  • A Look Back at 2009...Part Two A Look Back at 2009...Part Two

    • Description:

Now into the second half of 2009 the mad, mad, mad, mad, mad world of Guinness World Records continued...off we go!

      JULY

The month of July found us congregating in California for X Games 15 where we sponsor the BMX and Skate Parks.  In a world of ollies, backside grinds, heelflips and shove-its there's truly nothing better than being there in person and watching it all happen.  Every dog has its day and that is truly the case when it comes to Tillman, an English bulldog who on July 30th set the Guinness World Record for the fastest 100 m by a dog on skateboard in an amazing 19.67 sec.  Talk about mad dogs and Englishmen out in the midday sun - superb!

And while we're on the subject of sport how could we not mention the most expensive soccer player transfer fee?  On July 1st Cristiano Ronaldo was transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid for a reported 80 million Euros ($131.86 millon)...un-be-liev-a-ble.  To put that in perspective, according to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Madrid paid for Ronaldo 57 times his weight in gold!  I wonder how much I'm worth in gold?  Now there's a thought...or not.

      93894349.jpg

But when it comes to athleticism, please stand aside for Diesel, a London-based guinea pig who broke the record for the longest jump by a guinea pig.  On July 27th Diesel (by name and by nature!) cleared a gap of 20.5 cm (8.07 in) crowning himself champion guinea pig jumper in the process.  Apparently Diesel is worth around $20...no interest from Real Madrid so far!

      AUGUST

In August after experiencing the wonder of watching Usain Bolt break the world records for the 100 and 200 meters what was left we asked ourselves?

116857-fastest time to eat and peel a lemon.jpg

Well we have our very own not-so-secret weapon at Guinness World Records and he goes by the name of Ashrita Furman.  Furman holds more Guinness World Records than any other human being with over 100 to his name.  He added to his tally on August 22nd though when he broke the record for the fastest time to peel and eat a lemon which he did in 9.84 seconds at the Panorama Cafe in New York!

      GWR Mariachi 010.jpg

In Mexico, not to be outdone by Furman's prodigious peeling-and-eating, they set about trying to break the record for the most mariachis playing simultaneously.  Ay mama!  Indeed, on the appointed day (August 29th) 549 mariacheros gathered in Guadalajara and played for the regulation 10 minutes.  Viva Mexico!

116981-most straws stuffed in the mouth.JPG

A classic record which we hadn't seen for some time was the timeless most straws in the mouth.  Indeed.  On August 6th Simon Elmore from Germany held 400 straws in his mouth for 10 seconds and forever placed his name in the annals of Guinness World Records!

      SEPTEMBER

As the days got shorter and evenings darkened usually outdoor activity slackens off but it didn't seem so at Guinness World Records headquarters as this was in fact our most important month.  On September 17th we launched our wonderful new Guinness World Records book put together by our most diligent and unstoppable editorial team - salud!GWR080909-077.jpg

A colder month than previous it was time to put the gloves on perhaps and take care of keeping oneself warm.  Someone who took this to extremes was 10-year-old Tiano Walton who on September 13th thought one glove wasn't enough.  No.  In fact she need 27 of them.  On one hand.  But why?  Because she clutched herself into the Guinness World Records book for the most gloves worn on one hand.  I wonder what she would do with the most socks on one foot record?

117462-most gloves worn on one hand.JPG

You know that thing some people do with their pen?  You know, spin it on their hand, sometimes annoyingly?  Well, there's even a Guinness World Record for that.  On September 12th Daniel Muß decided to go for it.  A member of the pen-spinning community in his native Germany (really) he broke the record for the most pen spinning fingerpasses with 66 completed spins.  I don't know what to say other than than that's brilliant.

      Mets Misc 058.jpg

I found myself on Jimmy Kimmel in September as ol' Kimmel wanted to break the record for the largest meatball.  I mean, why not??  Yes, on a warm Californian night on September 24th two men lifted a large round meaty object into the record book.  How meaty?  198 lb meaty, that's how much.  Congratulations to Jimmy Kimmel and his crew, you're in the book!  Again!

      OCTOBER

From the large and meaty to the light and delicate and to Japan we go again.  A marvelous thing happened on October 10th in Uruma when 1,808 butterflies were released simultaneously in a successful attempt to break the record for largest butterfly release.  Almost one thousand people stood in a single line with a butterfly in each hand and released them simultaneously at a given signal.  Aaaaaahhhh...

      117009 -Longest marathon playing baseball.JPG

As the MLB entered its post season and the Yankees took the championship what better way to celebrate their achievement than by playing that longest baseball game ever.  That's exactly what happened in Missouri from October 9-11 when the Jonny G Foundation Cardinals played against the Edward Jones Browns for a ridiculous 48 hr 9 min 27 sec.  What???

The victors presumably must have celebrated in style and for sure there must have been alot of high fives and chest bumps.  But not as many as there were on October 27 in Australia when there was an attempt on the record for the most people doing chest bumps with a heart thumping 446 people completing 223 chestbumps - oh yeah!

      NOVEMBER

November is another special month for us as we celebrate Guinness World Records Day all over the world.  This year was bigger than ever with over 40 record attempts in over 20 countries - many thanks once again to all who participated!

117564 -Fastest Time To Eat A Bowl Of Pasta 2.JPG

My personal favorites from the day as well as the rest of the month include the fastest time to eat a bowl of pasta achieved by Ernesto Cesario (Italy) in 1 minute 30 seconds in Milan on November 12th (bon apetito!), the largest finger painting in Hong Kong measuring 2101.43 sq m (22,619.51 sq ft) achieved by 3,242 students on November 26th, the longest hand-rolled cigar measuring 196 ft 3 in which I went to judge in Florida on November 21st and the tallest dog which as of November 12th is Titan owned by Diane Taylor who stands 42.25 inches tall - congratulations to the big man and to all our November record-breakers!

      DECEMBER

And so the year drew to a close and what a year it was.  Here we are a day away from the end of a momentous 120 months and the record-breaking still does not stop.

December 5th saw us recognize the largest Christmas tree structure in Mexico City measuring 110 m 35 cm (362 ft tall) with a diameter of 35 m (114 ft 9 in), with a star which was 32.5 m tall.  It weighed 330 tonnes and was adorned with 1,200,000 lights.  I wonder what Father Christmas would think of that?

      84115414.jpg

It is at this time of year that if you're not like me you actually send some letters out in the form of Chrsitmas cards.  Sometimes these make it, sometimes they're a little late but the one letter you would want to make sure did arrive was one which was auctioned in New York and sold for $3,200,000 (£1,900,000) on December 5th.  The letter itself was written by George Washington in 1787 to his nephew Bushrod Washington, urging adoption of the country's new constitution.  Little did he know that would also be the most expensive single letter sold at auction over 200 years later!

As social media took a grip on the world in the late 2000s it invariably led to some Guinness World Records and so what better way to end the year than on this note.  On December 1st via Twitter the Guinness World Record was established for the Largest Tweetup with 1,149 people who all congregated in one place via a message on Twitter in Los Angeles, California.  From the old to the new in one single month...pretty much sums up Guinness World Records!

I hope you've enjoyed this little retrospective of 2009 and some of my own personal favorites.  It was quite a year and I'm sure I've left some gems out but they will be written about at another time.  They all provided me with some great memories for sure.  Many thanks to all who took part in 2009 and made the world of superlatives grow a little bit bigger.  Keep coming back to this blog and our website for all your record-breaking news and updates - we wouldn't be here without you!

      HAPPY NEW YEAR!

And so the festive season marches on to the end of the decade...

The presents have been opened, the Christmas tree taken down and grandpa's teeth have been found under the cat.

Well, well, well, what a year it has been.  Not only do we march on relentlessly to the end of 2009 but to the end of the 21st century's first decade.  What will it bring we wonder?  How many records will be broken in 2010?  Will we discover an even taller man than the world's tallest man?  Will the shortest man be pipped at the post?  How old will the oldest person be at the end of 2010?  Lots of questions indeed but what better way to prepare for the next 365 days than by looking back over the last year and remembering all those record breakers and record-breaking moments that stood out and forced us to recognize the best of the best.

So here you are, a few of my own personal favourites of 2009 as we hop, skip and jump through the last 12 months.

      Let's go!

      JANUARY

As the winter months of 2008 drew to a close and new year opened who would have known that it would be with a bang with the fastest shot in National Hockey League (NHL) being recorded.  Slovakian Zdeno Chara hit a 105.4 mph (169.7 km/h) slap shot during the All-Star Game's Skills Competition in Montreal, Canada, on January 25th blasting his way into the record books.

      95464315.jpg

The winter theme continued it seemed when Canadians Ray Zahab, Kevin Vallely and Richard Weber travelled from the Hercules Inlet to the South Pole in just 33 days 23 hr 30 min arriving on January 7th recording the fastest unsupported and unassisted journey to the Pole by a team - ridiculous!  These are epic journeys by far and we salute all who venture out into the unknown for the sake of pushing the limits.

And one man who really knows a thing or two about pushing the limits is 10-year-old Luke G. Cimino who on January 16th found himself in the book for wearing the most socks on one foot - and he didn't even travel to the South Pole!  At Lionville Elementary School, Downingtown, Pennsylvania, USA young Luke put on 102 socks on a single foot!  Are you kidding me??

114632-most socks worn on one foot.JPG

Zdeno, Ray, Kevin, Richard and Luke - thank you for kicking off the year in style!

      FEBRUARY

The pace didn't slacken in February and with the second month of the year came the NBA All-Star Game and that means...more records being broken.

      021409 EastWestPrac JM012.JPG

Chauncey Billups knows a thing or two about this as he equalled the record for the most blinded free throws in one minute in Phoenix, Arizona.  As blind as a bat Billups put four through the hoop but not after that biggest of big men Shaquille O'Neal made his own attempt.  Sadly he only made one...or was it two?  Better luck next time Mr. O'Neal...see you in Dallas!

February saw the launch of our Gamer's Edition, a book collating all videogame records and what better way to do this than by setting a record.  Enter Danny Johnson, Guitar Hero extraordinaire.  Young Danny broke the record for highest score on a single song of Guitar Hero earning 973,954 points while playing 'Through the Fire and Flames'.  I was there.  I watched him do it and BOY can that kid play!

      84623934[1].jpg

From the young to the old and we gladly, but also with a little sadness recognized a new oldest person in the world.  It's always a little sad because you know it means someone has passed away ...R.I.P....but nevertheless on February 27th we notified Gertrude Baines (b. 6 April 1894, USA) she was the oldest person in the world at 114 years 327 days old.  Wow.  And I'm feeling my age at 38 - yikes!

      IMG_3306.jpg

      MARCH

One thing you won't find Gertrude doing is diving into very shallow puddles of water from great heights but that is exactly what a gentleman who calls himself Professor Splash does.  Indeed PS also known as...er...Darren Taylor...dove 10.87 m (35 ft 8 in) into six inches of water on March 20 breaking the record for the highest shallow dive as we call it.  Catch me doing that?  Not on your nelly!

Darren Taylor - Highest Shallow Dive 2.jpg

Darren Taylor - Highest Shallow Dive.jpg

After that you really would need a stiff drink.  Or two.  Or maybe even three.  At least go drinking with a few mates for a while.  Perhaps even a pub crawl.  But wait.  Not any ordinary pub crawl.  How about the largest pub crawl in the world?  On March 14 3,163 people set a new record for the most people on a pub crawl during the SaintPattys.com 11th Annual Luck of The Irish St Patricks Pub Crawl 2009 in New York.  Good Lord!!  What a craic!

      114594-most people on a pub crawl 2.JPG

After that much drinking I would definitely do something silly.  But not as silly as what Kevin Velaiden did on March 27 which was jump into a pair of underpants in one hour as many times as he could.  234 times!!!  And not only that but on our TV show in the UK Guinness World Records Smashed.  Kevin!  Have you no pride man??  Just joking my friend.  You are a star in the Guinness World Records constellation - bravo!

      APRIL

Oh April!  Oh April!  Whatever will you bring?  I think after March we really need a bit of divine intervention and what better place to get that than in London on April 9th when in a very Monty Python way there gathered the most people dressed as nuns - 250 people!  Fortes fortuna iuvat!

      85615120.jpg

And as we reach for the heavens let us not forget our friends the spacemen who live up there in the sky!  I really didn't know how to link this bit together as you can see.  But we had people exploring the South Pole and we had people visiting space...for the second time!  While people were dressing up as nuns in London Hungarian-born US-software billionaire Charles Simonyi was returning from space. Simonyi paid $25m (then £12.5 million) for his first trip on a Russian Soyuz rocket on 7 April 2007, the first stage of a 12-day visit to the International Space Station (ISS). Two years later, at the age of 60, Simonyi paid $35m (£24m) for a second voyage, also to the ISS, departing on 26 March 2009, returning to Earth on April 9 2009.  Mr. Simonyi sir you are the recipient of the Guinness World Record for most visits into space by a tourist...wanna do it again?

      115269-longest time flying a paper aircraft.JPG

Someone who knows a thing or two about flight is Takuo Toda, the chairman of the Japan Origami Airplane Association.  Takuo Toda San is responsible for the longest flight duration record for a hand-launched paper aircraft, launching his plane for 27.9 sec on April 11th.  Isn't that cool?  I love the 'simple' ones...they're the best.

      MAY

May means it's the fifth month of the year and we're close to half way through.  I hope you'll agree, so far the year was pretty wild.  Whatever next?  The largest hamburger in the world?  The thickest book?  The highest pancake toss?

      Yes! Yes! Yes!

The largest commercially available hamburger is 84.14 kg (185.8 lbs) and is available for US$499 (£302.84) on the menu at Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar in Southgate, Michigan, USA, as of May 30 2009.

      Largest hamburger commercially available 3.jpg

The thickest book measures 322 mm (12.67 in) in width and was unveiled by HarperCollins in London, UK, on May 20 2009. All Agatha Christie's Miss Marple stories - 12 novels and 20 short stories - are collected and published in this volume.

      115422 -thickest book.JPG

The highest pancake toss measured 7.77 m (25 ft 6 in) and was achieved by both Brent Bush and Gregg Zimmerman (both USA) outside Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Kansas, USA on May 20 2009. It took them three hours before they reached the record breaking height surpassing the record several times in the process.

      JUNE

Halfway through and the Guinness World Records world just keeps on going.  I mean people were really letting their hair down and we were only six months in.  Someone who most definitely was not letting their hair down was Stefan Srocka from Germany who we checked out on June 2nd when he submitted himself as a contender for the tallest mohican.  He came.  He submitted.  He conquered...with a mohawk measuring 80 cm (31.5 in).  Hair-raising.  Congrats Stefan!

      116439-tallest mohican.JPG

If that wasn't something to sing about, Karen Davy from New Zealand certainly had a reason to.  The lass from Auckland raised $27,000 for a children's charity by breaking the Guinness World Record for marathon karaoke singing.  A ear-splitting 48 hrs! Not really Karen, we're sure you sounded lovely...gulp!

      117302-tallest horse.JPG

Stop what you're doing right now!  Why?  Because you are about to be informed of a most intimidating record.  In the huge state of Texas everything is big.  And that includes horses.  In fact, the tallest living horse in the world is Remington, a Clydesdale horse, who on June 6th measured 20 hands (203.2 cm, 80 in) without shoes.  Giddy up I say!  Remington is owned by Cheryl Davis who I hope is also a very tall woman.  Well done Cheryl and well done Remington ya big fella!

Half way through the year and halfway through this wrap-up of my most memorable Guinness World Records of 2009...Part Two coming up!

      December sports blog

The record-breaking didn’t slow down for Christmas and this month we have young teams, old heroes, comebacks, new record holders, summer vaulting, winter jumping and a football throw in to put Rory Delap to shame! Check it all out below.

Your favourite sports record of the decade?

With only a few days until we start 2010, you can still vote for your top sports record of the decade! Whether it is the continuous dominance of a sport throughout the decade (Roger Federer and Lance Armstrong) or a brilliant year (New England Patriots going 16-0) or just an incredible moment (9.58 seconds to be exact) there is a selection of records to choose from and you can cast your vote right here!

      December records

Arsenal have developed a reputation under Arsene Wenger for giving opportunities to young players. As the London club had already qualified for the second phase of the Champions League the Frenchman lived up to that reputation in record-breaking fashion. Pictured below is the Arsenal team who took on Greek Champions Olympiacos on 9 December 2009, a.k.a the Champions League team with the youngest average age. The starting XI averaged out at just 20.9 years old – a whole 7 months younger on average than the Ajax class of 2003 (including a young Rafael Van De Vaart, Wesley Sneijder and Zlatan Ibrahimovic) who were the previous record holders.

      The youngest Champions League team

Last year Harlequins took on Leicester at Twickenham in front of 50,000 spectators the highest attendance for a Guinness Premiership Rugby Union match. This year Harlequins played Wasps at the same venue but went one better, or 26,716 better to be precise as 76,716 fans braved the cold on 27 December to watch a thrilling encounter that was just edged by Wasps by one point as they ran out 21-20 winners.

      Harlequins vs London Wasps

      What’s coming up in 2010!

2010 is a fascinating year for sport with plenty to get excited for – there is simply too much to hypothesise about in this blog but here is a selection of just some of the main events from the first half of the year and the records that we could see go…

In January Angola hosts the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time. Samuel Eto’o is already the all time top scorer in the competition with 16 goals but he will be looking to try and break Ndaye Mulamba’s 36 year old record of the most goals in a single Africa Cup of Nations. The Congolese forward and national hero (he is the one in the middle holding the shirt by the way) managed nine goals in the 1974 edition of the tournament and guided Zaire to their second and last Africa Cup of Nations championship.

      Ndaye Mulamba

February is the start of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The games have traditionally been dominated by Norway who has the most gold medals, 98, and the most medals overall with 280. It was also a Norwegian who managed the longest competitive ski jump with a mind-blowing 239 metres (784 feet) in Planica, Slovenia in 2005. Ok, ok so Bjorn Einar Romoren’s jump didn’t happen at a Winter Olympics but it was just an excuse to show this video again!

In March the new Formula One season begins and the ‘dream team’ of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton threaten to win the constructor’s championship for McLaren and maybe outscore the 262 points that Ferrari managed in 2004, the most points by a constructor in a Formula One season. However an ex-Ferrari driver might have something to say about that. Michael Schumacher is back racing for Mercedes GP (formerly Brawn GP) and is confident he can challenge for the title. If he did win then that would be an incredible eighth Formula One title to add to the record-breaking seven he already has.

      Michael SchumacherMichael Schumacher

The end of April and beginning of May sees the third edition of the ICC World Twenty20 arrive in the West Indies for two weeks of action-packed boundary-filled cricket. The 2009 World Twenty20 saw an incredible 173 sixes!!  While we are on the subject of maximums the most sixes in a Twenty20 international inning is 10 by Chris Gayle and back in the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup Yuvraj Singh of India managed six sixes in six balls against England – relive it again below!

In June the World Cup kicks off in Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa. Italy are defending champions and if the Azzurri, unbeaten in qualifying, are victorious in South Africa they would equal Brazil’s five trophies, the most wins of the FIFA football World Cup.

      World Cup 2006 Champions

On the other side of the coin the hosts will be desperately hoping to get out of a tough group to ensure they don’t suffer the ignominy of becoming the first host nation to be eliminated in the first round of a football World Cup.

      What you did this month!!

Well done to everybody who set a new Guinness World Records record in December here are a just a few highlights.

  • Most items auctioned in 24 hr Most items auctioned in 24 hr

    • From: gwr_aleks
    • Description:

On 4 December 2009 at precisely 14:30 the record attempt for the most items auctioned in 24 hours was started by the head auctioneer, Manuel Francisco da Nobrega Themudo Gallego (Portugal), of Oportunity Leilões . The aim  was  to beat the 592 items sold in 24 hours achieved on 14 June 2009 by Midfield Development Association in Swinford, Ireland. DSC05292.JPG
The venue was a converted warehouse with all of the items displayed across the available space for viewing  by potential bidders prior to the start of the auction. Many of the items on site represented works of art, paintings and sculptures of well known Portuguese artists, but there were  also a lot of unusual and very rare pieces which caught the eye of many  potential bidders. DSC05301.JPG
Mr. Gallego did not waste any precious time and with the aim of beating the record in 7-8 hours, started auctioning off the items in an incredible (and what seemed to me as superhuman talking speed!) pace.
Although the auction started off really well and the initial enthusiasm of bidders did not cool off, I knew we were all in for a long day. By the end of the first three hours of the auction I was already ready to give the organisers a different record, for providing me with what seemed to be the most comfortable chair in the world.
Many of the items proved to be popular with several bidders at once and it sometimes seemed that the price would go through the roof. DSC05303.JPG
After seven hours of continuous auctioning, and with no signs of  the pace slowing  down , Francisco Gallego auctioned off the last item at 21:30, setting the new Guinness World Records record at 600 items. The auctioned managed to take in over 550,000 EUR worth of sales during the attempt, which is an average of 917 EUR per item. What supposed to be a full 24 hour achievement turned into incredible 7 hour auction ‘sprint’. Judging on this performance I am sure Manuel Francisco can double this achievement in the near future!

Once again, congratulations to everyone at Oportunity Leilões!

    • Description:

The year is coming to a close and November saw the end of the Formula One, baseball, golf and tennis seasons amongst others. There were plenty of records across continents and in various different disciplines as always.

      November records

Arguably the fastest woman on the road is Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba, the 5,000 and 10,000 metre Olympic champion took to the streets of Nijmegen in the Netherlands and clocked the fastest road run 15 kilometres in just 46 min 28 sec.

      Tirunesh DibabaTirunesh Dibaba

One of the fastest men on the road (albeit with a motorbike) is certainly Valentino Rossi (Italy) who wrapped up his sixth Moto GP Championships in Valencia on 8 November 2009 the most Moto GP Championship titles. In all he managed six wins and 13 podium finishes from his 17 starts this season, another fantastic season for the 30 year old from Urbino.

      Valentino Rossi

Moving away from speed and towards longevity one of baseball’s oldest teams the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in the World Series. The victory on 4 November extended their record for most wins of World Series – they now have 27 – to go along with their record for the most American League pennants a staggering 40.

      New York Yankees

Veteran pitcher Andy Pettitte (pictured below) also set the record for the most wins in postseason during the World Series when he won his 18th game, his nearest rival is former Braves pitcher John Smoltz on 15 wins.  The records didn’t stop there for the Yankees though as Derek Jeter also extended his record for the most matches played in postseason - 138 and counting.

      Andy Pettitte

On 15 November the Philippines boxing legend (and presidential candidate) Manny Pacquiao beat Miguel Cotto (Puerto Rico) to secure the WBO welterweight title. Along with his that title he has also held sanctioned belts in four other weight divisions to equal Thomas Hearns record for the most boxing world titles in different weight divisions. He was WBC lightweight, WBC super featherweight, IBF super bantamweight and WBC flyweight champion since you ask.

      Manny Pacquiao

And finally windsurfing legend Björn Dunkerbeck was presented with an incredible six Guinness World Records certificates at an international sports awards ceremony on 27 November. Find out more from GWR adjudicator Carl Saville here.

      November “almost” records

Unfortunately Guinness World Records don’t do subjective but if we did this would probably be the worst miss ever.

And if we ever decide to have a record for the longest successful basketball shot….with an American football. Then LeBron will be the man to beat!

      What’s coming up in December?

The draw for football’s FIFA World Cup takes place on Friday 4th of December and more interested than most will be Thulani Ngcobo (below) of South Africa who won MTN’s Last Fan Standing competition. He now has tickets to see 38 games at next year’s tournament!! If he manages to sit through more than 20 games he will have set a new record for the most matches attended at a football FIFA World Cup by an individual. Sounds easy? I remember Switzerland versus Ukraine in 2006 – not sure I could sit through anything like that again!

      Thulani Ngcobo

The Davis Cup Final also gets underway on Friday 4th December with Spain taking on the Czech Republic. Spain has the record for the most ties in a single season when they had to play eight in 1965. Nowhere near such a marathon these days as they reached the final playing just three ties winning 11 of the 15 matches. In contrast Czech Republic won 10 of the 15.

      What you did this month!!

Well done to everybody who set a new Guinness World Records record last month here are a few highlights.

  • GWR Day: US Round Up! GWR Day: US Round Up!

    • From: gwr_day
    • Description:

The US left an indelible mark on the fifth annual GWR Day, with a total of nine records getting broken in celebration of the event! There was a distinct American feel this year, with iconic records attempted on US soil which best represented the United States.

In the US, we’ve always celebrated a full week to honor the day. Beginning on Friday, November 6th, Forth Worth, Texas played host to the record for Most People Twirling Lassos Simultaneously, with 23 wranglers taking the crown at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo

      Cowgirl 1

Moving east of the Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee, several hundred cheerleaders from the Universal Cheerleading Association set out to break the record for the Largest Cheerleading Dance!  A total of 297 cheerleaders from across the Mid-South successfully danced their way into the record book. Cheerleaders were prepped to perform a sideline cheer they learned at camp, along with the “Cupid Shuffle” for 5 min 43 sec.

      bdcheer01.jpg

      On to the Big Apple!

Our neighborhood here in New York also played host to unique GWR Day record attempts. First, renowned eatery Serendipity 3 went for the Largest Cup of Hot Chocolate which measured in at an astonishing 4 gallons! To make the massive drink, the restaurant used 12 pounds of cocoa powder, eight quarts of heavy cream and one pound of shaved French chocolate. The cup itself measured 11 inches tall and 14 inches wide.

In addition, our partnership with CBS News’ The Early Show hosted a week long of record breaking segments. Highlights from the week included a very hair raising record attempt for the Longest Dreadlock!  After a visit to the salon this year in stylists helped detangle some of the hair and Asha Mandela's dreadlock had actually grown over 10 ft since last year’s GWR Day measurement. With measuring tape in hand, GWR Adjudicator Stuart Claxton was able to determine the new length which had grown to an astonishing 19 ft 6.5 in.

      dread.JPG
Paul “Dizzy Hips” Blair also visited The Early Show on GWR Day, bringing his enthusiasm for hula hooping to new heights while breaking the record for the Most Hula Hoops Spun Simultaneously. With the audience chanting his name - “Dizzy! Dizzy!” - he was able to spin 132 hoops setting a new Guinness World Record!

No strangers to GWR Day, the World Sport Stacking Association hosted their annual STACK UP! challenge and were well on their way to break the Most People Sport Stacking Simultaneously in Multiple Locations record with 268,383 participants tallied so far. Stackers from around the world committed to sport stacking for a 30 minute stretch. Twenty-eight countries were involved and although most were from the US & Canada; Argentina, Australia, Belize, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Malaysia Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK also had registered stackers.

Fitting for Veterans Day, we partnered with Cosmopolitan Magazine & Maybelline NY who collected 1,817 Lip Print Kisses on Postcards to send across to our troops overseas! Actress Anna-Lynn McCord from the TV series 90210 was the record's spokesgal.

Promoting education, understanding and respect for human rights, six members of the International Solidarity for Human Rights - The New Generation, succeeded in their record quest for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud By a Team.  The record attempt began November 3rd in Miami at the InterAmerican Campus of Miami Dade College and culminated on Guinness World Records Day, November 12th. Guinness World Records adjudicator Mariamarta Ruano-Graham, was on hand to validate the feat.

      15163_1298196974200_1208659312_914729_1231958_n.jpg
The six women, Elizabeth Sánchez Vegas, Ana María Leonardi, María Cristina Alarcón, Lilly Blanco, Devorah Sasha and Isabel Viera read their way into the record books, reading for 240 hr 15 min 27 sec, all of which was streamed live here on our website!

And finally, Titan, a 4-year-old Great Dane from San Diego owned by Diana Taylor took home the title of Tallest Living Dog. Titan, a special needs dog who is deaf, blind and epileptic was the sole animal record in over 30 records getting broken internationally for GWR Day. He measured in at a staggering 42.25 inches! Titan's popularity and newfound Guinness World Record glory has helped raise a general awareness of special-needs and shelter animals.

We salute all of those who represented the US this year in what proved to be the most successful and dynamic Guinness World Records Day to date!

This month a few of us at Guinness World Records received a sporting treat courtesy of the Gillette Four Nations rugby league tournament who supplied us with tickets to the Australia vz New Zealand match at The Stoop last Saturday. For those of you who missed it the repeat of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final ended in a thrilling 20-20 draw with Australia running in a last gasp try to avoid defeat.

      Rugby League Four Nations

This is the first four nations tournament, replacing the tri-nations tournament which Australia won three times, the most wins of the rugby league tri-nations. Darren Lockyer was also on show but failed to score a try, almost surprising considering he shares the record (with kiwi Joe Vagana) for the most tries scored in rugby league tri-nations matches an impressive nine.

      October records

The month kicked off with a brand new record holder entering our Records Database in the Nuevo Estadio Jose Zorrilla, in Valladolid, Spain. 'Supersub' Iker Munian came off the bench for Athletic Club Bilbao to score the equaliser against Real Valladolid and secure his team a 2-2 draw. Aged 16 years and 289 days old he was the youngest goalscorer in the top division of Spanish football.

      Iker MunianIker Munian

But after that it has been a case of the usual suspects tightening their grip on some Guinness World Records…

On 25 October 2009 Frenchman Sebastien Loeb raced to victory at the Rally of Great Britain for the second consecutive year to pip Finnish rival Mikko Hirvonen to the 2009 World Rally Championship by just one point! It was his sixth consecutive World Rally Championship the most WRC titles and the most consecutive. It was also his 53rd race win extending his record for the most WRC race wins.

      Sebastien Loeb

A week before that we had another serial record-breaker add a new record to his list. New England Patriots Tom Brady threw an incredible five touchdown passes in the 2nd quarter of their 59-0 demolition of Tennessee Titans. The most touchdown passes in one quarter his fourth Guinness World Record!

      Tom Brady

While we are talking NFL and multiple record-holders - if Brett Favre doesn’t have enough records already, he has now become the subject of a Guinness World Records attempt! Check here to see how the guys at Sportsnation got on as they attempted the most mentions of a name on a TV show

Also in last month’s blog I told you to watch out for Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final...by beating St.Helens 18 points to 10 at Old Trafford, Manchester, United Kingdom, they won their third title in a row the most consecutive Super League titles! Remember you heard it here first!

      Leeds RhinosLeeds Rhinos

      October “almost” records

While the following are NOT records yet...we are currently researching to see if this incredible effort from Argentina’s Martin Palermo could be the longest headed goal in national top division football??

And as for the longest volleyed goal – Dejan Stankovic has put himself in contention with this amazing effort!

      What’s coming up in November?

The tennis season draws to a close next month and the traditional ATP World Tour Finals (the tournament formerly known as the ATP Tour Championships and Tennis Masters Cup) comes to London, United Kingdom for the first time ever. In the 1980s Ivan Lendl won the tournament five times, in the 1990s Pete Sampras matched him, now in the final year of the noughties, Roger Federer is hoping for his fifth title to equal the record for the most wins of the ATP World Tour Finals.

      Roger Federer

In women’s tennis the Fed Cup (a tournament formerly known as the Federation Cup) has reached it’s climax with the final taking place on 7-8 November. In this year’s edition Italy face off against USA with the States hoping to win their 18th title extending their record for the most wins of the Fed Cup by a team.

      What you did this month!!

One of Colombia's most prestigious shoe designers, Alexs created 20 unique pairs of shoes, literally from the scratch, in a time of 9 hr 40 min 32 sec. Welcome to the re-vamped sports blog, giving you a monthly update to what sports records have been keeping us busy here at Guinness World Records and what we can expect to see broken in the near future!

      August records

In terms of record-breaking one man’s 6 ft 4 in frame overshadowed everybody this month. Usain Bolt (Jamaica) shattered his own world records set at last year’s Olympics in both sprint distances during the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. On 16 August he blew away the field with a mind-blowing 9.58 second run in the 100 metres a whole 0.11 seconds faster than his Beijing effort, which represented the biggest drop in the 100 metres world record since digital timing began.

      Fastest run 100 metres (male)

Four days later Bolt broke his 200 metres time of 19.30 seconds (also set in Beijing) by the same margin finishing streets ahead of field in 19.19 seconds. Bolt became the first man ever to simultaneously hold Olympic and World Championship gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metres.

      Fastest man everFastest man ever

Only one other world record fell at the IAAF World Championships:

Furthest hammer throw (female) - 77.96 m (255 ft 9 in) by Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland) in Berlin, Germany, on 22 August 2009.

      Anita Wlodarczyk

In Rugby Union the 2009 tri-nations is in full swing with the winner of the most tri-nations titles New Zealand (nine times before you ask) on the receiving end of  a record-breaking performance from South Africa’s fly –half Morne Steyn. On 1 August Steyn scored one try, one conversion and eight penalties totalling 31 points the most points scored by an individual in a tri-nations match to give South Africa a 31-19 victory over New Zealand in Durban.

      Morne Steyn in action

Incidentally in August 2008 South African winger Jongi Nokwe had scored the most tries by an individual in a tri-nations match when he ran in four against Australia for a 53-8 victory in Johannesburg.

      What's coming in September?

In September there is plenty of sport to keep everybody occupied. The UEFA Champions League proper starts on 15 September and a revamped Real Madrid with the most expensive footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to regain their record of the most Champions League victories which was equalled at 77 by  Manchester United last season.

      Cristiano Ronaldo

The NFL season starts on 10 September with Brett Favre still playing, this time lining up with the Minnesota Vikings and likely to increase his record for the most pass completions in an NFL career by a quarterback which currently stands at 5,720 completions.

Brett Favre is back!Brett Favre is back!

The World Stone Skimming Championships takes place on 27 September on Easdale Island in Scotland. Contestants will be hoping to beat the record for the most skips of a skimming stone an incredible 51 by Russel Byars in Pennsylvania in 2007.

      Stone Skimmers

      What you did this month!

Here at Guinness World Records we approved several new sporting records from the fastest marathon on crutches (Simon Baker at the Dublin Marathon who finished in 6 hr 42 min 47 secs) to the largest open water swimming race (13,755 participants at the Midmar Mile in South Africa).

Also you can find out who set the record for the highest bicycle bunny hop below!

    • Description:

On Saturday, 12 July 2008, the community of Fort Scott, Kansas, USA, completed the longest line of coins, measuring 64.88 km (40.32 miles) and consisting of 3,406,234 US 1 cent coins. The event took place in the Fort Scott Middle School parking lot starting on the evening of Tuesday, 8 July, and running through to 3 a.m. on the Saturday morning. The previous record of 55.63 km (34.57 miles) had been set in Malaysia in 1995. The Guinness World Records™ attempt was organized by Youth Activities Team (YAT) and is part of a “Pennies for the Park” fundraiser that YAT has conducted in an effort to raise money for improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott.

      111362- longest lin of coins.jpg.jpg
Hundreds of local residents participated in laying the pennies, from early morning till late at night. YAT Co-convener Diana Mitchell attributed the achievement to the community of Fort Scott. “I’m so proud of this entire town,” she declared. “This was not just YAT’s win. It was an entire town. What a great day to be living in Fort Scott!”

Fort Scott should be proud of its community, as they had set another record on the previous day by laying one mile of pennies in 2 hr, 23 min, 1 sec. They beat the previous record for the fastest mile of pennies by just 74 seconds.

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Kaoru Ishikawa announced two new world records and presented certificates to the YAT team. Kaoru also praised the community spirit of Fort Scott: “I have seen many exciting events since I joined GWR,” she stated, “but the joining together of a community for one common goal like this was truly inspirational.”

  • Longest marathon playing guita Longest marathon playing guitar

    • From: gwr_adj_archive
    • Description:

This record adjudication is the story of one very determined young man. Aakash Gupta is just 14 years old and is already a grade “A” student, rollerskating champion and cross-country champion. Yet he was determined to achieve more, and set a new record for the longest marathon playing guitar.

      080701_Guitar_Marathon_1.jpg
Aakash cut a lonely figure when first seen by Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Ralph Hannah in his school’s auditorium. It soon became clear there was a team of devoted supporters helping him in his record attempt, though. From his mother, who kept him fed and watered, to the local voluntary organization who maintained a prayer vigil, Aakash seemed to have the whole support of Agra. Throughout the attempt, well-wishers visited him, including another local Guinness World Records record-holder, Dinesh Shandilya, who had constructed the then largest flute in 1996.

The record for the longest marathon playing guitar had stood at 44 hours since 2005 – until 6:31 a.m. on Tuesday, 24 June 2008, when Aakash officially broke the record. The moment was marked by sheer happiness as relatives, sponsors and GWR’s Ralph crammed onto the stage to congratulate Aakash – and share the moment with the rest of India, thanks to the presence of the national media.

Aakash continued through the day and eventually stopped strumming after 53 hr, 4 min. His daily guitar practice and yoga routine had most certainly paid off. Determination had won the day and Aakash (his name is the Hindi word for “sky”) had reached new heights.

On Sunday, 24 February 2008, Guinness World Records™ observed a document scan measuring just under 1.2 km (0.75 miles) long, at the 2008 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition, the healthcare IT industry’s largest annual event.

The record-setting, uninterrupted scan measured 1,181 m (3,875 ft) and took 1 hr, 17 min, 22 sec to complete. Employees of Bowe Bell + Howell (BBH), Durham, NC, who were attempting the record, used the Trūper 3600 low-volume production scanner to process the extra-long document. The scan sets the stage for a paperless environment via accurate permanent recording of a variety of paper documents in a reliable manner.

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Gareth Deaves travelled to Orlando, USA, from London, UK, to validate the record. He confirmed that the attempt met the criteria set forth by Guinness World Records, which stipulated in part that the scanned document should be a continuous file in one single page, and that the original document should be made out of paper.

“Guinness World Records is committed to recognizing the highest levels of achievement, and I am delighted to announce that today’s attempt has been successful,” Gareth declared. “Bowe Bell + Howell are now record holders for the longest scanned document, at 3,875 ft.”
