Although I was taking a break in Paraguay – home of the most indisciplined football match with 20 red cards and  Jose Luis Chilavert record holder for the most goals scored by a goalkeeper in one game when he bagged a hat trick of penalties -  for the first two weeks of September the world records have not stopped coming. Check out below what was broken this month!

      September records

The US Open saw Kim Clijsters return to Grand Slam action with devastating effect as she beat everybody in her path including both the Williams sisters to become the first mother to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong in 1980. While that may not have been a record, the 6ft 6in (198 cm) Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro was a record-breaker as he beat  both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on his way to becoming the tallest tennis player to win a Grand Slam. There was another record at the US Open for Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama who bowed out in the first round. It was notable because this was her 62nd straight appearance at a Grand Slam the most Grand Slam singles tournaments played consecutively.

In Rugby Union South Africa won their third Tri-Nations title comfortably with Morne Steyn scoring a total of 95 points. However Dan Carter (below) scored 51 points himself to extend his record for the most points scored in a Tri-Nations career to 363 points.

Finally this month… Joe Calzaghe may have retired from boxing last year but Guinness World Records had been waiting for a  chance to meet him to present him with a certificate for his record  that is featured in this year’s edition of the Guinness World Records book. On 23 September adjudicators Amarilis Espinoza, Mariamarta Ruano-Graham and myself met Joe on The Paul O’Grady Show to give him his certificate (pictured below) for the most consecutive defences of a World super-middleweight boxing title.

      What’s coming up in October?

There is plenty of sport coming up this month and on the 10th is the Super League Grand Final with Leeds Rhinos still in the running to win their third consecutive super league title which would be the most consecutive super league titles. Rhinos centre Keith Senior (below) scored yet another try last month, with 179 tries he has scored the most tries in the Super League.

In cricket the sixth ICC Champions Trophy is already underway with the final taking place on 5 October. A different team has won each tournament although hosts South Africa are favourites to win the trophy for the second time to set the record for the most wins of the ICC Champions Trophy. South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis also has an eye on an individual record, after scoring 36 runs in the opening match he is just 54 runs short of overhauling Chris Gayle’s (pictured wearing his favourite sunglasses) 695 runs in the tournament the most runs scored in the ICC Champions Trophy.

      What you did this month!!

Well done to everybody who set a new Guinness World Records record last month. Check out two of our record breakers videos below.

Justin Kittredge shows NBA star Chauncey Billups how it’s done when he smashes his record for the most blindfolded free throws in one minute. Billups previous record of five was equalled in 30 seconds and then Justin sank 11 consecutive free throws to put the record at an amazing 16!

Miguel Angel Castro sets a brand new record for the furthest distance static cycling in one minute he managed 2,040 metres (1.27 miles) which equates to an incredible average speed of 122.4 kilometres per hour (76.06 mph)!!

  • Largest parade of automatic mo

    • From: GWR_Ralph
    • Description:

Thailand sells herself as the “Land of Smiles”, but she could just as well be the “Land of World Records”. In 2009 alone, the south-east Asian nation has given Guinness World Records™ the tallest girl, the largest aqua-aerobics display (both adjudicated) and somewhat stranger records, such as the longest duration living with scorpions (a frightening 33 days). Even Thailand’s most revered figure is in on the act. On 9 June 2009, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) celeberated 63 years since his coronation; he is the longest-reigning monarch alive.

Thai Yahama Motor Co., Ltd, followed the record-breaking trend on 8 August 2009 when they invited Guinness World Records Adjudicator Ralph Hannah to Nakorn Nayok province for an attempt to set the new record for the largest parade of automatic motorcycles. Automatic motorcycles have become incredibly popular with Thai teenagers, both because they are easy to use and for their stylish designs. The Yamaha Fino is arguably the most popular model in Thailand and this record attempt was organized specifically for Fino enthusiasts, who travelled from all over the country to attend the event.

      Picture 037.jpg

The Guinness World Records guidelines state that the parade must extend for at least 3.2 km (2 miles) and there can be no significant gaps between each participating motorcycle. This parade was over 5 km (3.1 miles), long with the finish point being the picturesque Khun Dan Prakarnchon Dam. Ralph counted all the motorcycles as they finished the parade and ensured there were no significant gaps between them. Despite the rainy conditions – it is currently monsoon season in Thailand – exactly 2,474 Yamaha Finos took part in the parade, which was more than enough to set a new Guinness World Records record!

      Picture 031.jpg

At the Fino rainy music festival, organized for all the parade participants and other Fino fans later that evening, Ralph presented the certificate to all the top management at Thai Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, who after several months of hard work and organization had realized their dream of a new Guinness World Records achievement: the largest parade of automatic motorcycles.

  • FAREWELL TO X GAMES 15

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

All most excellent things come to an end and so it is with a bag full of great memories that we say good bye to X Games for another year...but what a show it was!

      X Games 15 photos 001.jpg

Guinness World Records was there for everyone who chose to step up and take up the challenge of trying to get into the record book and we thank everyone who took part.  From athletes, to all the visitors to the Guinness World Records Skate Park and BMX Park.  To all those who stopped by to win a book or pick up a goodie bag, a big thumbs up to everybody who made it all so memorable.

We cannot leave however before mentioning a young man who chose to come to the booth and have a go at the Guinness World Record for most kicks to one's own head.  Yes, you read correctly.  The record for most kicks to one's own head in one minute is 77 and this young man decided he wanted to see if he could break it.  So right there, in the hot Californian sun, in the middle of X Fest and in front of our Editor Craig Glenday he gave it his best.  To say it was a crowd stopper is to say the least but as the seconds ticked away, the young man furiously kicked himself again and again in the head.  The clock stopped.  He stopped.  The result?  77 kicks made equalling the current Guinness World Record!!  As you can see below the young man was thrilled he had made his way into our book and was forever a part of superlative history - good on you sir!

      X Games 15 001.jpg

Halfway through the day I thought to myself that if there was ever going to be a day that I would ride a skateboard it was going to be at the X Games so I grabbed Craig and proceed to the Skate Park.  After a bit of huffing and puffing as well as some pieces of duct tape (don't ask) we were both suited and booted to hit the...er...concrete.  It seemed to last an eternity but we gave it our best and for 10 minutes Craig and I enjoyed the thrills and spills of riding a skateboard for the very first time.  We were both excellent I have to say, up until the point where my skateboard crashed into Craig's as he was just about to launch himself into an amazing sequence of 360-mctwists-double-ketchup-swifty-fakies.  Oh!  How we are more in awe now of all the young boys and girls who seem to ride these little boards with four wheels with such grace!

      Gnarly Craig & Stuart.jpg

An impromptu Guinness World Record attempt also took place at the Mattel Fingerboard booth in which if you sent a message to a particular number you received an X Games 15 fingerboard.  They wanted to go for the most people simultaneously texting.  After some rallying from the MC, around 37 texters turned up and pressed "Send" all at the same time.  Not a big number but good enough to start the record off...I wonder how many will there be the next time it's attempted?

      X Games 15

And that was that.  The hot sun, the crowds, the amazing level of athletes, the sights and sounds (and smells!) of X Games 15 gradually faded away and we were left to put away our booth in the quiet Los Angeles sunshine.  What a fantastic event it was.  Many thanks not only to all the X Games staff who were there but also GWR's own Laura, Michael, David, Paul, Dan and of course Craig (sadly missing from the photo above) who gave it their all this year and helped to make it one of the most memorable years for Guinness World Records at X Games ever!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY X GAMES!  HERE'S TO ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING 15 YEARS!!

  • Longest time controlling a foo

    • Description:

On Wednesday, 30 April 2008, Dan Magness from the United Kingdom achieved the record for the longest time controlling a football on the back. He smashed the previous record of 27.7 seconds, achieving an impressive 2 min, 31 sec, during which he bounced the ball 100 times using his back. The event took place at the WOW Hotel and Conference centre in Istanbul, Turkey, and was the grand finale to the Bank Asya press launch for the sponsorship of 1.Lig Turkish football.

Dan Magness is a football freestyler with an array of dazzling skills – he controls the ball as if it were part of his body, making the most difficult of tricks look simple.

      IMG_1127.jpg
The event was attended by Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Aadil Ahmed, as well as many members of the Turkish media. It attracted a great deal of interest, as football has a vast following in Turkey.

      IMG_1160.jpg
Dan was thrilled at his Guinness World Records achievement, and looks forward to attempting many more football-related records in the near future.
