  • GWR Day: Most Weight Squat Lif

    • From: gwr_day
    • Description:

On the 12 November 2009 also known as Guinness World Records™ day, Shaun Jones was attempting to break his second world record in 8 days, during the build up to his attempt to break the record for Most Weight Squat Lifted in One Hour Shaun broke the record for the Fasted Hot Water Bottle Burst on the set of Blue Peter, smashing the previous record of 51.98 seconds set in the USA 2006, Shaun achieved an incredible time of 18.81 seconds.

The day had come after 5 long years of hard training and preparation for this amazing record attempt, Shaun who lives in Wroxham but runs a business based in Norwich, beat weightlifters from all over the world when he won his squat lifting class in the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation this year, and also won at the British Powerlifting Championships. Shaun said this was the event he’d been training for as it was a life goal to become a Guinness World Records™ record holder.

      SDC10202.JPGDSC01345.JPG

Shaun and his team had done a lot of advertising for the huge event to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

As the crowds came in to support their local hero he was warming up out the back with some light squats and a easy bike ride to raise his heart rate to get the vital leg muscles ready for this gruelling record attempt.

The stage was set, the crowds were in, Shaun was ready to start, on my signal Dominic (Shaun’s motivational coach and event MC) started the count down which got both the crowd and Shaun pumped up, Shaun started with a very impressive 240.4kg squat lift before moving onto 100.4kg for the majority of the record attempt.

      SDC10193.JPG

As the record was underway the crowds of people were cheering along to help keep Shaun motivated and focused on his target of becoming a Guinness World Records™ success.

I could see the drive and determination in Shaun’s eyes as he continuously squatted the heavy 100.4kg bar. As time went on it was clear this record attempt was taking its toll as Shaun was starting to look drained and tired as the clock was counting down, as the end of the hour approached Shaun was putting every ounce of effort he had into the last and final few reps, these could be the ones to either make or brake his life dream.

      DSC01349.JPG

The clock had finished and Shaun was unable to stand, proving he could of done no more, now it was a case of was his best good enough to beat the current record, this was set at 41,600kg, achieved last year in Russia by Sergey Rachinskey.

After confirming with the weight lifting judges how many reps were successful to the national powerlifting standards, I totalled up the lifts an it was my pleasure to announce Shaun’s final total weight, in the one hour period he had managed to lift a massive 46,798.8kg setting a new Guinness World Records™ achievement.

      DSC01357.JPG

Shaun Jones demonstrated both physical and mental strength throughout the whole record attempt, allowing him to set this incredible bench mark for powerlifters from all over the world to now try and beat.

    • From: gwr_day
    • Description:

In the lead up to Guinness World Records Day, Brits that tune into BBC1 children’s television programme ‘Blue Peter’, could be in for something very special.  On Tuesday 10th November 2009 Norwich born power lifting champion Shaun Jones will attempt to break the record for the fastest time to burst a hot water bottle.  That’s right; using only his breath Shaun will blow into the hard plastic container and literally attempt to blow the current record to bits!

      Shaun Jones and Big Dom

This is Shaun stood alongside his singing motivational coach, Big Dom.

The record is currently held by the American, Brian Jackson.  He managed the feat in 51.98 seconds at the Tahlequah High School, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, USA, on 13 April 2006.

We managed to get hold of some footage of the strong man in training:

Will he break the record?  Find out on Blue Peter (BBC1) from 16:30 on Tuesday 10th November!

      Interesting side note:

Blue Peter holds a Guinness World Record of its own for being the longest running children's magazine programme
Blue Peter (BBC, UK), was first transmitted from London's Lime Grove Studios on 16 October 1958 and celebrated 45 years on air in October 2003. Originally presented by Christopher Trace and Leila Williams (both UK), it has so far seen a total of 29 presenters, the longest serving being John Noakes (UK) who hosted from 1965-1978.

    • Description:

This month a few of us at Guinness World Records received a sporting treat courtesy of the Gillette Four Nations rugby league tournament who supplied us with tickets to the Australia vz New Zealand match at The Stoop last Saturday. For those of you who missed it the repeat of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final ended in a thrilling 20-20 draw with Australia running in a last gasp try to avoid defeat.

      Rugby League Four Nations

This is the first four nations tournament, replacing the tri-nations tournament which Australia won three times, the most wins of the rugby league tri-nations. Darren Lockyer was also on show but failed to score a try, almost surprising considering he shares the record (with kiwi Joe Vagana) for the most tries scored in rugby league tri-nations matches an impressive nine.

      October records

The month kicked off with a brand new record holder entering our Records Database in the Nuevo Estadio Jose Zorrilla, in Valladolid, Spain. 'Supersub' Iker Munian came off the bench for Athletic Club Bilbao to score the equaliser against Real Valladolid and secure his team a 2-2 draw. Aged 16 years and 289 days old he was the youngest goalscorer in the top division of Spanish football.

But after that it has been a case of the usual suspects tightening their grip on some Guinness World Records…

On 25 October 2009 Frenchman Sebastien Loeb raced to victory at the Rally of Great Britain for the second consecutive year to pip Finnish rival Mikko Hirvonen to the 2009 World Rally Championship by just one point! It was his sixth consecutive World Rally Championship the most WRC titles and the most consecutive. It was also his 53rd race win extending his record for the most WRC race wins.

      Sebastien Loeb

A week before that we had another serial record-breaker add a new record to his list. New England Patriots Tom Brady threw an incredible five touchdown passes in the 2nd quarter of their 59-0 demolition of Tennessee Titans. The most touchdown passes in one quarter his fourth Guinness World Record!

      Tom Brady

While we are talking NFL and multiple record-holders - if Brett Favre doesn’t have enough records already, he has now become the subject of a Guinness World Records attempt! Check here to see how the guys at Sportsnation got on as they attempted the most mentions of a name on a TV show

Also in last month’s blog I told you to watch out for Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final...by beating St.Helens 18 points to 10 at Old Trafford, Manchester, United Kingdom, they won their third title in a row the most consecutive Super League titles! Remember you heard it here first!

      October “almost” records

While the following are NOT records yet...we are currently researching to see if this incredible effort from Argentina’s Martin Palermo could be the longest headed goal in national top division football??

And as for the longest volleyed goal – Dejan Stankovic has put himself in contention with this amazing effort!

      What’s coming up in November?

The tennis season draws to a close next month and the traditional ATP World Tour Finals (the tournament formerly known as the ATP Tour Championships and Tennis Masters Cup) comes to London, United Kingdom for the first time ever. In the 1980s Ivan Lendl won the tournament five times, in the 1990s Pete Sampras matched him, now in the final year of the noughties, Roger Federer is hoping for his fifth title to equal the record for the most wins of the ATP World Tour Finals.

      Roger Federer

In women’s tennis the Fed Cup (a tournament formerly known as the Federation Cup) has reached it’s climax with the final taking place on 7-8 November. In this year’s edition Italy face off against USA with the States hoping to win their 18th title extending their record for the most wins of the Fed Cup by a team.

      What you did this month!!

As always we finish with some records from you guys - congratulations to everybody who set a new Guinness World Records record last month here are just a few highlights of records approved right here in Guinness World Records offices or in situ by one of our official adjudicators.

  • It's Back! The Original Guinne

    • From: gwr_press
    • Description:

London, UK (22nd of October, 2009) – The global authority on record-breaking achievement, Guinness World Records, today launched an exact replica of the very first “Guinness Book of Records” in a limited and individually-numbered facsimile edition available exclusively for purchase at the company’s website (www.guinnessworldrecords.com).

      The Guinness Book Of Records

The phenomenon of Guinness World Records began in September 1955 when the Chairman of the Guinness Brewery, Sir Hugh Beaver, decided to publish a volume of definite facts, in hopes that such a book would put an end to pub arguments. The very first Guinness Book of Records was printed in 1,000 copies with a plastic cover to protect it from beer stains and despite an initial skepticism from retailers (WHSmith ordered five copies), the book became an instant hit, was reprinted and reached bestseller status by Christmas the same year.

55 years later, the current Guinness World Records 2010 edition is published in 26 languages, 3 million copies and sold in 100 countries around the world. Although the popularity of Guinness World Records has remained steady for half a century the world that the record-keeping company measures has certainly seen some changes.

Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, said: “The world is moving at a dizzying pace and we’ve been there documenting and celebrating the changes for half a century. By reproducing our very first edition, we can offer a snapshot of the world in the 1950s and a true sense of how our planet and its inhabitants have changed in the past 55 years.”

“Guinness Book of Records” will take today’s readers back to a time when the most expensive bottle of perfume was Jean Patou’s “joy” from Paris retailing at 103 s. 6d. per ¼ oz (£225 per pint), compared to the current record attributed to the limited edition of Clive Christian No.1 Collection priced at £115,000 ($205,000) per 500 ml (17 fl oz); and the tallest building  was the Empire State Building in New York at 448.7 m (1,472 ft), which is nearly half the size of the Burj Dubai, “Dubai Tower,” which today tops out at a record breaking 818 m (2,648 ft).

Readers will also notice that a category such as “uncontrolled drinking,” which is no longer monitored by Guinness World Records, appears in the very first edition with record holders Auguste Maffrey (France) and Spaniard Dionsio Sanchez (Spain),  who consumed 24 pints of beer in 52 minutes and 40 pints of wine in 59 minutes, respectively. Other records remain unbroken until this day, including the largest diamond (a 3106 carat diamond found in 1905 in South Africa) and the tallest man ever (American Robert Pershing Wadlow 2.72 m - 8 ft 11.1 in). Not to mention the largest pandemic (Black Death in 1347 eradicating around a quarter of the population of Europe and some 75 million worldwide) - a record which thankfully has not been surpassed in modern times.

"The Guinness Book of Records" facsimile edition is available exclusively on the Guinness World Records website www.guinnessworldrecords.com at £25 in a strictly-limited print-run of 5,000 copies. Each copy is individually numbered as a collector’s item.

  • Fastest Baseball Pitch Ever?

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

In honor of the MLB postseason I would like to reference Noam Scheiber's excellent article in Slate called Why can't anyone throw a baseball faster than 100mph?

      Baseball GWR.JPG

It's a fascinating question, more so because the record for the fastest pitch has stood for over 50 years.  As cited in the article, we have the following listed on our database:

Fastest Baseball Pitch The fastest baseball pitch is 162.3km/h (100.9mph) and was achieved by Lynn Nolan Ryan (then of the California Angels) (b. 31 Jan 1947), at Anaheim Stadium, California, USA, on 20 August 1974.

Scheiber actually refutes this saying that he believes Mark Wohlers is the king of the fastball at 103 mph.  We love and accept the information subject to confirmation (!).  We are nothing if not here to stimulate such superlative research which we hope does turn the heat of discussion into light.

So as Scheiber asks, if athletic records have been tumbling in smaller or greater increments what's up with the baseball pitch record?  Being in the world record business it's a source of intrigue for me as it seems to be more and more difficult to tell when and where sports records will be broken.  Before the amazing Usain Bolt, we had no idea the 100 m record was going to be broken.  But it was.  Twice.  But Mr. Bolt and his 9.58 seconds aside, why hasn't anyone thrown a pitch faster than 100 mph?

Scheiber says, the 100-mph ceiling is not an illusion - "it's a basic property of human physiology".

Turns out that if a ball were thrown any faster than 100 mph it could literally rip a pitcher's tendons and ligaments from bone and muscle.  He'd throw his arm off!  At the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, biomechanical engineer Glenn Fleisig calculated that when a pitcher throws a fastball it exerts around 80 Newton-meters of torque on the elbow.  Practising with cadavers, Fleisig found that anything greater than that actually caused the ulnar collateral ligament (the bones that meet at the elbow) to snap.

      OUCH!!

I will leave you to enjoy the rest of the article (http://www.slate.com/id/2116402 - it is very good) but in the meantime, what are your thoughts?

Will we ever see the Guinness World Record for the fastest pitch broken in our lifetime?

  • Meatballs on Jimmy Kimmel Live

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

After a brief hiatus I resume my correspondence with all the wonderful Guinness World Records fans and it is fitting that I recommence my virtual communication with one of the more memorable records I have seen in quite some time.

What's round, made of meat, and goes rather well with some pasta al dente and a bottle of the most readily available Cab?

      A meatball.

That's exactly right.  but not any ordinary meatball, no.  If it's me writing about it and it's on this website you can bet your Valpolicella it's gonna have to be the largest meatball in the world, oh yes.

So we received word from Jimmy Kimmel that he was rather incensed at Mexico being awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest meatball (weighing in at the red, white and green corner at 109 lb).

"Enough!" said Jimmy and he started his own pet project to make the world's largest meatball himself and bringing it back to Italy.  Well, actually, the Italian American community in Los Angeles, California which looks a little bit like this:

      Jimmy Kimmel Meatball

What made the ocassion even more historic was that the meatball was to be unveiled in honor of the Festival of San Gennaro, that wonderful celebration of everything Italian.  So the stage was most definitely set to reveal the absolutely-positively-beyond-any-shadow-of-doubt largest meatball ever.

In fact here IS the stage:

But wait, along the way I had to say hello to a few friends.  There's not many opportunities to meet the guy who has wrestled with Borat in a most unforgettable way so when I spotted him I had to say hello.  Meet Borat Sagdiyev's agent, Azamat Bagatov...better known as actor Ken Davitian:

      Jimmy kimmel Meatball

On my way to makeup I had to give my regards to my friend Guillermo.  Not a lot of people know this but I've actually seen Guillermo in his underpants.  Actually in 100 pairs of underpants to be exact when he set the record on the show about two years ago.  He was very impressed with the Guinness World Record logo on my blazer and I had to fight him off with a bread stick or he would have had it for sure.  Hello again fully-clothed Guillermo!

      Jimmy Kimmel MeatballJimmy Kimmel Meatball

But enough hobnobbing and let's get down to business.  109 lb was the weight to beat and Jimmy & Team Meatball USA were committed.  Just in case anything went wrong three meatballs were prepared which were closely watched to prevent any interference from potential Mexican spies:

      Jimmy Kimmel USA

Jimmy emerged from the studio with Los Angeles Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda who had been nominated the official taster.  A frenzy ensued, no-one had ever seen such a large meatball before - Dios Mio!  But first Tommy had to taste it to make sure it was edible per the guidelines.

"It's great!" he declared.  The crowd roared its approval.

      Jimmy Kimmel Meatball

The stomach trembling meatball weighed in at a ridiculous 152 lb, 43 pounds heavier than its Mexican predecessor -  A new Guinness World Record!!

      Jimmy Kimmel Meatball

But wait, Jimmy had a surprise. This wasn't the largest meatball. There was another.  The crowd parted as four men brought out the monster meatball and slowly lowered it onto the scales.  No way!  NO WAY!  One-hundred-and-ninety-eight-pounds.  Yes, 100 and 98 pounds of pure Italian meatball...ANOTHER GUINNESS WORLD RECORD!!

      Jimmy Kimmel meatball

Good grief, I don't know if this has ever happened to you but I was, to say the least, all...ahem...meatballed out.  There's no way I can look at another meatball ever again in the same way.

You can watch the whole segment here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52ilVDDVDUk

Many thanks to all at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, always a pleasure to work with those guys, see you soon.

Congratulazioni per il tuo sforzo stupendo!  Mi hai impressionato!

How to set the Guinness World Records™ achievement for the largest painting made by footprints:

Step one; Roll out a few thousand square feet of canvas.

      Blank canvas for a record

Step two: Pour a rainbow assortment of paints into dozens of plastic trays.

      Record setting palette

Step three; Call in the local community, including hundreds of school children and residents of all ages.

      Three generations walk into history

Step twenty-five thousand; Secure a foothold on a new Guinness World Records largest painting made by footprints record!

Walk this way to a GWR title

Josh Rauch (USA), who works for City of Mission, Kansas, organised the record-setting event, which coordinated approximately 25,000 footprints onto 481.3 m² (5,181 ft²) of blank canvas and created a world-class creation.

Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Danny Girton Jr. was on hand to witness the 18 September record attempt, and award the city of Mission, Kansas, USA, with the Guinness World Records™ certificate to recognise the accomplishment.

      A step into GWR history

In addition to its record-setting element, the event helped Rauch raise money for Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization committed to improving lives by striving to provide 10 million impoverished individuals with shoes in the next 10 years.

  • Most Motorcycle Back Flips in

    • From: gwr_carl
    • Description:

On the 2 October 2009, outside the world famous Bernabeu football stadium in Madrid, Spain, an exciting record attempt took place for the most motorcycle back flips in 30 seconds in an event organized by the Burn energy drink.

The current record was set by Travis Pastrana (USA) on the 17 November 2008 in the USA with a very impressive total of 8 back flips; José "Loco" Miralles (below, Spain) knew he had a difficult task ahead of him to beat it, however, after training very hard in preparation for this Burn Unlimited Event, he was confident that he could do it.

      DSC01289.JPG

I watched José preparing the ramps to make sure they were perfect and the angles were precise ready for his takeoff, a crucial factor for his record attempt to stand any chance of been successful.

The event started at 9pm where crowds of people had come to watch this spectacular motorcycle show and to see the incredibly popular José. Burn had also conducted a competition to give a few lucky spectators the chance to win a brand new scooter. All the contestants had to run a circuit around the stunt ramps; the first to finish at the top of the main landing ramp was the winner.

      DSC01296.JPG

In the build up to the main record attempt, José and the stunt team was performed a variety of jumps, tricks and riding skills for the crowds.

      DSC01301.JPG

Unfortunately, José pulled a muscle in his leg during the exhibition jumps. Nevertheless, he was still willing to try and achieve his goal of becoming a Guinness World Records™ record holder; everyone watching could see how much he wanted to achieve this feat, however José’s leg was causing him too much pain and after his 6th back flip he was forced to retire from the attempt.

      DSC01332.JPG

Despite this, the Burn event was still a big success, and after watching the very talented and impressive José, I know he will be back to attempt this world record again soon.

    • Description:

Guinness World Records officially recognizes Walter Breuning, born on Sept. 21, 1896 in Melrose, Minnesota, USA, as the world’s oldest living man, following the death of Henry Allingham (UK), the previous holder in this category. Walter celebrated his 113th birthday at the Rainbow Retirement Community in Great Falls, Montana on Monday September 21st and to help celebrate his longevity Guinness World Records sent a birthday card fashioned from the official certificate confirming his record breaking achievement.

"It's incredible to think that Walter's one of few men able to remember when U.S. president McKinley was shot," said Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday. "And while he signed up to fight in World War I, he was TOO OLD to take part in World War II."

Walter is in good health and attributes his longevity to a good balanced diet that helps to keep his weight low and his mental faculties sharp.

This was the 5th anniversary of the annual charity marathon event, and this time the proceeds were going to Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization that helps young people develop their business skills. A total of 543 teams (2,715 participants) registered for the race, but who would claim the glittering prize of setting the Guinness World Record?

Starting of the marathonStarting of the marathon

The cheering crowd watched with eager anticipation as Team Jack and Adams/Zapata Roadrunners, Kibet Cherop, Rueben Ondori and Stephen Ariga from Kenya and Scott Kimbell and Derek Yorek from the USA, crossed the finish line in a time of 2:10.50.

Derek Yorek (Team Jack & Adam's Zapata) finish

"The Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay is a special event all on its own, especially with such a scenic course, so many enthusiastic and friendly participants, and the fundraising for an important cause," said Derek Yorek of Team Jack and Adams/Zapata Roadrunners. "We came out today in hopes of having a great time while running through some of our favorite parts of Austin – winning the race and earning a world record was an added thrill. What an awesome day."

      Winners receiving their certificate

This five-person team marathon relay included teams representing running clubs, neighborhood groups, local businesses, city workers and college organizations, with runners coming from all over the world just to take part.

The second place in the main event went to Team Jack and Adams/Misfits with 2:15:17 and the third place went for the Airrosti Rehab Centers with 2:19:27.

Winning the family division, Team Juarez finished with the time 3:22.47. Stephen Stein, Phillip Jordan, Juan Carreon, Jess Hager and Isaac Mora won the military division in 3:03.58.

“The relay is a one-of-a-kind event where you can run as a team, make a world record, enjoy the views of downtown Austin, and support financial literacy,” said Shannon Pleasant, director of corporate communications for Silicon Labs. “Participating is the perfect way to give back to the community, and we are so pleased to be part of such a successful race. “

All proceeds from the 2009 Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay benefit Junior Achievement of Central Texas, providing educational resources to teach financial literacy by local business and community volunteers that meet with over 16,000 area students each year.

“We are so fortunate to have such a strong community here in Austin,” said Dave Swincher, president of Junior Achievement of Central Texas. “It was great to have so many runners, spectators, volunteers and sponsors come out and support our cause and what we believe in. This relay is making a big impact on the lives of students in Austin and it is important that we continue our efforts every year.”
The race kicked off the start of the Austin Distance Challenge and covered 26.22 miles, divided into five relay legs.

    • Description:

One of the hottest tickets in entertainment was for a fiery 19 September spectacle in South Russell, Ohio, USA, orchestrated by professional stuntman Ted Batchelor (USA). Spectators of the evening fundraiser performance were treated to a full-on programme of premium pyrotechnics as 16 brave men and a woman united to help "burn off cancer."

      Well-suited to attempt a record

Fire licked off flailing arms and sizzling embers burned skyward off the fiery bodies of the 17 record-breaking volunteers; the excited audience belted out unrestrained encouragement to the record participants who marched on for 43.9 heart-racing seconds before their flames were finally extinguished.

      Here come the hot steppers

Guinness World Records adjudicator Danny Girton Jr. was present at the lakeside Plzak farm venue to witness Batchelor's custom fire performance and stilt-walking group “Ohio Burn Unit” and assorted local community members blaze a trail towards the new Guinness World Records™ title for most people performing full body burns.

      A cool victory

Event sources announced that record attempt proceeds were to benefit cancer research.

IT’S A BATTLE OF THE BANDS AS OASIS, COLDPLAY AND TAKE THAT SCORE ENTRIES INTO THE 2010 EDITION OF GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

Coldplay have cemented their status as one of the world’s biggest bands by notching up an impressive two new world record entries in the 2010 Edition of Guinness World Records published this Thursday 17 September. Their tune Violet Hill, which was downloaded 2 million times in a week starting from 28 April 2008, enters as the “Most Downloaded Free Track in a Week”.  They also grab a spot for their record-breaking album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, which became the “Best-Selling Download Album in the UK” with sales of      115, 000 to the end of 2008.

The Oasis legacy lives on with the recently split band setting a record for the “Longest Top 10 UK Chart Run By A Group” after an unprecedented run of 22 successive Top 10 hits in the UK. They are joined by Take That, who cap off a great comeback with an entry for the “Fastest-Selling UK Tour.” This was thanks to all 600,000 tickets for their 2009 tour selling out within five hours of going on sale on 31 October last year.

Other record-breaking Brits to make the final edit of the hallowed book include The X Factor’s Alexandra Burke, who notched up two record entries for her “Fastest-Selling Download Single in the UK” and “Best-Selling Single in the UK Chart in One Week by a Female Artist”.  In its first week of release Burke’s cover of Hallelujah sold a record 576,046 copies (physical and downloads) to snatch the record away from Leona Lewis that was set in December 2006 (571,253 sales in first week for A Moment Like This).

And in a sign of the times the music industry experienced the “Most Successful Digital Single Sales Year in the USA”. In 2008, 1.04 billion digital tracks were sold in the USA and the biggest individual seller that year was Bleeding Love by Brit Leona Lewis with 3.3 million copies sold.

And it’s congratulations to Sir Cliff Richard who sets a new record with the “Most Hit Singles on UK Chart by a British Act.” He had his first UK hit in October 1958 with Move It! He scored his 134th chart entry 50 years later with Thank You For A Lifetime in September 2008. It was also a record 123rd Top 40 entry by the British singer, who has sold over 21 million singles in the UK.

Across the pond, Katy Perry’s amazing early chart success sets a record for the “Best Start on the US Digital Chart by a Female Artist”. Perry is the only female artist to have sold over 2 million downloads for her first two releases: I Kissed A Girl and Hot N Cold.

Barbados-born Rihanna enters the record books as the “Best-Selling Download Female Artist in the UK” after selling over 2.5 million downloads in the UK from September 2005 to December 2008. She has scored UK/US No.1 singles with Umbrella and Take a Bow, and US No.1s with SOS and Disturbia.

And in December 2008, Circus topped the US album chart, making Britney Spears the youngest female artist in history to have five of her albums reach No.1. Before she turned 20 years old on 2 December 2001, Spears had sold an unprecedented 37 million records around the world, making her the all-time best-selling teenage artist.

    • From: gwr_carlos
    • Description:

On 9 September 2009, in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, the Guinness World Records™ feat for the largest air guitar ensemble was broken.

Brock University organized the record-breaking event as a part of its orientation activities welcoming students at the start of the new academic year.

      Celebrating the record

The air guitar expert Lance “The Shred” Kasten, who came from Baltimore, Maryland, USA, especially for the occasion, prepared the participants with a lesson on the art of playing the air guitar before the attempt. He then led the performance of the soon-to-be Guinness World Records holders.

      Air guitarists

A total of 1,436 enthusiastic student air guitarists then strutted their funky stuff and played their hearts out, breaking the previous air guitar record of 1,353 participants that had been set in Edinburgh, Scotland, just four days before.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Carlos Martinez was on hand to certify the attempt and, once it was official, the party continued with a concert, this time with real instruments.

  • The largest cardboard moving b

    • From: gwr_carlos
    • Description:

From the early hours of 3 September 2009, in Times Square, in New York City, USA, a team of Guinness World Records Adjudicators witnessed the construction of what became the largest cardboard box ever built.

      Largest cardboard moving box

ION Television wanted to attempt the Guinness World Records™ record for a mighty moving box to mark the premiere of the network’s new original series “Durham County,” which airs on Monday 7 September at 22:00 (EST).

Measuring 4.85 m X 12.88 m X 2.45 m (15.9 ft X 45.25 ft X 8.03 ft) the epically proportioned box is the size of an average studio flat in New York City.

Working throughout the night the box was constructed from materials consistent with those of a standard cardboard box but in a much larger scale. By 6:00 am the moving box was complete and measurements were taken before the official Guinness World Records Adjudicators.

Carlos Martinez was able then to declare “ION Television is the new holder of the Guinness World Records record for the Largest Moving box”.

      Approval of the record

The record attempt culminated in a certificate presentation by the Guinness World Records Adjudicator Carlos Martinez to Eleo Hensleigh, CMO of ION Media Networks.

      Inside the largest box

Once complete, the record breaking box played host to a contest between 20 individuals who scrambled amongst 100s of biodegradable packing peanuts to find the winning key-chain that unlocked a door too $100,000 towards paying off their mortgage, or buying a new home.

“What better way to announce a new original series about a family that is making a big dream move, than to break a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest moving box and giving a lucky family a chance to pay off their mortgage and own their home,” said president of ION Television.

  • Largest card tournament

    • From: gwr_adj_archive
    • Description:

In Móstoles, Madrid, September is the fiesta season, and what better way to kick off the 2008 festivities than with a Guinness World Records™ challenge? Móstoles City Hall organized a Mus championship in an attempt to break the record for the largest card game tournament set by 330 UNO® players in Charleston, USA, on 21 November 2006.

Mus is a card game played in pairs and its popularity has spread from the north of Spain all across the country. This was apparent from the long queues outside the Plaza de Toros in Móstoles, where 90% of the pre-registered pairs turned up to be a part of this record attempt. Those who didn’t appear were replaced by a lucky few reserves hoping to win the first prize: a Caribbean holiday.

      080910_card_game_1.jpg

The 512 pairs began playing at 9:30 p.m. on 5 September, which proved to be an unseasonably cold evening. By midnight, half of the competitors had been eliminated as the first round of the tournament ended. The mayor of Móstoles, a renowned Mus player who often partners Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas in tournaments, was knocked out in the fourth round, just before dawn. The final began at midday on 6 September 2008, the final two pairs conquering both tiredness and wily opposition to face off under the gaze of local supporters and TV cameras. The two young challengers, Raúl Moreno Horcajuelo and Javier Cuesta Muñoz – just 21 and 22 years old respectively – eventually lost out to their more experienced opponents, local residents Enrique Martínez Espinosa and Francisco Javier López Martínez.

With the tournament over, the prize-giving ceremony began. Arguably the most coveted prize was saved until last.

      080910_card_game_2.jpg

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Ralph Hannah presented the certificate for the largest card game tournament to Mayor Esteban Parro de Prado who accepted it on behalf of all the city’s residents.

Now Móstoles has her first record, there are sure to be many more to follow!

  • THE BEST OF THE BEST AT X GAME

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

      HELLO!

Day two of the world's premier action sports competition X GAMES 15 came and went in a flurry of activity and unprecedented record-breaking activity!

Yes, once again the record book had to be re-written as two more challenges were set and met by the friends and fans of X Fest and Guinness World Records.

The MOST BACKSLIDE GRINDS IN 30 SECONDS (17) and the MOST ROCK-AND-ROLLERS IN 30 SECONDS which was tied at 16 between two young skateboarders later that afternoon.

It all goes to show that anyone can be a record breaker and stand side by side with your heroes and athletes. They inspire us to try harder and go further. Guinness World Records salutes them and acknowledges all their record-breaking talent.

Here is a list of your superlative X Games athletes who have been an inspiration for all:

      1. Nate Adams

The longest Moto X dirt-to-dirt back flip measures 30.48 m (100 ft) and was completed by Jeremy Stenberg and Nate Adams during the Moto X Freestyle Finals at X Games 11 in Los Angeles, California, USA on 6 August 2005.

      2. Tommy Clowers

The greatest height achieved in the X Games Moto X Step Up event is 10.67 m (35 ft), by Tommy Clowers (USA) at X Games Six in San Francisco, California, USA on 18 August 2000. Essentially a 'high-jump' on motorcycles, riders must try to clear a bar placed at the top of a steep take-off ramp.

Five riders have earned two medals each for Winter X Games Moto X - Mike Metzger, Mike Jones, Tommy Clowers, Caleb Wyatt and Brian Deegan (all USA).

      3. Tony Hawk

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk (USA) became the first person to achieve a '900' (two and a half airborne rotations) in competition at the ESPN X Games Five in San Francisco, California, USA on 27 June 1999. The so-called 900 (named after the fact that the skater spins two and a half rotations) is regarded as one of the most difficult tricks in vert skateboarding.

      4. Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins

Lindsey Adams Hawkins (b. 21 September 1989, USA) became the youngest female to win a gold medal at the X Games in any discipline when she won the Skateboard Vert competition aged 14 years 321 days at X Games 10, Los Angeles, California, USA on 7 August 2004.

      5. Nyjah Houston

The youngest X Games athlete ever is Nyjah Huston (b. 30 November 1994, USA) who was 11 years 246 days old when he made his debut at X Games 12 (3-6 August 2006) when he competed in Men's Skateboard Street.

      6. Andy Macdonald

The most ESPN Summer X Games Skateboard medals is 17 and was achieved by Andy Mcdonald (USA) between 1999 and 2008.

      7. Mike Metzger

Five riders have earned two medals each for Winter X Games Moto X - Mike Metzger, Mike Jones, Tommy Clowers, Caleb Wyatt and Brian Deegan (all USA).

      8. Dave Mirra

The highest air achieved on a BMX bicycle is 8.07 m (26 ft 6 in) by Mat Hoffman (USA), from a 7.31 m (24 ft) tall quarterpipe ramp on 20 March 2001, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.
