Tampa, FL (November 10, 2009) – On Saturday, November 21, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Ybor City Museum Society will host the Verizon Cigar Heritage Festival during which Wallace and Margarita Reyes will attempt to break the current Guinness World Records record by building a cigar that spans nearly a city block. The Reyes and their team of 48 volunteers will construct a 180+ foot, 64 ring gauge cigar within a 10-hour period.The Verizon Cigar Heritage Festival is a family-friendly event that features traditional foods, cultural entertainment, kid zone, game zone with NCAA football, a beer and wine garden, some of the world's finest cigars, and live broadcasts by Cigar Dave, Jack Harris, Ted Webb and Jeff Fisher. Attendees will may also take Ybor City Museum State Park tours, shop at the Ybor City Saturday Market and Centennial Park 19th Street Shops or enjoy many other aspects of the festival.
The Reyes have been constructing the world's longest cigar in eighteen 10-foot sections at the Museum Store Cigar Gallery, 1820 N. 9th Avenue, Tampa, FL 33605. Final assembly of the sections to break the current Guinness World Records record will take place at the Verizon Cigar Heritage Festival. This is the first longest cigar record attempt worldwide during which a Guinness World Records Adjudicator will be present to immediately certify the record, expected to be attained at sometime between 3:00 and 3:45 p.m. An announcement to the local, national and international press will be made shortly thereafter by Guinness World Records.
Wallace and Margarita Reyes, co-owners of Gonzalez Habano Cigar Co., broke their first world record for the longest cigar on November 18, 2006 during that year's Cigar Heritage Festival. The 101-foot, 64 ring gauge cigar was finished in front of hundreds of people.
The record has since been broken. The current holder of the record is Jose Castelar in Havana, Cuba who constructed a cigar of 148 feet and 11 inches on May 7, 2008. There is friendly competition between the Tampa and Cuba cigar makers, and this most recent world record attempt will be a lively and unique event.
The Ybor City Museum Society is a Citizen Support Organization (CSO) whose mission is preserving, promoting and celebrating the unique cultural heritage of Ybor City and supporting the Ybor City Museum State Park. All proceeds from Cigar Heritage Festival benefit the Society.

On a chilly Wednesday morning we all assembled at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue in New York as part of our week-long record-fest in celebration of GWR Day on .
It had a been a challenging week as they say and we had yet to set or break any Guinness World Records on the show but today was the day we felt it had to happen. And why were we so certain? All because of a rather special lady called Asha Mandela.
Who on earth is Asha Mandela?
Well since GWR Day in 2008 when our very own Carlos Martinez visited her in Florida, she has held the world record for the longest dreadlock. Not the longest hair (currently 18 ft 5.54 in) but for the longest dreadlock which Carlos measured at 8 ft 6 in.
So here's the scoop, Asha's hair had grown and she had unravelled her dreadlock even more so we felt sure we had a record-breaking moment on our hands. Out came hosts Maggie Rodriguez, Harry Smith, Russ Mitchell and Dave Price as waited to watch history in the making.
After some brief banter, Asha lay down and Maggie took her position as Chief One-End-of-the-Tape-Measure-Holder while we headed towards the end of the dreadlock pulling the tape measure out as we did so. Harry Smith took position at the other end making sure the long lock was straight. Dave Price shouted out the measurement:
"Ten feet...eleven feet...twelve feet...thirteen feet...............NINETEEN FEET SIX-AND-A-HALF INCHES!!!"
Congratulations Asha!!!

On 25 October 2009，Fuxin City in China made several entries into Guinness World Records™, all of which had something to do with agate.
The largest agate was verified at first. With a total weight of 61,090.2 kg(134,680.84 lb), this piece of agate is now named “ King of Agate” by the local people in Fuxin City. The agate was discovered in Fuxin in 2004 and it is now displayed at Jiexin Square in Fuxin City.
The longest abacus measures 13.11 m (43 ft 0.14 in), beating the previous record of 12.24 m.It is 12.2 cm (4.8 in )tall and consists of 570 wooden beams and 3990 agate beads. At the event, ten students from Fuxin demonstrated the skill of calculating with this abacus.
The largest bead mosaic measures 6.72 m² (72.33 ft²) and was achieved by Cao Zhitao(China). It measures 3 m (9 ft 10.11 in)long and 2.24 m (7 ft 4.19 in) wide and contains 30,000 agate beads. The mosaic depicts the Chinese character “jade” in the shape of a dragon, and the characters “Fuxin China, Agate City”.
The whole event was organized by the Development & Reform Commission of Fuxin Municipal Government. They would like to make their agate enjoy more publicity, as Fuxin is well known for its agate. Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Angela Wu attended the event and presented the certificates to the organizers.

GWR DAY: Fastest time to burst

In the lead up to Guinness World Records Day, Brits that tune into BBC1 children’s television programme ‘Blue Peter’, could be in for something very special. On Tuesday 10th November 2009 Norwich born power lifting champion Shaun Jones will attempt to break the record for the fastest time to burst a hot water bottle. That’s right; using only his breath Shaun will blow into the hard plastic container and literally attempt to blow the current record to bits!
This is Shaun stood alongside his singing motivational coach, Big Dom.
The record is currently held by the American, Brian Jackson. He managed the feat in 51.98 seconds at the Tahlequah High School, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, USA, on 13 April 2006.

Interesting side note:Blue Peter holds a Guinness World Record of its own for being the longest running children's magazine programme

Longest UTV Ramp Jump

On the 31 October 2009 I visited San Diego (USA) to witness Junior (Hellyaachwehay) Quisquis attempt to break the record for the Longest UTV Ramp Jump. The current record was set in November 2008 by Andy Bell (USA) at a very respectful 41 ft 6 in, Junior knew this was a very challenging record attempt, he also knew he would have to look fear straight in the face if he was to achieve his life’s dream of becoming a Guinness World Records™ record holder.
Junior has been racing the Yamaha Rhino UTV’s for many years, he therefore knows how to handle the power they provide over uneven surfaces like this San Diego dirt track, although junior has a large amount of experience, this was the first time he was going to attempt this kind of stunt and didn’t have any practise runs/jumps before his attempt.
Looking at the dirt ramps Junior put his foot down to start his run up, he hit the take off ramp with speed and power knowing that one small miscalculation would end his record attempt, but could also put his own safety in jeopardy, the landing was successful much to the delight of his friends and family who were cheering along amongst the crowds of people who had all come to watch Junior perform this incredible stunt.
Junior’s first jump was successful as he managed to break the record by achieving a total distance of 44ft and 5 inches. However Junior wasn’t finished yet, with the crowds cheering him on and the adrenaline pumping through his veins, he decided to give it a second go attempting to better his new record, and creating a greater distance for others to try and break in the future. On Junior’s second attempt he managed to travel even further an achieved a very impressive 47 ft and 8 inches.
In celebration Junior performed several donuts and wheel spins much to the delight of the on looking crowds, before he headed off to the after party to celebrate his new Guinness World Records achievement.

As in previous years, wacky and wonderful Brits promise to showcase their talent and raise money for their favourite charities on Guinness World Records Day. Among the dozens of attempts planned around the country, London will host the big comeback of 59-year old Manjit Singh who will perform a hair-raising attempt for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with hair (New World Record). Also in the Capital, commuters will literally come together at St Pancras Station for the most people hugging for one minute (100), while hundreds will descend on Alexandra Palace as they attempt to skate their way into the records book for the longest conga on ice (107). In Southampton the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will team up with Justdance Salsa for the largest salsa dance (451). Demonstrating his physical strength in support of the British Heart Foundation, “British Master’s Squat Power Lifting Champion” Shaun Jones from Norwich hopes to grab the title for most weight squat lifted in one hour (41,600kg) and the fastest hot water bottle burst (51.98 secs). In Northern Ireland, Oaks Shopping Centre will celebrate Guinness World Records Day with a record attempt for largest human mattress dominoes (121) to raise money for Marie Curie cancer nurses, and Ballyclare High School will hold the largest sports lesson (250). Meanwhile, Carr’s Glen Primary School in Belfast celebrates it 70th anniversary by organising the largest gathering of people dressed as storybook characters (NWR).

Across the Atlantic, the US will celebrate Guinness World Records Day with events including the largest cheerleading dance (225), in Memphis, Tennessee and most people lassoing simultaneously in Texas.

London, England: 28th October – Guinness World Records can confirm that Eliot Smith-Walters (UK) A.K.A Shadow Force, has broken into the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition for the longest winning streak on Tekken 6 – by beating 68 consecutive opponents in best-of three matches.
The successful record attempt took place at the MCM Expo in Docklands Excel Arena on Saturday 24th October. Official Guinness World Records representatives were present to adjudicate the feat, which is now shortlisted for inclusion in next year’s Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition.
Eliot’s character of choice was newcomer Lars Alexandersson, with Miguel Caballero Rojo, Lee Chaolan, and Sergei Dragunov selected against specific opponents. During the attempt he achieved 25 perfects and lost only 9 rounds, giving him a win:loss ratio of 100:7. Even the current UK champion and winner of Super Vs Battle 2009 Phil ‘Dinosaur’ Mackenzie was unable to break Eliot’s streak on the day.
Gaming Editor, Gaz Deaves, said: “It was certainly a dramatic few hours. With Dinosaur’s epic win at the Super vs. Battle this year we were expecting him to walk away with the record, so when Eliot KO’d him in the third round we almost couldn’t believe what we were seeing. Overall the standard of play was very high, with Eliot clearly the strongest on the day.”

This month a few of us at Guinness World Records received a sporting treat courtesy of the Gillette Four Nations rugby league tournament who supplied us with tickets to the Australia vz New Zealand match at The Stoop last Saturday. For those of you who missed it the repeat of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final ended in a thrilling 20-20 draw with Australia running in a last gasp try to avoid defeat.
This is the first four nations tournament, replacing the tri-nations tournament which Australia won three times, the most wins of the rugby league tri-nations. Darren Lockyer was also on show but failed to score a try, almost surprising considering he shares the record (with kiwi Joe Vagana) for the most tries scored in rugby league tri-nations matches an impressive nine.
October records
The month kicked off with a brand new record holder entering our Records Database in the Nuevo Estadio Jose Zorrilla, in Valladolid, Spain. 'Supersub' Iker Munian came off the bench for Athletic Club Bilbao to score the equaliser against Real Valladolid and secure his team a 2-2 draw. Aged 16 years and 289 days old he was the youngest goalscorer in the top division of Spanish football.
But after that it has been a case of the usual suspects tightening their grip on some Guinness World Records…
On 25 October 2009 Frenchman Sebastien Loeb raced to victory at the Rally of Great Britain for the second consecutive year to pip Finnish rival Mikko Hirvonen to the 2009 World Rally Championship by just one point! It was his sixth consecutive World Rally Championship the most WRC titles and the most consecutive. It was also his 53rd race win extending his record for the most WRC race wins.
A week before that we had another serial record-breaker add a new record to his list. New England Patriots Tom Brady threw an incredible five touchdown passes in the 2nd quarter of their 59-0 demolition of Tennessee Titans. The most touchdown passes in one quarter his fourth Guinness World Record!
While we are talking NFL and multiple record-holders - if Brett Favre doesn’t have enough records already, he has now become the subject of a Guinness World Records attempt! Check here to see how the guys at Sportsnation got on as they attempted the most mentions of a name on a TV show…
Also in last month’s blog I told you to watch out for Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final...by beating St.Helens 18 points to 10 at Old Trafford, Manchester, United Kingdom, they won their third title in a row the most consecutive Super League titles! Remember you heard it here first!
October “almost” records
While the following are NOT records yet...we are currently researching to see if this incredible effort from Argentina’s Martin Palermo could be the longest headed goal in national top division football??
And as for the longest volleyed goal – Dejan Stankovic has put himself in contention with this amazing effort!
What’s coming up in November?
The tennis season draws to a close next month and the traditional ATP World Tour Finals (the tournament formerly known as the ATP Tour Championships and Tennis Masters Cup) comes to London, United Kingdom for the first time ever. In the 1980s Ivan Lendl won the tournament five times, in the 1990s Pete Sampras matched him, now in the final year of the noughties, Roger Federer is hoping for his fifth title to equal the record for the most wins of the ATP World Tour Finals.
In women’s tennis the Fed Cup (a tournament formerly known as the Federation Cup) has reached it’s climax with the final taking place on 7-8 November. In this year’s edition Italy face off against USA with the States hoping to win their 18th title extending their record for the most wins of the Fed Cup by a team.
