In the United States, the Irish band U2 brought 50,000 concertgoers to their feet for a "Stand Up” moment during their October 18 concert in Norman, Oklahoma.
  
  From Cape Town to Cairo and from Accra to Kampala, millions of Africans stood up in churches, mosques, schools, markets, streets and work places to call on their leaders to end poverty and inequality. In Uganda, the Local Government Association joined “Stand Up” by launching a historic award to honor the best-performing local government. The inaugural award was presented to the Kasese District.
  
  In South Africa, housemates on the hit television show “Big Brother” made passionate appeals to world leaders to end poverty and led the continent in reading the ”Stand Up” pledge, collected food for disadvantaged children and wrote a song on poverty. They called on African leaders to stop maternal death, end hunger and address climate change.
  
  In Nigeria, legendary African artist Femi Kuti led over 60,000 people attending the annual event commemorating the life of his late father Fela Kuti, in pledging their commitment to campaigning fervently against poverty and injustice. Femi urged participants at the festival to be bold when holding their governments accountable, noting that Africa has enough resources to end poverty. Accusing African leaders of mismanaging public resources through corruption and poor governance, he called on them to focus more attention on programs leading to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
  
  At Federation Square, Melbourne, a concert organized by Make Poverty History Australia and AusAID included a flash mob stunt and performances by entertainers including Diafrix, a musical group of African refugees.
  Citizens of Papua New Guinea Stood Up for the first time this year, in churches and government buildings, with support from the government Department of Community Development.
  
  In Halifax, Canada, citizens marched against poverty in a rally organized by Make Poverty History.
  In Italy, more than 400,000 people participated in 200 sports events across the country. The people of L’Aquila, which was hit by a devastating earthquake in April, ran a marathon to show their support.
  In Paris, the streets were invaded by 4,000 roller-bladers on Sunday proudly sporting ‘Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!’ t-shirts.
  
  In Spain, coordinated marches nationwide included a rally in Madrid on October 16 which was followed by an outdoor concert featuring Spanish rock bands.
  
  Peru was one of several countries which used “Stand Up” to start a process of climate justice hearings aimed at gathering the testimonies of people whose lives and livelihoods are being destroyed by global warming.
  
  “Stand Up” was also supported by the entire United Nations system, with events organized by United Nations Information Centers (UNICs) across the globe. In Egypt, for example, 25 million worshippers Stood Up in mosques, more than 2 million worshippers Stood Up in Coptic Orthodox churches and thousands more Stood Up in schools across the country, in a mobilization organized by the UNIC in Egypt.
  
  Hundreds of people gathered on October 16 at the International Labor Organisation (ILO) headquarters in Geneva to Stand Up Against Poverty in a joint action with UNDP and UN agencies, led by ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.

  London, Tuesday, 13 October 2009:- Today, it was announced that St Paul’s Cathedral will join the West End’s Oxford Street and Regent Street on November 3 as the third location celebrating the launch of Disney’s A Christmas Carol creating the biggest most dazzling start to the festive season that London has ever seen.
  
  The stars of Disney’s A Christmas Carol will illuminate London, getting the capital’s biggest ever festive season off to a glittering start ahead of the World Premiere in Leicester Square.
  Bob Hoskins will get the festivities underway in the very heart of Dickens’ London, at
  St Paul’s Cathedral, Colin Firth will push the button to light up Regent Street, and Jim Carrey will light up Oxford Street. Further announcements will follow about additional stars from music and theatre who will take part in the dazzling celebrations.
  
  As part of the evening’s festivities, St Paul’s Cathedral Choir will perform, joining London in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest ever Christmas Carol sing-a-long. From tomorrow, people can vote at www.londonschristmascarol.com for their favourite Christmas Carol to be performed on the night. Once the votes are counted, and the crowds are gathered across London for the World Premiere and the Christmas lights celebration, the choir will join the capital in song as the record attempt begins.
  
  The inclusion of St Paul’s Cathedral as the City of London location ensures that the capital’s festivities embrace the very heart of Dickens’ London. The City’s streets and alleyways are home to many of the buildings that Dickens would have known and which are referenced in his works, including A Christmas Carol, which, in 1843 helped re-define the Christmas period as the festive season of goodwill to all and re-popularised Christmas amongst the people. In the weeks following the start of the dazzling Christmas celebrations, a large number of events have been programmed by the City’s venues to tie in with this traditional festive theme and with Dickens’ work.
  
  The City event is sponsored by the City of London Corporation and the Cheapside Initiative, a partnership representing the vibrant Cheapside area. Once one of London’s great shopping districts, it is set to rediscover its glory days of old when building developments including One New Change are completed later next year.

  ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL CHOIR
  There has been a choir of boys and gentlemen at St Paul's Cathedral for over nine centuries. The earliest records date from 1127, when the Bishop of London, Richard de Belmeis, founded what was the first choir school and made provision for 'almonry' boys to serve the Cathedral.
  
  The present Cathedral Choir consists of 30 choristers (boy trebles), eight probationers (who will become choristers) and 12 professional adult singers (or Vicars Choral): four altos, four tenors and four basses.
  
  St Paul’s Cathedral Choir has established itself as one of the major forces in British church music today. The choristers rehearse every day for their busy workload; which may be a Sung Evensong or the chance to sing before HM The Queen at a special service. Situated at the east end of the cathedral, the school combines its musical heritage with a pursuit of academic excellence.
  
  ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL - A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
  A Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has overlooked the City of London since 604AD, a constant reminder to this great commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life.
  
  The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its architectural and artistic importance reflect the determination of the five monarchs who oversaw its building that London’s leading church should be as beautiful and imposing as their private palaces.
  
  As the Cathedral of the capital city, St Paul’s is the spiritual focus for the Nation. This is where people and events of overwhelming importance to the country have been celebrated, mourned and commemorated since the first Service took place in 1697. Since then important services have included the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill; Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, King George V; peace services marking the end of the First and Second World Wars; the launch of the Festival of Britain; the Service of Remembrance and Commemoration for the 11th September 2001: the 80th and 100th birthdays of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer and the Thanksgiving for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.
  
  Throughout, St Paul’s has remained a busy, working church where millions have come to worship and find peace.   ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL – FACTS AND FIGURES
  • St Paul’s is the only Cathedral to have been designed, built and completed by a single architect. It took 35 years to build, from 1675–1710.
  • The present St Paul’s is the fourth to occupy the site on Ludgate Hill; the first Cathedral dedicated to St Paul was built in 604 AD.
  • St Paul’s actually has three domes: an inner dome, a brick cone that supports the lantern, and the outer dome ‘skin’. The inner dome is 225ft high with a diameter of 102 ft. The whole structure weighs 64,000 tonnes.
  • The golden ball on the top of the dome is six feet in diameter, with room inside for ten people. The golden cross on top of the dome is 355.5ft from the ground.
  • The crypt of St Paul’s is the largest in Western Europe, and unusually for a Cathedral, is the exact ‘footprint’ of the Cathedral floor.
  • St Paul’s was the venue for some of the nation’s grandest funerals, including Admiral Lord Nelson (1806), Arthur, Duke of Wellington (1852) and Sir Winston Churchill (1965).
  • The Crypt is the final resting place for many famous names including Nelson, Wellington, Joseph Turner and Sir Alexander Fleming.
  • Sir Christopher Wren is also buried here, in a very plain grave. On the wall at the head of his tomb is a plain inscription, in Latin, arranged by his son. It translates as If you seek his monument, look around you. Wren himself had not wanted a memorial at all.
  • John Donne, a Dean of St Paul's, was buried in the crypt in 1631. His is the only monument from 'old St Paul's' to survive the Great Fire of London. Scorch marks can still be seen on the urn on which his statue is standing.
  • In 1964 human rights campaigner Martin Luther King preached at St Paul’s on his way to Oslo to collect the Nobel Peace Prize.

  Nothing could stop visitors to SkyFest in Edinburgh from breaking and setting two new world records – not even the dreich Scottish weather.
  
  Ah, you have to love the Scottish summer: wind, rain, near-freezing temperatures… it’s all part of the traditional Scots welcome. And it was in this Arctic-like environment that I found myself adjudicating two outdoors records.
  
  Being a Scot myself, the weather had no effect; nor indeed did it affect the thousands of guests at SkyFest – a giant carnival party thrown for all Sky TV workers and their families at the Highland Centre near the Scottish capital, Edinbugh. As part of the fun – along with carnival rides, coconut shies and the chance to meet Spongebob Squarepants – two mass participation world records were attempted: largest air guitar ensemble and largest rendition of "If You’re Happy And You Know It".
  
  First up, on the Saturday, 5 September 2009, was the air guitar ensemble. Former UK champion, The Midnight Moses, was on hand to demonstrate the kind of moves that make one an air guitar world champion. Then the music began – Survivor and “Eye of the Tiger”, the perfect choice for big power chords, and one of those songs that make you automatically air-guitar, no matter what you’re doing at the time! Or how wet you are.
  
  Result: After a few disqualifications for poor effort, a total of 1,535 people set a new Guinness World Record!
  
  Day two was the largest rendition of the repetitive playground song “If You’re Happy and You Know It…” The rain was coming down in sheets now, which at least helped to cover up the smell of the cows and pigs that blanketed the stage area. The crowd wasn't quite as large as the day before, but because this was a new feat, we needed just the minimum of 200 people to secure the record.
  
  A simple song, it didn’t take the SkyFest audience long to master the words and moves. The backing track lasted five minutes – the pre-requisite length, as per the guidelines – so all it took to secure this new world record was putting the two together.
  
  Once underway, it became apparent that the words on the tape didn’t quite match the words on the song sheet, but the singers ploughed on regardless, sticking to their words and singing over the top of the recorded music. So, yes, at a couple of points it sounded awful, but we got there in the end!
  
  Result: A grand total of 755 singers and a second Guinness World Record for SkyFest.

Largest painting by numbers

  On 30 September 2009, 960 students from Mingren Primary School in Tongliao, China, set a new Guinness World Records™ record for completing the largest painting by numbers. The final painting measured 2,461.3 m² ( 26,493.11 ft²), breaking the previous record of 2,386.98 m² (25693.14 ft²) set just three days earlier by volunteers at an event organized by the Giant Panda Culture and Industry Development Company Ltd at the Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan, China.
  
  The latest attempt was organized to celebrate the 60th anniversary of People’s Republic of China on 1 October 2009. The painting depicted a map of China, as the participants wanted to show their love of their motherland on its anniversary. The attempt was very well organized and it took the participants little more than one hour to complete the painting. The students participating were very happy that they could be part of such a big celebration event. Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Angela Wu (below, left) officiated at the event and awarded the certificate to the organizers in recognition of this achievement.
