Although I was taking a break in Paraguay – home of the most indisciplined football match with 20 red cards and Jose Luis Chilavert record holder for the most goals scored by a goalkeeper in one game when he bagged a hat trick of penalties - for the first two weeks of September the world records have not stopped coming. Check out below what was broken this month!
September records
The US Open saw Kim Clijsters return to Grand Slam action with devastating effect as she beat everybody in her path including both the Williams sisters to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong in 1980. While that may not have been a record, the 6ft 6in (198 cm) Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro was a record-breaker as he beat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on his way to becoming the tallest tennis player to win a Grand Slam. There was another record at the US Open for Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama who bowed out in the first round. It was notable because this was her 62nd straight appearance at a Grand Slam the most Grand Slam singles tournaments played consecutively.
In Rugby Union South Africa won their third Tri-Nations title comfortably with Morne Steyn scoring a total of 95 points. However Dan Carter (below) scored 51 points himself to extend his record for the most points scored in a Tri-Nations career to 363 points.
Finally this month… Joe Calzaghe may have retired from boxing last year but Guinness World Records had been waiting for a chance to meet him to present him with a certificate for his record that is featured in this year’s edition of the Guinness World Records book. On 23 September adjudicators Amarilis Espinoza, Mariamarta Ruano-Graham and myself met Joe on The Paul O’Grady Show to give him his certificate (pictured below) for the most consecutive defences of a World super-middleweight boxing title.
What’s coming up in October?
There is plenty of sport coming up this month and on the 10th is the Super League Grand Final with Leeds Rhinos still in the running to win their third consecutive super league title which would be the most consecutive super league titles. Rhinos centre Keith Senior (below) scored yet another try last month, with 179 tries he has scored the most tries in the Super League.
In cricket the sixth ICC Champions Trophy is already underway with the final taking place on 5 October. A different team has won each tournament although hosts South Africa are favourites to win the trophy for the second time to set the record for the most wins of the ICC Champions Trophy. South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis also has an eye on an individual record, after scoring 36 runs in the opening match he is just 54 runs short of overhauling Chris Gayle’s (pictured wearing his favourite sunglasses) 695 runs in the tournament the most runs scored in the ICC Champions Trophy.
What you did this month!!
Well done to everybody who set a new Guinness World Records record last month. Check out two of our record breakers videos below.

The furthest distance static cycling in one minute is 2,040 metres (1.27 miles) and was achieved by Miguel Angel Castro (Spain), in Villa de Arafo, Tenerife, Spain, on 26 August 2009.
Esporta, the premium UK health club operator, has established a new record for the largest spinning event on static bikes. The attempt involved 323 Esporta employees cycling simultaneously in an organized class, and took place on 28 February 2008 at the company’s annual conference, held at the spectacular Concept Centre in Bedford, UK.
Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Kristian Teufel was present at the event to invigilate the spinning class and certify the new record.
Esporta’s CEO, Glenn Timms, who led the class together with fitness instructor Winston Stephenson, commented: “Spinning is very popular among the 3,500 classes that are organized each week in Esporta’s 55 clubs across the UK – its high-tempo, instructor-led classroom format creates a very conducive environment to help people get the most out of their workout. We are delighted to have established this record, which is a demonstration of our drive to encourage all our employees to ‘live the dream’, regularly experiencing and replicating the benefits that our members enjoy participating in group exercise classes.”

On 19 January 2008, Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Marco Frigatti had the pleasure of certifying the record for the longest distance on static cycles covered in 24 hours by a team. The New York Sports Clubs/Cadence Cycling Team – consisting of Tucker Brown, Chad Butts, Holden Comeau, Mikael Hanson, Thomas Wood (all USA) and Stefan Kusurelis (Germany) – performed this record attempt as part of the “Saints and Spinners Event” at Grand Central Terminal in New York City, USA. The final distance covered on the spinning bike was 1,335.5 km (829.84 miles), which means that the team cycled at an average pace of 55.65 km/h (or 34.58 mph)!
The event, which took place from 7 a.m. on 18 January through to 7 a.m. the next day, was a great success both for the organizers and the team members. Most importantly, it raised over $250,000 (£127,275) for HealthCorps, a non-profit organization founded by Dr Mehmet Oz, the health expert from The Oprah Winfrey Show, who is devoted to fighting obesity among teenagers. On top of this fantastic achievement, the six cyclists also managed one more achievement by challenging each other to break the record for the longest distance covered on a static cycle by an individual in an hour – which they broke three times! Both records were set using a Star Trac NXT spin bike.
Merrill Richmond, Vice-President of Marketing for the New York Sports Clubs, commented: “Our members set personal records every day, but today’s achievement is truly historic.”
