Kimani Nganga Maruge, the world's oldest pupil, died earlier this year.  Incase you missed the news, here's a short article from the BBC News website on the life of an inspirational figure

      14 August 2009

Kenya's oldest pupil, Kimani Nganga Maruge, has died in Nairobi aged 90.

The great-grandfather held the Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to start primary school, at the age of 84.

His house in the Rift Valley was burnt down in post-election violence last year and he was later moved from a camp to an old people's home in the capital.

Despite the disruption, Mr Maruge kept hard at his studies and had two years left to finish his primary education.

Mr Maruge, a veteran of the Mau Mau independence movement, never had the opportunity to go to school when he was younger.

The father-of-five said he wanted to learn how to read the Bible for himself and he was also suspicious that he might not have been getting his full pension so he was also keen to study maths.

In 2004 he enrolled at Kapkenduywa primary school, in Eldoret, a year after the Kenyan government introduced free primary schooling.

With one of the best attendance records he was made a prefect in the school.

Two of his 30 grandchildren, who had been at the same school, said he had eventually wanted to complete a veterinary diploma.

      'Courageous'

Mumbi Kamuri, head of Cheshire Homes in Kenya where Mr Maruge spent the last year of his life, told the BBC he was dedicated to his studies right to the end.

Even after he was diagnosed with cancer in February he asked for teachers to teach him at home, she said.

"He was a very courageous man," she said.

"Even if you don't see it through to the end, you will still have achieved something."

In 2005, he travelled to the United States where he called on world leaders attending a summit to make education for the poor a priority.

The BBC's Will Ross in Nairobi says he will be remembered by many people as an inspirational figure who brought new meaning to the phrase, "it's never too late".

  • Michael Jackson dies at 50

    • From: GuinnessWorldRecords
    • Description:

Guinness World Records is saddened to hear of the death of Michael Jackson at the age of 50.

Jackson holds numerous Guinness World Records including the most Grammy Awards won in a year, most hit singles in the UK charts in a year, best selling album of all time, longest span of No.1 hits by an R&B artist, best selling music video, highest annual earnings ever for a pop star, and most successful pop music family.

      Michael Jackson & Craig Glenday

Speaking in London tonight, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday commented "I will always be immensely proud to know that Michael considered me a friend, and I know that everyone at Guinness World Records will be numb from hearing the news that this gentle, kind, shy man is no longer with us. On his last visit to the Guinness World Records office, he devoted a few valuable hours of his time being photographed with everyone, and we were all touched by his humility and willingness to please everyone present with autographs and photos. I'm honoured to have had the chance to spend some time with such a wonderfully talented artist - the man we called the Most Famous Living Man on Earth - and to present him with his favourite world record of all, the biggest selling album of all time, for Thriller, of course. He leaves behind an incredible musical legacy and a body of work unrivalled by any other performer."

  • ONE-ON-ONE WITH GWR CERTIFICAT

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

You know in many ways it isn't us that are the center of attention when we go out and judge Guinness World Record attempts but actually one of our most valuable colleagues - the Guinness World Records certificate.

The embodiment of everything we represent - success, superlatives, achievement, glamour - it has come to be our trusty companion for many, many years and yet it has always been reclusive, shying away from the public and coming out only when appropriate.  So I took it upon myself to sit down and chat with our trusty friend marking the first of a series of ONE-ON-ONE WITH GWR CERTIFICATE interviews in which we will bring to you the views and opinions of what it is like to be at the center of the Guinness World Records universe.

      One-on-One with GWR certificate 001.jpg

Hello and welcome! Thank you, it's a pleasure to be here.

You're looking a little dusty there, have you been travelling? Well, you know, I travel all over the world and and I'm present whenever there's a successful Guinness World Record attempt so yes, most of the time I will be travelling.  I just came back from the MLS All-Star Game.  Man, that was a great gig. And just for the record:  GO RED BULLS!

Are you a big sports fan? I'm a fan of everything.  The biggest, the smallest, the fastest, the tallest...you know pretty much anything that ends in -est.  Except jest, or test, or digest or nest.  You know, apart from those words that end in -est.

Of course.  Is it hard being on the road so much?  I mean do you have time for any relationships? Well, there have been other certificates sure, I mean I'm no saint you know what I mean!  But for the most part I play it by the book.  And by that I mean the Guinness World Records book.  Not that I don't dally now and again.  It's hard you know.  I mean I'm a certificate.  I need things as much as the next authorizing document.

Do you and the Guinness World Records book get on?  Yeah most of the time.  I mean, we kinda compete for attention you know?  I'll be there in the middle of photo shoot, working it and then someone says "Oh what about the book?" and out he comes all "Look at me!  Look at my shiny new cover!" and I'm like "Whatever dude, do you hang on people's walls?  The most they see of you is your little spine".  But you know, that's just now and again.  For the most part, we're cool.

      One-on-One with GWR certificate 006.jpg

I bet. Where are you going next? Not sure, there's a big gig in Indonesia I have to go to on August 16th and then there's this NASCAR race I have to be at on the 22nd.  That's what it's like man, flying around the world, putting a smile on people's faces as much as I can.

Will you come back and visit us?  Stuart, it would be a pleasure.  Always happy to give the folks at home my best side.  Whether it's my shiny blue side or my cork side, I put it all out there for the people.

      One-on-One with GWR certificate 003.jpg

Thank you GWR Certificate.  Good luck and see you soon!  Fo sho man, fo sho.

JACK INGRAM SMASHES GUINNESS WORLD RECORD WITH 215 INTERVIEWS IN 24 HOURS

INGRAM'S BIG DREAMS & HIGH HOPES -IN STORES NOW

NASHVILLE, TN - Aug. 26, 2009 - Country music's marathon man Jack Ingram dove headfirst into the release day of his new album BIG DREAMS & HIGH HOPES by setting the Guinness World Record this morning for "Most Consecutive Radio Interviews In A 24 Hour Period."   Ingram notched 215 interviews across most of the 50 states and parts of Canada, Ireland and Australia, easily shattering the previous record of 96 interviews.

Ingram began interviews in New York City yesterday morning at 8:00am at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge with the Manhattan skyline behind him as BIG DREAMS & HIGH HOPES hit store shelves.  He continued through the night and wrapped up this morning with a performance of the album's lead and current Top 10 single "Barefoot and Crazy" on the national morning show Fox & Friends.   CMT.com exclusively streamed the event, and recorded a record number of viewers in what is also the longest continuous stream the site has ever attempted.

"Guinness World Records has been chronicling records for more than 50 years and today is no different," said Laura Plunkett, Guinness World Record Adjudicator.  "We are pleased to announce that Jack Ingram has broken the record for the 'most radio interviews in 24 hours' at a staggering 215 interviews!"

"After the last 24 hours, I officially have nothing left to say," concluded Ingram.

Ingram will continue the momentum by jetting straight to his home state of Texas to play Dallas tonight and Austin on Thursday before rounding out the week opening three shows for Toby Keith in California. • Stargate Atlantis needs our he

    • From: batholo
    • Description:

Stargate Atlantis needs our help! Sign the petition!

I’m such a fan of Stargate Atlantis. I watch it religiously and I know all the scenes! It’s in my system and I just can’t imagine life without this show on TV. Have you heard? MGM has already announced that they are going to end the show after their 5th season. Why? It’s probably the best sci-fi show on TV to date! Why cancel a show that has a very solid audience that watches it religiously the same as I do?

Obviously, the producers know how popular Stargate Atlantis is and thought that it’s just too good for TV and should be made into a movie. Great! Who wouldn’t want to watch a movie version of their favorite sci-fi TV series? But why would they cancel the show just to pave the way for its movie series? There’s too much here and the purpose is not to benefit the fans but so they could fatten their pockets even more! Come on now! Why hurt us after we supported your show? It is just not fair!

I am so happy to see many fans who decided to start a petition. It’s a great idea! It’s time for us to save our favorite TV show. Let us save Atlantis! It’s our time to be a part of the show’s story. Now is our time to save Atlantis, Of course it’s not like we have to pack our bags and train to be one of these futuristic scientists but it’s time for us to unite and save the show! These petitions are calling for all the Stargate Atlantis fans and supporters to sign their names so our voices would be heard by SGA’s executive producers. It’s not fair! We have to show them that what they plan on doing is really not fair!

Friday nights would no longer be fun. I usually prepare myself after dinner and find a comfortable place in front of the TV in anticipation of this show. I look forward to Friday nights all the time! Without SGA, what’s there to look forward to? It’s sad… tragic! Looking forward for the next movie is like waiting for your birthday each year!

I’m just one of the many disappointed fans of SGA. These executive producers should reconsider. Should we boycott and show them our disappointment? But then we’d be missing more of their awesome shows. We should all support the circulating of the online petition asking for these executive producers to change their mind and start thinking about the 6th season. The 5th season of Stargate Atlantis is a lot better than the previous seasons and we are expecting for the 6th. It can’t just end here. It’s just too good to end.

SciFi will have nothing to boast about after their station won’t have Stargate Atlantis for their audience. Come on now, what’s left to watch in that channel after SGA?

Would it have been different if they have used a different channel to show Stargate Atlantis? SG1 was a great show and it was canceled prematurely as well. I was a die-hard fanatic of SG1 also and I was so disappointed when they announced that my favorite show on TV was about to say it’s goodbye. I was sad but I thank God for Stargate Atlantis. At least, SG1 had 10 seasons so I was able to enjoy watching it for years! Stargate Atlantis only had 5 episodes and it’s even better than SG1 but why only 5 episodes? Can the executive producers answer this question for us?

Why the sudden death for our favorite sci-fi shows? They can cancel all those other boring shows on Sci-Fi if they want to, but why cancel the most popular one? It doesn’t really make sense to me. I will miss the characters whom I already grown to love. What will happen to them after this? Will they be on the movie version of Stargate Atlantis? I hope so. But, still that’s just not right. They deserve to be on Air every Friday! I am not saying that they don’t deserve to be on the silver screen. Heck, I’d die to watch the movie version of SGA but I just can’t stand the fact that they are canceling the show.

I’m sure many would agree that there’s not much on TV right now that is worth watching. I don’t watch TV on most days except for the news and some sports shows but that’s just about it. No new shows interest me that much anymore except for Stargate Atlantis. I’m a sucker for sci-fi shows but I am very choosy as well. Sci-fi shows can be really boring when the storyline is boring. SGA has an awesome storyline that caught me right from the first time I watched it. I even have DVDs of the shows so I could watch them over and over again. I’m a die hard fan and I am here, asking all of you die hard SGA fans out there, to support the online petition. Please, please, let’s support our favorite show.

I’m done voicing out my opinion but I’m still not through with my disappointment and I will continue to fight for my favorite show. Its one great show that we just have to keep on air. Whether or not we’d be successful, at least we can say that we did our part in keeping it on air. If the executive producers won’t listen to our plight, I bet it’s time for us to start looking for other shows that may interest us and just wait for the movie series then. It’s unfair and disappointing but I will never say never. I will sign as many online petitions and start a petition asking my fellow fans to support our loved team of scientists led by Major John Sheppard.

You gave us a great show SCI-Fi, please don’t just take it away from us. It will break many hearts and will disappoint even more. Hope you’ll make the right decision and keep the show on air!

  • Longest UTV Ramp Jump

    • From: gwr_carl
    • Description:

On the 31 October 2009 I visited San Diego (USA) to witness Junior (Hellyaachwehay) Quisquis attempt to break the record for the Longest UTV Ramp Jump. The current record was set in November 2008 by Andy Bell (USA) at a very respectful 41 ft 6 in, Junior knew this was a very challenging record attempt, he also knew he would have to look fear straight in the face if he was to achieve his life’s dream of becoming a Guinness World Records™ record holder.

      DSC01337.JPG

Junior has been racing the Yamaha Rhino UTV’s for many years, he therefore knows how to handle the power they provide over uneven surfaces like this San Diego dirt track, although junior has a large amount of experience, this was the first time he was going to attempt this kind of stunt and didn’t have any practise runs/jumps before his attempt.

Looking at the dirt ramps Junior put his foot down to start his run up, he hit the take off ramp with speed and power knowing that one small miscalculation would end his record attempt, but could also put his own safety in jeopardy, the landing was successful much to the delight of his friends and family who were cheering along amongst the crowds of people who had all come to watch Junior perform this incredible stunt.

      DSC01339.JPG

Junior’s first jump was successful as he managed to break the record by achieving a total distance of 44ft and 5 inches. However Junior wasn’t finished yet, with the crowds cheering him on and the adrenaline pumping through his veins, he decided to give it a second go attempting to better his new record, and creating a greater distance for others to try and break in the future. On Junior’s second attempt he managed to travel even further an achieved a very impressive 47 ft and 8 inches.

      Longest UTV Ramp Jump.JPG

In celebration Junior performed several donuts and wheel spins much to the delight of the on looking crowds, before he headed off to the after party to celebrate his new Guinness World Records achievement.

  • Where in the World is Sultan?

    • From: gwr_kelly
    • Description:

      Friday, October 23rd - Saturday, October 24th 2009

Sultan heads north to the cooler climate of Iceland after mixing it up in Spain and Portugal.  Read on as Kelly continues to keep us abreast of where in the world Sultan is today and what he's been getting up to!

      Sultan Iceland

Reykjavík, Iceland - famous for the 1986 Summit between former U.S. president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev - warmly welcomed Sultan to its shores and boy were they excited about his arrival!  In fact, even the flight crew on Icelandic Airways had been briefed about Sultan's visit and a flight-attendant transformed into an on-board photographer during the flight snapping dozens of shots of Sultan with the Captain and other crew members!

      Sultan armchair

More surprises were in store for Sultan upon his arrival to his hotel room, when he was overjoyed to see a custom-made armchair especially made to accomodate his record-breaking size.  We wondered whether it was the largest armchair in the world actually!  Sultan was so thrilled about it that the maker of the sofa even kindly agreed to send the sofa to Turkey. In addition to this the Icelandair Hotel, where Sultan was staying, informed him that his room will be named after him complete with a duplicate sofa and photos of Sultan as a permanent fixture in celebration of his visit.

Sultan was officially a rock star in Iceland.

Later that day, after his first television interview, Sultan headed to the site of the Reykjavík Summit (the former French consulate) called Höfði to take a few pictures along with a few shots of the breathtaking views.  Iceland sure is a beautiful country.

      Sultan Iceland

At midday, Sultan was then joined by Iceland Today for an interview followed by a press conference with local journalists.  Later, he then met the families and children of the Icelandic publishers of the Guinness World Records 2010 book for a photo shoot and book signing using his very own fingerprint.  Sultan is a big swimmer - literally - and wrapped up his day with a relaxing swim followed by a hot jacuzzi.

      Sultan

The following day, Sultan visited Smaralind Shopping Mall (the largest in Iceland) which hosted an event at which hundreds of locals turned up to meet him and get their copies of Guinness World Records 2010 autographed with his fingerprint.  A life-size ad was placed in front of the store so people could measure themselves against Sultan.  Over 700 books were bought that day and it was estimated that around 12,000 visitors stopped by the event!  That's around 4% of Iceland's population - WHAT!?  Closing the event, Sultan spoke to the crowds saying that although it was a very cold place, he had truly been touched by the overwhelming warmth of the people, especially by the staff at his hotel - TAKK (thank you) ICELAND!

Sultan heads back to Turkey for a short break but is back on the road on November 7th.

Stay tuned to find out where in the world Sultan's going next!

  • Greatest Distance Run By a Rel

    • From: gwr_carl
    • Description:

On 5 October 2009, the capital city of Romania, Bucharest, marked the finish line for an attempt to set the Guinness World Records achievement for the greatest distance run by a relay team. The razor manufacturer Gillette had decided to organize the feat, undertaken by hundreds of athletes in the Gillette Phenomenal Tour team, to celebrate the release of the Gillette Fusion Phenom razor.

      c6 3.jpg

The course the organizers had chosen took the Gillette Phenomenal Tour team all around Romania, covering the North, South, East and West of the country.

      c2.jpg

People from all over the country heard about this tremendous attempt and turned up at various stages throughout the route to support and join in – at times it looked like a scene from a Rocky film, with everyone running with the baton holder. It was clear the whole nation was really behind the event and appreciated both the mental and physical strength of all the runners involved.

      a2.jpg

Like any standard athletics event, this world record relay attempt had to be continuous, with participants literally running day and night. if at any point during the relay a runner dropped or touched the ground with the baton, the record attempt would be over and all the hard work, organization and training would be for nothing.

      a7.jpga7.jpg

After for over 14 extraordinary days of running both around the clock and the country, members of the Gillette team of runners headed towards the finish line in Herastrau Park on the 5 October 2009, having racked up an impressive distance of 3,096 Km (1,923 miles). Crowds of people greeted them as they set their new Guinness World Records achievement.

  • Most trees planted in 24 hours

    • From: gwr_aadil
    • Description:

On Wednesday, 15 July 2009, Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Aadil Ahmed attended the record attempt for the most trees planted in 24 hours by a team. The event took place in Keti Bundar, Thatta District, which is about 200 km (125 miles) south-east of Karachi in Pakistan.

      DSC04579.JPG

Aadil's journey for the event started with a three-hour car trip from the city of Karachi followed by a 40-minute boat journey to the location of the attempt, which was in quite a remote region, green and lush and surrounded by a lovely blue sea. It was a beautiful warm day with a nice breeze coming in over the water; Aadil received a warm welcome, with local town members throwing petals and a local band playing traditional music. The day turned into a festive event; fresh from the victory of the T20 Cricket World Cup the Pakistanis were determined to achieve a new GWR feat.

      DSC04588.JPG

The event was organized by the Ministry of Environment (Government of Pakistan) and was part of their planned initiatives to mark 2009 as the National Year of Environment in Pakistan. The attempt took place in collaboration with the Forest Department Sindh and the National Bank of Pakistan.

The team of 300 planters – local community members who had experiencing of working in the costal area – were carefully selected and well prepared for the event. Due to nature of the land being used the planters knew they had a difficult task on their hands, as they had to plant as many trees as they could before the tide came in: once the tide was in, planting would have to stop for a few hours. Mudflats were chosen as the location for this event, as this is the best location for the type of tree that was to be planted.

      DSC04609.JPG

The planters had chosen mangrove (rhizophora mucronata) saplings, as this kind of tree plays an important role in carbon seizure and acts as a protection against natural disasters such as tsunamis. Mangrove forests are also a great breeding ground for fish, shrimps, prawns and other wildlife.

      keti_bundar_Planters.jpg

Fifteen teams took part, each consisting of 20 members; every team was given a dedicated portion of land to work on, which was clearly marked out with flags. The event took place on two islands that are next to each other and a total of 322 hectares (795.85 acres) of land were used in the record attempt.

      DSC04584.JPG
Mr Tahir Qureshi, an International Union for Conservation of Nature member, and Marvi Memon, a National Assemble member, were elected as independent witnesses and were present throughout the event, making sure everything was conducted in the correct manner.

      keti_bundar_planter.jpg

The record attempt was attended by many local dignitaries and media, including the Minister of Environment for Pakistan, Hamidullah Jan Afridi, who had travelled from the capital Islamabad to attend the event. Mr Kamran Lashari (Secretary for the Ministry of the Environment) played a large role in creating the festivities surrounding the event, making sure the locals and guests enjoyed the day; throughout the event Mr Lashari encouraged the planters by trying to boost morale in the teams.

The record attempt took seven months to plan and involved many members of the Forestry Wing within the Ministry of Environment, including: Dr Muhammad Iqbal Sial (Inspector General for Forests); Dr Shazad and Mr Qaimkhani (Deputy Inspector Generals for Forests); Mr Naeem Raja (Assistant Inspector General for Forests); event co-ordinator Mr Tanveer Haider and Pakistan Wetland Programme leader Mr Richard Garstang. Mr Riaz Ahmed Wagon (Conservator for Forests) and Mr Agha Tahir Hussain (Divisional Forest Officer) and their team played a key role in organizing the record attempt.

The record attempt started at 6:45 a.m. and by 7:35 p.m. it was all over. The previous record had been set in India: the 21 JAT Regiment (Indian Army) had planted 447,874 trees in the Shrigram Reserve Forest in Dhubri, Assam, on 12–13 June 2009. That record had now been broken!

Most trees planted in 24 hours by a team of 300 people

The most trees planted in 24 hours by a team (of 300 people) is now 541,176 and was achieved by the Ministry of Environment (Government of Pakistan) in collaboration with the Forest Department of Sindh and the National Bank of Pakistan in Keti Bundar, Thatta District, Pakistan, on 15 July 2009.

The certificate was presented to Dr Muhammad Iqbal Sial and Mr Rahim Bux Awan, Chief Conservator of Forest, Forest Department of Sindh, who were in charge of the tree plantation.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this event!

Ashrita Furman Becomes First Person to Hold 100 Guinness World Records Simultaneously

NEW YORK - April 14, 2009 – Ashrita Furman reached a milestone today by becoming the first person to simultaneously hold 100 Guinness World Records when he and over 100 participants earned the world record for “A Poem / Literary Passage Recited in the Most Languages.” The historic moment was a long time in the making for Furman, who has been breaking Guinness World Records for over 30 years. New York City Councilman James F. Gennaro presided over the event at City Hall Park in New York City and Guinness World Records judge Danny Girton Jr. was on hand to verify the feat.

Furman and over 100 members from the Sri Chinmoy Centre recited "Precious" by Sri Chinmoy in 111 languages including Afrikaans, Dzongkha, Kabyle and Picard. The group beat the current record held by the International Social Service of Hong Kong, which recited “Values on Communal Harmony” in 79 different languages on November 23, 2008.

      Presentation2.JPG

The proud record-breaker had this to say about his unprecedented accomplishment, “With more than 170 nationalities represented in New York City this record celebrates the diversity of our city. While it wasn't as physically challenging as some of my other records, having this record as my 100th is very special tribute to Sri Chinmoy.”

“What Ashrita did today is an amazing feat for him and Guinness World Records alike,” said Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records. “He has a 30-year relationship with Guinness World Records that is nothing less than stunning, breaking records around the world and proving that you don’t have to be famous to be the world’s best.”

New York City Councilman James F. Gennaro (D-Queens) added, "This is exactly the type of event that should take place in the seat of New York City government. To speak and hear the precious utterances of Sri Chinmoy is truly an inspiration."

Ashrita Furman has been breaking Guinness World Records since 1979, when he completed 27,000 jumping jacks to earn his first Guinness World Record.  Since then, the 54-year old health food store manager from Queens, New York has broken records on all seven continents, including completing the fastest mile on a pogo stick in Antarctica and bouncing the fastest mile on a kangaroo ball along the Great Wall of China. Furman has practiced meditation for over 30 years, which helps him keeps his concentration during marathon record attempts. Whether it be performing forward rolls for the entire 12-mile length of Paul Revere’s ride through Massachusetts or racing against a Yak in Mongolia to set the mile sack-racing record, Furman is a determined individual and a true world-class record holder!

  • Seeds Arrive Home!!

    • From: The Garden Foundation
    • Description:

(Pictured above: Brinks Guard Jackie Pilson returns the precious cargo Thursday to students at Winchester Public School.)

(Winchester) – It was top security.

They arrived in a hulking grey Brinks truck escorted by three OPP cruisers, emergency lights flashing and sirens heralding their return.

Armed guards descended from the armoured car, cradling their precious cargo sealed in a security bag.

Five thousand sunflower seeds which had been carried to the peak of Mount Everest last month returned to Winchester Public School Thursday to great fanfare and an eager reception by 175 wide-eyed students who had sent them to the top of the world’s most famous mountain.

The arrival was the latest stage of a wondrous initiative called the Seeds to Mount Everest Project, the brainchild of Winchester Public School Educational Assistant Jeff Arsenault. Arsenault organized the project with the help of a climbing team from International Mountain Guides (IMG) – a service that offers climbing tours of Everest. The plan was to inspire a love of gardening among the young through a novel event that caught their interest and prompted them to explore the hobby.

The students at Winchester Public will each be given one of the seeds to plant this summer. They will become part of a group of 3,000 students from across North America, including those at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and in New York State and Nevada, who have volunteered to plant them in their gardens to see if the recent voyage to the top of Everest affects their growth.

Arsenault said seeing the seeds return after IMG climber Justin Merle took them to the summit last month was overwhelming.

“It hasn’t really sunk in for me yet,” he said with a grin. “I’m just dumbfounded. Having been able to see it happen and now having the seeds in hand, it feels like quite an accomplishment.”

That accomplishment is the latest stage in a two-year effort by Arsenault to see the project through. He wanted to send the seeds to the top of Mount Everest as a learning experience for students and to plant a seed of love for gardening – a pastime that is Arsenault’s passion.

Students followed the voyage of the seeds up the mountain through a blog run by an IMG climber. As an added incentive to participate, Arsenault contacted Guinness and has applied to have the event certified as a world record for the most sunflower seeds sent to the top of Everest.

Now that the seeds are back, students from Winchester and other places across North America are being asked to plant them and then report back on any changes in the plants that may result from the seeds’ exposure to high altitudes.

Arsenault hopes the student volunteers will grow the flowers and pass on the resulting seeds – as well as the joy of gardening – to even more students.

Arsenault wants to turn kids on to gardening because he believes it creates a “peace of mind and conscientiousness about life”.

“It teaches them to be nurturing,” he said. “Gardening also teaches kids to aim high. After all, look what a little seed can turn into.”

Grade 6 student Brittany Cooper said that the arrival of the seeds in the Brinks truck was “cool”. She said a seed from Everest is just the thing to get kids involved in gardening, and plans to plant one herself this summer.

“It’s really fun to see what different plants look like and to watch them grow,” she said.

The seeds will be distributed at Winchester Public School, Morrisburg Public School and Kinsmen/Vincent Massey School in Cornwall in the coming days.

      World RecordMedia Release

      Immediate Release: April 15, 2008

Winchester Public School Sending Seeds to

      Top of Mount Everest

(Winchester) - Winchester Public School is making big news sending tiny seeds on a monumental climb up one of the world’s tallest mountains in a voyage meant to inspire interest in gardening.

Under the guidance of Educational Assistant Jeff Arsenault, students have launched the Seeds to Mount Everest project. The project is sending 5,000 sunflower seeds to the top of Mount Everest over the next few weeks with climbers participating in an International Mountain Guides (IMG) expedition. The school is working with Tacoma, Washington-based adventurer Eric Simonson, who helps run IMG guided trips to the top of the world’s most famous mountain and is currently leading a climb expected to hit the peak in mid May. Simonson is sending regular e-mails to the students reporting on the progress of the climb.

Arsenault devised the plan a few months ago as a way to help students take part in a neat horticultural project and to inspire a love of gardening. The idea is to send the seeds to the top of the mountain and then later redistribute them to elementary students across North America to grow over the summer months. Students will be asked to report back on any changes in the sunflower plants resulting from the exposure of the seeds to high altitudes.

“I’m always looking for a way to manipulate people into gardening,” says Arsenault with a grin. “I’m doing this to spread the message that gardening really is cool.”

He hopes the novel seeds will spark an interest in gardening among the younger generation. He wants students to grow the seeds into sunflowers and in turn pass on seeds from those plants to other students, turning them on to the joys of gardening as well.

“Gardening creates a peace of mind,” he explains. “It creates conscientiousness about life – a wisdom and ability to see things grow, live and die. Nowadays a lot of people are on a treadmill because things are going too quickly. Gardening is a tool for slowing things down. It creates patience, a sense of endurance and a wonder at seeing what you have helped nurture.”

Students at Winchester Public School are not the only ones interested in the project. Peers in Las Vegas, Nevada and New York City are also participating in the project after hearing about it on the Web. A special portion of the seeds will be sent to sick kids at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario to get them in on the fun and give them a diversion as they battle their illnesses.

      …/2

      -2-

Currently, the climbing team is delayed at a base camp near the bottom of the mountain after the Chinese government closed the north face of Everest until May 10 when the Olympic torch will pass through the area. Due to recent public demonstrations over Tibet, which have disrupted the torch run, the Chinese government is restricting movement of climbers until after the flame is through the area. The mountaineers will start climbing again on May 11 and the journey should be finished by May 31.

Arsenault is working on one other way to make the project fun for students. He has contacted Guinness World Records and will submit the project for world record consideration for the most seeds to the top of Everest.

  • The "Gamers Bible" Returns wit

    • From: GuinnessWorldRecords
    • Description:

LONDON (4th February, 2009) -  The globally-recognised authority on record-breaking achievements, Guinness World Records, announces the latest and greatest in video gaming with the publication of Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer’s Edition. As Great Britain experiences the heaviest snowfall in eighteen years, launch celebrations for the UK version are postponed until 11th February.

Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2009

Hailed by critics as the “gamer’s bible” in 2008, this year’s edition promises to keep gamers occupied for hours with 216 pages of original records, facts and trivia. The all new 2009 Gamer’s Edition encompasses everything from the history of gaming to individual scores and facts from all genres of video games.

Records include the Largest Virtual Army (America’s Army, with more than 8 million registered users – almost 15 times larger than the actual US Army);  the Longest Drum Marathon On Rock Band (26 hrs, 40 min); Most Controls on a Video Game (Steel Battalion, which features 49 different input devices, including foot pedals, a gear level, two control sticks and a button that activates in-screen windscreen wipers); Most Successful Entertainment Product Launch (Grand Theft Auto IV); and the Most Played Online Game (Call of Duty 4, with more than 1.3 million players daily on Xbox 360 alone).

Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, says: “Our intention behind Gamer’s Edition is to offer a snapshot of the gaming universe uniquely through the eyes of Guinness World Records – in a format that appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers.”

The book covers all consoles and gaming levels, as well as a special section on banned and controversial games (pinball machines were banned in the U.S. for 34 years), War Games (Metal Gear, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor), Superhero Games (Batman, Spider-Man, Superman), Space Games (Star Trek, Wing Commander, Star Wars). The 2009 Gamer’s Edition also features interviews with key gaming industry heroes, such as Ralph H. Baer, investigates the growing craze in healthy gaming, and offers Twin Galaxies’ leaderboard of high scores and fastest times.

Concurring with Glenday’s view, records manager and gaming specialist Gaz Deaves adds: “As with the amazing achievements in the main book, we are always happy to welcome new record breakers in to Gamer’s Edition and the Guinness World Records family. Anybody who’s dedicated to breaking a record in the video gaming world can contact us with a claim through our website www.guinnessworldrecords.com/gamers.”

To celebrate the UK launch of the new edition on the 11th of February, British eccentric motoring inventor Edd China will unveil his latest wacky creation on four wheels – the Fastest Mobile Gaming Rig. Complete with all three “current generation” consoles and monitors, this unique piece of mobile furniture will tour the streets of London with three gamers onboard after setting a speed record on the A40.

Also in celebration of the UK launch, the world’s Youngest Professional Gamer, Lil Poison (Victor De Leon III), is due to visit London for the very first time on 9th February. 10-year old, Long Island (NY) native, Lil Poison claimed the title after signing with MLG recruiters as a Pro Gamer at the age of six.

Today, on the other side of the pond, reigning Guinness World Record-holder Danny Johnson will attempt to reclaim his “Guitar God” status on Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock in New York City. Johnson will try to best the previous record of 899,703 points on Guitar Hero’s toughest song – “Through the Fire and Flames”.

Even prior to its launch, 2009 Gamer’s Edition received critical acclaim from with Kotaku, stating: “With entries for professional gaming, top selling games in history, the history of hardware and Guitar Hero, the Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition looks to be a must have for fans of gaming.”
