Helen Skelton triples current World Record as she reaches 1,000 mile mark!
Courageous kayaker, Helen Skelton, has tripled the current Guinness World Record for the longest solo journey by kayak as she reaches the half way point in her epic 2,010 mile kayak in aid of Sport Relief.
The existing Guinness World Record, set in 2006, stands at 326.98 miles and Blue Peter presenter Helen has more than tripled that distance, clocking up over 1,000 miles in just three weeks as she battles through her Amazing Amazon Adventure.
Super Skelton will have also set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance in a kayak in 24 hours by a woman - paddling her way through 75 miles of Amazonian waters in just one day. Evidence of both records is being sent to Guinness World Records for final verification.
Helen said: “One thousand miles down, one thousand miles to go. I know I’ve got a lot of hard work still to do but at least I am closer to the end than the beginning now. Every single day here is tough so all I can do is take each one at a time and get through it. I have been suffering with the heat, my shoulders are sore and my legs are covered in mosquito bites but I’m battling on.”
Helen set off on the 20th January from the start of the geographic Amazon, near Nauta in Peru, and is aiming to finish a whopping 2,010 miles downstream at Almerim in Brazil, where the river becomes tidal.
In order to reach the 2,010 mile target in just six weeks, Helen is having to maintain a gruelling pace, paddling around 60 miles a day with only one rest day a week - making this one of the toughest physical challenges ever undertaken in aid of Sport Relief.
A Guinness World Records spokesperson said “We are extremely pleased to hear that Helen has tripled the current record mark and we hope to ratify both these records as quickly as possible to recognize this fantastic achievement”.
Blue Peter hope Helen’s incredible efforts will inspire families across the UK to rise to their own challenge for Sport Relief, enter the Sport Relief Mile and help raise money that will change lives forever. Go to sportrelief.com now to find out how you can get involved.
Viewers are able to follow Helen’s progress with weekly TV updates from the Amazon on CBBC’s Blue Peter and a full round up of Helen’s challenge will be shown in two Blue Peter special episodes on 16th and 17th March, in the lead up to the Sport Relief Weekend.

NOTES TO EDITOR
1. Current GWR : the longest journey by canoe or kayak was made by Daniel Bloor (UK) who travelled 326.98 miles (526.22km) from Tewitfield, Cumbria to Little Venice, London, UK, from 9 June 2006 to 19 June 2006. Evidence of her tremendous feat is already being sent to Guinness World Records headquarters for verification.
2. New GWR category for the longest kayak in 24 hours by a woman on flowing water.
3. This is the start of the geographic Amazon where the Rio Maranon and the Rio Ucayli, the two rivers that feed the Amazon, meet.

It’s always a bit sad when an event comes to an end and none more so than the Winter X Games. From the kids doing all they could in the Snowskate Park to get in to the book, to the superstar athletes amazing us on the slopes, it’s always an awesome spectacle. We were keen to finish the event off as best we could and Winter X Games 14 did not let us down!
As we were told that there was snow coming in the afternoon it was important to chronicle as many records as we could before the weather got worse. And so…to the Snowskate Park!
Indeed, as the Park filled with youngsters we asked ourselves what challenge could these lads try and break? Of course the only answer was…the highest hippie jump!
Now although I did see quite a few hippies in Aspen, this does not actually mean jumping over a dropout from the 60s. No, a hippie jump involves riding your skate up to a bar, jumping over the bar as the skate goes under it and then landing back on it successfully. We checked and all the boys said they could do it so off we went.
The bar started pretty low but gradually jumped up. 10 inches…13 inches…15 inches…18 inches! There could be only one man standing of course and this happened to be Kyle Williams who virtually flew over the bar and landed smoothly back on his snowskate sealing his name in the Guinness World Records book. What a star! Congrats to him for really giving it his best shot and getting his name in the Guinness World Records book!
We had heard that amongst the snowmobile riders there was a legend who stood out from the rest. A man so unburdened by the 500 lb of machine he rides that he can literally fly. There can be only one man with this power and his name is Paul Thacker. After we had asked around and discovered he was in Aspen there was nothing for it but to go and introduce ourselves. The reason being that Thacker holds the Guinness World Record for the longest jump on a snowmobile, an astonishing 301 feet 5 inches.
Three hundred and one feet, five inches!
Are you kidding me? Nope. Thacker set this record in March 2009 and it has stood unchallenged since then. Fantastic. Thacker was a real gent and let us visit him in his trailer where we were able to interview him and take pictures as well as present him with a certificate for his achievement. Many thanks to you and your crew Paul and all the very best for 2010!
The last competition of the day was the Superpipe High Air Ski Finals, where skiers have 20 minutes to go as high as they can off the edge of the pipe. No record had been recorded yet for this so we knew whatever happened we had one in the bag. There were six skiers participating including Aspen local Peter Olenick who had suffered a couple of nasty falls in the Superpipe finals earlier in the day. The mark was set pretty high as the first skier went up and recorded an air of 20 ft and from then on there was no looking back. As the clock wound down the height went up by feet then inches until finally Olenick came down the pipe and flew in to the air to record a jump of 24 ft 11 in – HUUUUUGE!
The crowd went wild and as time ran out it was confirmed that the gold was his. We were fortunate enough to then get an interview with Olenick but the icing on the cake was when we were asked to present him with a certificate on the podium for the Highest Air off a Superpipe on Skis - a new Guinness World Record! Congratulations Peter!

Okan Bey'i kutluyoruz !
GWR Live! Roadshow'daki 12. günümüzden de bu kadar. Haftaya 12 Şubat Cuma günü görüşmek üzere.
Sunday,07 February 2010 is the twelfth day of the GWR Live!Roadshow at the Forum Istanbul in Turkey. Our challenges were the same as before.
Today only one record was equalled:
1) Most shoes sorted in one minute is 9 and was equalled by Ahmet Karaalp (Turkey)
There was one gentlemen who tried to break the record " Fatest time to undress a child". I had to disqualify him because he did not place the hat of the mannequin into the cardboard since this is part of the guidelines.
The mall was almost completely full. Today we had our special weekened challenge for "The fastest time to pack and scan 12 items" We had 11 contestants in total, I had to disqualify 7 of them because they did not follow the guidelines as required. The fastest contestant was Mr. Okan Bayindir with 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Congratulations to him! As a gift from REAL Supermarket he could keep all the items which he scanned.
I would like to take this oppurtunity to say thank you to Mrs. Mine who is our Archivist and my Assistant. She is doing a great job!
Since many records are broken so far it is getting harder and harder to break records.
This was my twelfth day on this GWR Live! Roadshow, see you up-coming Friday 12 February
My best wishes,

06 Şubat 2010 Cumartesi, Forum İstanbul'da GWR Live! Roadshow'un 11. günü. Denemelerimiz aynen devam ediyor.

Village People sang and 40,148 adoring fans in the stadium danced their way into a world record. Just certified this week by Guinness World Records, the largest YMCA dance ever was scored during the halftime show at the Brut Sun Bowl, in El Paso, Texas, presented by Helen of Troy, on December 31, 2008.
Danny Girton, Jr., Guinness World Records Adjudication Manager, announced today, “On behalf of Guinness World Records, we are delighted to certify such a visual, fun and monumental record achievement. A very worthy effort by all 40,148 participants and we welcome them to the Guinness World Records family!”
Village People has sold more than 100 million albums and singles internationally and remains as popular today as the group was in the beginning. They continue to perform to sell-out crowds around the world. The group’s biggest hit records include YMCA, Macho Man, In The Navy, Can’t Stop the Music, Go West and San Francisco/Hollywood. YMCA is, to date, their best selling single, amassing sales of over 15 million units worldwide (four million in the U.S. alone).
Today, 32 years after the creation of the group, the Village People legacy endures and continues to be reinvented through the six performers who don the iconic costumes that first captured and captivated the world’s attention in 1977.
They are: Ray Simpson, who replaced Victor Willis as the group’s lead singer/Cop character in 1979, beginning with the group’s cult hit film Can’t Stop the Music. Felipe Rose, who is the one and only Indian, and was the basis for the creation of the group. He is half-Native American and half-Puerto Rican. Alexander Briley, the one and only G.I./Military Man. David Hodo, the original Construction Man. Jeff Olson, who, in 1980, replaced Randy Jones as the Cowboy just after Can’t Stop the Music. Eric Anzalone, who joined the group in 1995 as the Biker/Leatherman, as original member Glenn Hughes began battling lung cancer.
With a global fan base and a worldwide tour schedule that attests to the group’s enduring and increasing popularity, Village People is thrilled to also be recognized by Guinness World Records.

The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel House of Cards Guinness World Records™ Attempt
190,000 Cards in 44 Days Guinness World Records-Breaking Attempt
Macao, Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (January 26, 2010) –
The Venetian® Macao-Resort-Hotel is proud to announce that Bryan Berg who holds the Guinness World Records record for the world’s largest house of
freestanding playing cards and the Guinness World Records record for the world's tallest house of freestanding playing cards, will launch an attempt to break his own Guinness World Records record for the largest house of freestanding playing cards at The Venetian Macao®.
Berg’s attempt to build a replica of The Venetian® Macao, The Plaza™ Macao and Sands Macao buildings will use more than 190,000 cards and take 44 days to complete. Berg will begin building Tuesday, January 26, 2010 and complete his construction Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at The Venetian Macao®.
Berg’s card structures will recreate intricate details of these icons of the Cotai Strip®, such as the Rialto Bridge, the Campanile Tower, and challenging curved shapes of The Plaza™ Macao and Sands Macao. Overall, the composition will be 10 1/2 meters (35
feet) long, 3 1/2 meters (11 feet) tall, and weigh more than 227 kilograms (500 pounds). The cards Berg will use in this record attempt, if laid end to end, would stretch more than 17 kilometers (10 1/2 miles).
Card stacking requires that the builder use no tape, glue or other foreign substances that would aid the construction of the structure. To prove that Berg complies with these rules, after 10 days of displaying the completed record-setting replica, on Saturday, March 20, 2010, Berg will have to publicly knock it all down.
To celebrate the world record attempt and knocking down of the cards, one lucky Cardstacker Sweepstakes participant who draws the Gold Million Card used in the construction of the structure will instantly win HKD$1,000,000.
Throughout the construction period, The Venetian® Macao and Bryan Berg will offer workshops for children, teaching them how to stack cards, as well as cardstacking contests on Saturdays at 3pm for the public, and 5pm for invited community children's centers.
“I was inspired to stack cards by my card-playing grandfather; maybe I can inspire some visitors at The Venetian Macao to try their hand at building their own structures,” said Berg. “This will be the most ambitious project I have undertaken to date, and there couldn't be a more fitting place to build the world's largest house of cards than at the world's largest resort hotel. Given the location of my attempt, I will work to capture the immense grandeur and beauty of The Venetian, The Plaza and Sands Macao.”
Visitors wishing to catch a glimpse of Berg constructing his record-breaking attempt should visit the open space in front of the ZAİA™ Theater between January 26 and March 20, 2010 at The Venetian® Macao.

His latest record-holding structure in the category is over twenty-five feet tall. In 2004, Guinness created a new record category for the World's Largest House of Freestanding Playing Cards to recognize a project Berg built for Walt Disney World―a replica of Cinderella's Castle. The mosaic which was made entirely from seashells resembled Dubai’s police logo which is a dhow sailing on sea waves, the mosaic was created to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the accession day of His Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to be the ruler of Dubai.
The mosaic’s length is 13.6 metres and it is 12 metres wide. Made entirely of seashells, the mosaic weighs 1700 kilogram and is 3 metres high. The 60,000 shells which were used in the mosaic were collected by personnel from Dubai Police who scoured Jumeirah Beach in Dubai to look for the best specimens to be used for the mosaic. The seashell mosaic was built in 32 days and 59 persons took part in gathering and classifying the seashells.
A ceremony to unveil the mosaic was held at Dubai Police’s headquarters. The ceremony was attended by Major General, Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police and senior officers.
At the end of the record, Talal Omar, the Guinness World Records adjudicator, announced the success of the attempt and presented The Guinness World Records certificate for the largest seashell mosaic to Dubai Police Chief Lt. General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, who declared after receiving the certificate that The police’s logo, which consists of dhow sailing on the sea, is reflecting our heritage. The sea was the only source of sustenance for the Emiratis in the past. So we decided to create a mosaic made of seashells to reflect that our history is part of our present of which we are proud of.
Congratulations to the new records holders.
This past Sunday, January 31, marked the 52nd time the Recording Academy gathered music’s best and brightest in one room and recognized the past year’s achievements at the Grammy Awards. At these, the most prestigious awards in music, it can feel like an artist’s greatest accomplishment to win just one (an “impossible dream,” in the words of Taylor Swift, winner of 4 Grammys this year), but there are some who have added so many of those coveted golden gramophones to their collection that they have joined the ranks of Guinness World Record holders as well as Grammy winners.
The big story this weekend was the 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson, current holder of 10 Guinness World Records. Sunday’s show included a star-studded performance of “Earth Song” featuring, along with a recording of Jackson’s voice, Celine Dion, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Smokey Robinson. In 1984, Jackson set a record for MOST GRAMMY AWARDS WON IN A SINGLE YEAR BY AN INDIVIDUAL when he won a total of 8 awards with his album Thriller, itself a record holder as the BEST SELLING ALBUM ever. Beyoncé Knowles took home the most awards in 2010, with 6, but did not win enough of her 10 categories to set a new single-year record. Her near-ubiquitous song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” was crowned Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Song.
The original moonwalker also has some very distinguished company among Grammy record holders. Here are just a few of the most notable Guinness World Records set at the Grammy Awards:
MOST GRAMMY AWARDS WON BY AN INDIVIDUAL – LIFETIME:
Georg Solti (UK), a Hungarian-born British conductor, won a total of 31 Grammys in his lifetime, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. He won his first Grammy in 1958, the inaugural year of the ceremony. With her win this year, Allison Kraus tied producer Quincy Jones in 2nd place, with 27 wins.
MOST GRAMMY AWARD WINS BY A GROUP:
U2 (Ireland) won 22 Grammys over an 18-year span from 1988 (Joshua Tree) through 2006 (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb). Both albums took home “Album of the Year,” and three other years the band won one or more of the “Big Four” awards (Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best New Artist). In 1987, the band joined The Beatles and The Monkees as co-record holders for MOST ALBUMS ON THE U.S. CHART SIMULTANEOUSLY (7).
EARLIEST WINNER OF THE “BIG FOUR” GRAMMY AWARDS IN ONE YEAR:
Speaking of those much-coveted “Big Four,” Christopher Cross (USA) swept them all in 1981 when in addition to winning in the Best New Artist category, his self-titled debut album took home Album of the Year, while the song “Sailing” garnered both Song and Record of the Year. Although the Recording Academy no longer allows nominees for Song, Record or Album of the year to be eligible for Best New Artist, both Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga were each nominated in all of the remaining “Big Four” categories.
MOST GRAMMY AWARDS WON IN A SINGLE YEAR BY A GROUP:
In 2000, Santana’s (USA) Supernatural picked up 8 awards. The album itself, a series of collaborations by Santana with other contemporary artists, earned Album of the Year and Best Rock Album, while that year’s most ear-catching single, “Smooth” featuring Rob Thomas, nabbed both Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Supernatural also holds the Guinness World Record for BEST SELLING ALBUM BY A LATIN ARTIST, as well as granting Santana the LONGEST GAP BETWEEN FIRST CHART ENTRY AND FIRST NO. 1 SINGLE (30 years) and the LONGEST GAP BETWEEN U.S. CHART ALBUM HITS (28 years). This year, Carlos Santana presented the Album of the Year award to Taylor Swift for 2009’s best-selling album, Fearless.
MOST GRAMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES:
Banjoist Béla Fleck (USA) has proved Grammy’s most versatile musician, earning 20 nominations and 9 wins in 8 different categories: country, pop, jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk, spoken word and composition and arranging. Her 9th win came in 2010 when “Throw Down Your Heart” nabbed Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
YOUNGEST GRAMMY NOMINEE – SOLO ARTIST:
At just 9 years 313 days old, “Miguelito”, born Miguel A. Valenzuela Morales (Puerto Rico), won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Album for Children for El Heredero on 13 November 2008. Now 11, Miguelito continues to record music. He released his latest album, Los Pitchers, in August of 2009.
Since their inaugural year, the Grammys have evolved from a modest 28-category affair at the Beverly Hills Hotel to the massive event now held at the Staples Center. With 109 categories, 18 performers, and even the very first 3-D awards show broadcast, this year’s ceremony was certainly one to remember!
What happens when up to 1,000 enthusiastic individuals dressed in sparkly bras, pink workout clothing and feather boas take part in a six hour exercise class? A whole host of achievements including two Guinness World Records and quite a few special moments as it happens.
The “Bust A Move” exercise event hosted by the IWK and QEII Foundations in support of breast health in Nova Scotia encouraged participants to raise money in order to earn a place in the days proceedings which included yoga, Pilates and zuma dance classes. The event ultimately raised more than $1 million towards the purchase of a new digital mammography machine for the local hospital.
Earlier in the day 313 couples took part in the first record attempt of the day – Most couples hugging for ten seconds, comfortably beating the previous record. With a little rearranging and orderly line forming, 617 individuals then earned a Guinness World Records record for the Longest Massage Chain completing the necessary three minutes of massage techniques without a pause.
For many the highlight of the day took place at 5pm. Ater a long tiring workout and with energy fading, Richard Simmons burst onto stage wearing his trademark shorts and bedazzled red workout uniform, and reinvigorated the room with his unique brand of humor and dance energy. Richard is so popular amongst the exercise community that one participant had recently received a tattoo of Mr. Simmons to celebrate losing weight.
On Thursday 28 January I was in Milton Keynes judging the attempt to achieve the most people to polish a car simultaneously. The attempt was part of a conference for the company ‘Tork’ who, amongst other things, specialise in cloths used by the F1 team for polishing cars. For the purpose of this event they had rented an F1 car. As it was a new category, Guinness World Records had set the minimum at 50 people. In order to qualify, at least 50 people would have to polish the car for 1 minute.

Shortly after the car was in place, the participants filed into the room and were ushered to their places around the car. I gave a short explanation of the guidelines provided by Guinness World Records and the attempt began.
I watched with the help of a few ushers and we all agreed that everyone had taken part for the entire minute. To the sound of cheers from all involved I announced that a total of 63 people had polished the car for 1 minute, a new Guinness World Records achievement.
