  • GWR Day: Fastest time to burst

    • From: gwr_day
    • Description:

On Tuesday 10 November 2009 adjudicator Ralph Hannah was invited to BBC's Blue Peter the longest running children's magazine programme for a special Guinness World Records Day attempt. Powerlifter Shaun Jones of Norwich, United Kingdom claimed he was going to be quicker than the fastest man Usain Bolt as he attempted the record for the fastest time to blow up a hot water bottle.

      Fastest hot water bottle burst

Shaun had been in training for months and we had a sneak preview here first. But despite all his hard work, on the day itself anything could happen and there was tension in the Blue Peter studio as Shaun prepared for this extremely dangerous attempt. In order to keep himself focused and in the zone Shaun had been accompanied by Dom his motivational singer who planned to spur Shaun to record glory with his inspirational rap.

      Shaun, Ralph and Dom

Whether it was Shaun's training, Dom's singing, Blue Peter presenter's Helen, Andy and Joel's cheering or a combination of all three it worked! Shaun may not have been as quick as Usain Bolt's 100 metre record of 9.58 seconds but he can certainly burst a hot water bottle faster than Bolt can run 200 metres - Shaun smashed the previous record of 51.98 seconds by bursting a hot water bottle in an astonishing 18.81 seconds!

The lung-busting effort left Shaun flat out, literally as he collapsed to the floor. But there was no need to worry the new Guinness World Records record holder was just taking a moment to recover before accepting his certificate. What a perfect way to warm up for Guinness World Records Day on 12 November!

      Fastest hot water bottle burst

A MAN PULLING A DOUBLE-DECKER BY THE HAIR, MASS CHEERLEADING AND A GIANT GINGERBREAD MAN…?  IT CAN ONLY BE GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS DAY!

2 November 2009 (London, UK) – People around the world are getting ready to defy the monotonous month of November and break some wacky and wonderful records on the fifth annual Guinness World Records Day (12 November). Celebrated to commemorate the day in 2004 when Guinness World Records became the world’s bestselling copyright book of all time, Guinness World Records Day attracts hundreds of thousands of record-breakers around the world every year - in a true spirit of philanthropy and fun.

As in previous years, wacky and wonderful Brits promise to showcase their talent and raise money for their favourite charities on Guinness World Records Day. Among the dozens of attempts planned around the country, London will host the big comeback of 59-year old Manjit Singh who will perform a hair-raising attempt for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with hair (New World Record).  Also in the Capital, commuters will literally come together at St Pancras Station for the most people hugging for one minute (100), while hundreds will descend on Alexandra Palace as they attempt to skate their way into the records book for the longest conga on ice (107). In Southampton the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will team up with Justdance Salsa for the largest salsa dance (451).  Demonstrating his physical strength in support of the British Heart Foundation, “British Master’s Squat Power Lifting Champion” Shaun Jones from Norwich hopes to grab the title for most weight squat lifted in one hour (41,600kg) and the fastest hot water bottle burst (51.98 secs).  In Northern Ireland, Oaks Shopping Centre will celebrate Guinness World Records Day with a record attempt for largest human mattress dominoes (121) to raise money for Marie Curie cancer nurses, and Ballyclare High School will hold the largest sports lesson (250).   Meanwhile, Carr’s Glen Primary School in Belfast celebrates it 70th anniversary by organising the largest gathering of people dressed as storybook characters (NWR).

Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday says: “Guinness World Records Day is a perfect opportunity for individuals and organizations to raise awareness of their causes, and this year’s line-up of record-breakers is even bigger and better than last year. We look forward to seeing dozens of new records being broken around the world and welcoming new achievers in to the family of Guinness World Records.”

Record-breaking mania on Guinness World Records Day will not just hit the UK, as countries around the globe put their best foot forward with amazing attempts such as the fastest vehicle crossing of the Egyptian western desert, during 24 hours in Egypt, largest bikini parade (281) in Australia, and most nationalities in a Sauna (57) in Finland. Elsewhere in Europe, Rolf Allerdissen in Germany will brave the cold November weather in a record attempt for furthest distanced covered in 24 hours on a water slide (75.72 miles) , and Norway sets out to get into the Christmas spirit early with the largest gingerbread man (593.53 kg).  Across the Atlantic, the US will celebrate Guinness World Records Day with events including the largest cheerleading dance (225), in Memphis, Tennessee and most people lassoing simultaneously in Texas.

Now a global phenomenon, Guinness World Records Day commemorates the day in 2004 when the book became the world’s bestselling copyright title with a hundred million copies sold. Any records set on Guinness World Records day are short-listed for inclusion in next year’s edition of the book, which is currently enjoying a top position on the UK’s bestseller list. Information on the exact time and location of each of these events is found in the notes to editor. Some of the times are subject to change.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD SHATTERED BY CITIZENS ACROSS GLOBE DEMANDING THAT THEIR LEADERS END POVERTY
More than 173 Million People Gather at “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!” events, setting new world record for largest mobilization in history

A Guinness World Record shattered this weekend when 173,045,325 citizens gathered at over 3,000 events in more than 120 countries, demanding that their governments eradicate extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!”, now in its fourth year, has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest mobilization of human beings in recorded history, an increase of about 57 million people over last year.

“The more than 173 million people who mobilized this weekend sent a clear message to world leaders that there is massive, universal, global demand for eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals,” said Salil Shetty, Director of the United Nations Millennium Campaign. “In particular, we have seen citizens determined to show their governments that they will hold them accountable for keeping their promises to end hunger, improve maternal health and abolish trade-distorting agricultural subsidies. They will not accept excuses for breaking promises to the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, who have already been hardest hit by the global food, economic and climate crises they had no role in causing.”

In Asia more than 100 million people participated (101,106,845); in Africa more than 37 million people participated (37,848,412); in the Arab region more than 31 million people participated (31,394,459); in Europe more than 2 million people participated (2,102,121); in Latin America more than 200,000 people participated (229,371); in North America nearly 200,000 people participated (191,535); and in Oceania more than 170,000 people participated (172,582).

"Stand Up is proven to be a growing global mobilization, as well as an ongoing grass roots movement from remote areas and cities in so many countries, both rich and poor,” said Sylvia Borren, Co-chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), who attended several “Stand Up” events across The Netherlands last weekend. “These are the voices of young people, women and men demanding the eradication of poverty, and new answers to the food, economic and climate crises. We will carry this overwhelming message forward in the weeks and months ahead to influence both the Copenhagen climate discussions and next year's MDG review.”

Currently 1 billion people around the world are hungry and 500,000 women continue to die annually as the result of pregnancy and childbirth. The vast majority of these deaths are preventable.

The mobilization was organized globally by the United Nations Millennium Campaign, in partnership with a range of organizations including the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP).

The 3,000 events across every inhabited continent this weekend included:

In New York, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon lead schoolchildren in Standing Up on Friday.

In Bangladesh, civil society campaigners raised the call “National Unity Can Eradicate Poverty,” urging that a “Poverty and Hunger Free Bangladesh is Possible Now.” The Prime Minister led the nation in pledging to remain united to develop the country by 2020. At a rally in Dhaka, she called upon all political parties to jointly fight corruption and stabilize democracy.

Despite the typhoons that hit the Philippines just before “Stand Up,” 35.5 million people in the country Stood Up and the  “I Vote for MDGs” campaign, a survey on the issues voters believe should be prioritized by the 2010 Presidential candidates, was launched.

In Nepal the President read a Stand Up Pledge with members of the Constituent assembly at an event broadcast live on national television, followed by a concert in a large open-air theatre in the heart of Kathmandu.
In the United States, the Irish band U2 brought 50,000 concertgoers to their feet for a "Stand Up” moment during their October 18 concert in Norman, Oklahoma.

From Cape Town to Cairo and from Accra to Kampala, millions of Africans stood up in churches, mosques, schools, markets, streets and work places to  call on their leaders to end poverty and inequality. In Uganda, the Local Government Association joined “Stand Up” by launching a historic award to honor the best-performing local government. The inaugural award was presented to the Kasese District.

In South Africa, housemates on the hit television show “Big Brother” made passionate appeals to world leaders to end poverty and led the continent in reading the ”Stand Up”  pledge, collected food for disadvantaged children and wrote a song on poverty.  They called on African leaders to stop maternal death, end hunger and address climate change.

In Nigeria, legendary African artist Femi Kuti led over 60,000 people attending the annual event commemorating the life of his late father Fela Kuti, in pledging their commitment to campaigning fervently against poverty and injustice. Femi urged participants at the festival to be bold when holding their governments accountable, noting that Africa has enough resources to end poverty. Accusing African leaders of mismanaging public resources through corruption and poor governance, he called on them to focus more attention on programs leading to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

At Federation Square, Melbourne, a concert organized by Make Poverty History Australia and AusAID included a flash mob stunt and performances by entertainers including Diafrix, a musical group of African refugees.
Citizens of Papua New Guinea Stood Up for the first time this year, in churches and government buildings, with support from the government Department of Community Development.

In Halifax, Canada, citizens marched against poverty in a rally organized by Make Poverty History.
In Italy, more than 400,000 people participated in 200 sports events across the country. The people of L’Aquila, which was hit by a devastating earthquake in April, ran a marathon to show their support.
In Paris, the streets were invaded by 4,000 roller-bladers on Sunday proudly sporting ‘Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now!’ t-shirts.

In Spain, coordinated marches nationwide included a rally in Madrid on October 16 which was followed by an outdoor concert featuring Spanish rock bands.

Peru was one of several countries which used “Stand Up” to start a process of climate justice hearings aimed at gathering the testimonies of people whose lives and livelihoods are being destroyed by global warming.

“Stand Up” was also supported by the entire United Nations system, with events organized by United Nations Information Centers (UNICs) across the globe. In Egypt, for example, 25 million worshippers Stood Up in mosques, more than 2 million worshippers Stood Up in Coptic Orthodox churches and thousands more Stood Up in schools across the country, in a mobilization organized by the UNIC in Egypt.

Hundreds of people gathered on October 16 at the International Labor Organisation (ILO) headquarters in Geneva to Stand Up Against Poverty in a joint action with UNDP and UN agencies, led by ILO Director-General Juan Somavia.

The UN Millennium Campaign was established by the UN Secretary General in 2002. The Campaign supports citizens’ efforts to hold their governments to account for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.  The Millennium Development Goals were adopted by 189 world leaders from rich and poor countries, as part of the Millennium Declaration which was signed in 2000. These leaders agreed to achieve the Goals by 2015. Our premise is simple: we are the first generation that can end poverty and we refuse to miss this opportunity. For more information, visit www.endpoverty2015.org.
The Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) is a civil society alliance of social movements, international NGOs, trade unions, community groups, women’s organizations, faith and youth groups, local associations and campaigners working together across more than 100 national coalitions/platforms. GCAP is calling for action from the world’s leaders to meet their promises to end poverty and inequality. In particular, GCAP demands solutions that address the issues of public accountability, just governance and the fulfillment of human rights; trade justice; more and better aid; debt cancellation; climate justice; peace and security as well as gender equality and women’s rights. • Where in the World is Sultan?

    • From: gwr_kelly
    • Description:

      Saturday october 17th, 2009

Sultan's globetrotting ways continue as he visits the land of Vasco da Gama, Jose Saramago, Bacalhau and the fado - Portugal!  Read on as Kelly sends in another update about what it is like to travel around with the tallest man in the world!

      Sultan

Sultan began his day bright and early today taking in the warm weather in Lisbon, and as always, with lots of attention from the people at the hotel who wanted to take a photo.  He couldn’t even escape breakfast without someone wanting to take a quick snap with him, but it’s all in a day's work for Sultan who happily obliged!  After a quick break we headed to the FNAC bookstore at Lisbon’s Colombo Shopping Mall for a press conference and book signing.  Crowds gathered as he got out of the car surrounded by hoardes of TV cameras and photographers.  Sitting by a stack of about 200 Guinness World Records 2010 books, Sultan opened up the press conference by saying,

"Hello Portugal, thank you for inviting me to your country, I’m really happy to be here".

He went on to tell everyone listening that his Guinness World Records journey started in February of this year
when GWR came to Ankara to measure him three times and confirm his astonishing 246.5 cm (8 ft 1 in) height.   After that, Sultan explained, he waited patiently until September 17th when it was announced to the world from London that he was the new tallest man in the world!

"Since then", he went on, "I have travelled to places I only dreamed of, including Portugal where I am now!"

As the session was opened to the floor, the usual questions were put to Sultan...When? How? Why?  But one young 10-year-old boy put his hand up tentatively and asked "If you’re so tall, do you have to eat more?".  Big Sultan thought for a moment and then said, "I do eat well it's true, but if you eat more, perhaps you can grow up to be tall too!".

      Sultan Kelly Book

After completing the book signing and grabbing a bite to eat down by the river, Sultan headed back to the hotel for a fitting of his new suit.  And in the meantime - surprise! - his suitcase arrived from London.  Phew! He was sweating it there for a while, and so was I!  Everything he had received from the beginning of this tour – his first ever pair of jeans from New York, his tailor-made suit from the UK, were all safe and sound back in his possession.

That afternoon Sultan was interviewed by two of the largest national TV channels and newspapers in Portugal and then wrapped up the day being interviewed by three children from Visao, a national kids weekly magazine.  After yet another fitting, dinner was served alongside some much needed R&R.

      Sultan Lisbon

While in Lisbon Sultan and his brother, Hassan, also visited The Belém Tower which was built in the early sixteenth century in the Portuguese late-Gothic style, the Manueline, to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. This defensive, yet elegant construction has become one of the symbols of the city, a memorial to Portuguese power as it was during the Age of Discovery.

      Next stop - Madrid, Spain!

Most models in a fashion show

A las 7 horas los invitados especiales, incluyendo a Dalma Maradona (abajo) llegaron a el desfile de Muaa. A las 8 de la noche la primera modelo entro a la pasarela seguida por mas de 200 mas durante la próxima media hora.

Most models in a fashion show

Instead of preserving the catwalk as the territory of the professionals, Muaa invited fans of their clothing line to participate in a brand new Guinness World Records record, the most models in a fashion show. On hand for this attempt at Shopping Abasto in Buenos Aires, Argentina was Guinness World Records adjudicator Ralph Hannah.

Two weeks before the day of the fashion show, 8 October 2009, Muaa with the help of designer Ricardo Piñeiro had scouted over 200 girls between the age of 15 and 22 to allow them to realise their dream of being a model for the day. The Guinness World Records guidelines allow for amateurs to take part in this attempt but they must behave like professionals. To ensure this all the girls arrived eight hours before the show for registration and to take part in a modelling training course held by professional models. In fact that was the easy part, next followed the lengthy process of hair and make up.

Most models in a fashion show

Around seven in the evening some of Argentina’s best known celebrities, including Dalma Maradona (below), began to arrive at Shopping Abasto for what promised to be the largest fashion show ever. At 8 the catwalk was graced with its first model and by 8.30 all the models at the event had had their turn.

After the show Ralph Hannah joined the show’s MC Maju Lozano on stage to announce the result. Despite the big screen claiming 300 models had been on the catwalk, some of the models had appeared more than once so in fact the number was significantly lower. The minimum number of models needed to set a new record was 250. Muaa had managed to recruit a total of 260 models to beat the minimum and set a brand new Guinness World Records record!

Ralph Hannah presented the official certificate to the CEO of Muaa Tony Zayat who accepted it on behalf of everybody in the company and also the 260 girls who will never forget the night when they got to model on the catwalk!

Nothing could stop visitors to SkyFest in Edinburgh from breaking and setting two new world records – not even the dreich Scottish weather.

Ah, you have to love the Scottish summer: wind, rain, near-freezing temperatures… it’s all part of the traditional Scots welcome. And it was in this Arctic-like environment that I found myself adjudicating two outdoors records.

Being a Scot myself, the weather had no effect; nor indeed did it affect the thousands of guests at SkyFest – a giant carnival party thrown for all Sky TV workers and their families at the Highland Centre near the Scottish capital, Edinbugh. As part of the fun – along with carnival rides, coconut shies and the chance to meet Spongebob Squarepants – two mass participation world records were attempted: largest air guitar ensemble and largest rendition of "If You’re Happy And You Know It".

      New Picture.png

First up, on the Saturday, 5 September 2009, was the air guitar ensemble. Former UK champion, The Midnight Moses, was on hand to demonstrate the kind of moves that make one an air guitar world champion. Then the music began – Survivor and “Eye of the Tiger”, the perfect choice for big power chords, and one of those songs that make you automatically air-guitar, no matter what you’re doing at the time! Or how wet you are.

      New Picture (1).png

New Picture.pngNew Picture (1).pngResult: After a few disqualifications for poor effort, a total of 1,535 people set a new Guinness World Record!

Day two was the largest rendition of the repetitive playground song “If You’re Happy and You Know It…” The rain was coming down in sheets now, which at least helped to cover up the smell of the cows and pigs that blanketed the stage area. The crowd wasn't quite as large as the day before, but because this was a new feat, we needed just the minimum of 200 people to secure the record.

      New Picture (2).png

A simple song, it didn’t take the SkyFest audience long to master the words and moves. The backing track lasted five minutes – the pre-requisite length, as per the guidelines – so all it took to secure this new world record was putting the two together.

Once underway, it became apparent that the words on the tape didn’t quite match the words on the song sheet, but the singers ploughed on regardless, sticking to their words and singing over the top of the recorded music. So, yes, at a couple of points it sounded awful, but we got there in the end!

Result: A grand total of 755 singers and a second Guinness World Record for SkyFest.

  • Me on Yamaha R1 July 2009.

    • From: nicholas
    • Description:

I LOVE this bike and have always loved the Yamaha R1 since riding from Lillehammer to Paris and back in 2004. Out of all the bikes I have ridden this one had heads turning every wear I went this summer.

I actually parked the bike outside a coffe shop in Oslo and counted well over 200 people stopping to admire the R1. Out of them at least 80 took photos on there mobile phones...its a stunner.

My intentions were to reach Gibraltar on this bike this summer 3,700km in 35hrs from Oslo, was my plan but the autobane South of Hamburg was having a face lift and the traffic was heavy the weeks I planned the journey.

No excuses though; Ive sent out a few E.Mails Globally to get a track for a day and try and get some serious kilometers done on this bike...watch this space.

  • Most people hitting golf balls

    • From: GWR_Ralph
    • Description:

On Sunday 27 September, Guinness World Records™ adjudicator Ralph Hannah arrived in Madrid for a very special golfing record attempt. To celebrate Madrid’s status as a candidate city for the 2016 Olympics, the city wanted to show how passionate its residents are for golf, a sport that many Madrileños hope to be given Olympic status in time for the 2016 games. To this end, hundreds of eager golfers participated in a record attempt for the most people hitting golf balls simultaneously

The Guinness World Records guidelines state that the record attempt should take place on golf course, and in Madrid there is no better place than the golf course owned by the Real Federacion Español de Golf, which also plays host to the Madrid Masters tournament. Counting the participating golfers was no easy task, but adjudicator Ralph Hannah was dutifully aided by a well managed team of volunteers who registered all the participants.

      Registration Zone

Once the golfers had registered, signing a logbook and receiving a wristband, they were led in groups of 50 by their dedicated volunteer to a specified part of the golf course. To ensure the record participants were experienced with the rules of golf and golf course etiquette, only federated golf members were allowed to take part. This stipulation didn’t narrow the range of golfers who participated; from a four-year-old girl hitting alongside her father to retired couples, it felt that all of Madrid was out on the course enjoying the autumn sunshine. The next challenge was how to effectively signal to everybody across the whole golf course to hit their golf ball at the same time, but the organizers at Crow Legacy Company were totally prepared. The signal came in he form of three flares: one to get the golfers in position, the second prompting them to place their ball on the tee and line up their swing, and the third to hit the ball.

      Most people hitting golf balls

The first flare went up a little after 12.30pm and was met with a rush of excitement as the golfers scrambled to their marks. There was a brief silence as the second and third flares went up before the familiar sound of an iron making contact with a golf ball took over... only amplified 1,873 times. The organizers may have fallen slightly short of their symbolic target of 2,016 golfers, but they had smashed the Guinness World Records minimum of 200 participants with ease.

Ralph Hannah presented the certificate to the Managing Director of Crow Legacy Company, Angel Sanz, who accepted it on behalf of the 1,872 golfers who came out that Sunday morning to do something special together. All that was left was for everybody to make their way to the 19th hole to toast the success of the event!

  • LIVE! with Regis & Kelly - Day

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

      Regis & Kelly

Day two of our record-breaking week on LIVE! with Regis & Kelly dawned with an early morning attempt on the record for Most T-shirts Worn at One Time by an individual which had been held by the Belgians since 2008 at 227.

Stepping up to the plate was young Matt McAlistair who I had actually met once before on The David Letterman Show (how's that for name-dropping) a few years ago.

On this occasion Matt intended to blow the record away, he was going for broke.  He wasn't going to go for 228, or 229 but 240 T-shirts!  And what did that actually mean?  Well, it basically means you're going to place 200 lb of extra weight on your neck and shoulders and smile about it.

      200 lb of T-shirts.

This is Brian, the producer, before the show asking me where I've hidden all his T-shirts:

      Regis & Kelly Day 2

"Lights! Camera! Action!" but the TV version and off we went at 8am, an hour before the show as it takes about two hours to carry out the record.  All looking good and we're up to about the 170 mark.  On went the small, then the medium, then the large, then the extra large and then the extra extra large.

Here's Matt and his crew in mid-attempt while my trusty sidekick Laura Plunkett and I keep a close eye on things:

      Regis & Kelly Day 2

And then as number 177 went on something happened to big Matt.  The T-shirts started squeezing his neck in a way which wasn't good.  He was a brave fella and kept going for as long as he could but in the end the T-shirts won out.  Matt had to sit down and stop before the attempt went any further.  Quick as a flash he was cut out of his multiple short sleeves and was once again with us, breathing and full of color!

Matt being interviewed before the 'incident':

LIVE! with Regis & Kelly Matt McAlistair

Matt being interviewed after the 'incident':

LIVE! w Regis & Kelly Matt McAlistair

Happily, Matt was fine, just caught a little by surprise.  It seems the T-shirts were a little too high at the back of his neck which was causing him some discomfort and so he abandoned the attempt.  In good spirits afterwards, he showed me what the final T-shirt would have looked like, it took both of us to hold it up!

      Regis & Kelly Day 2

No matter Matt, you gave it a great shot and we thank you for stepping up and giving it a go, without you Guinness World Records wouldn't be here so thank you my friend!

In honor of Matt back in the office we decided to have a go at seeing if we could fit as many people as we could into one T-shirt.

      We didn't get very far...

      Regis & Kelly Day 2

The Guinness World Records 2010 book launch fun continues tomorrow when we meet ice man Wim Hoff who will try and stand in ice for as long as possible - see you there!

    • Description:

ANDALE! ANDALE! AJUUUA!  QUE SE OIGA BONITO!!!

      Mariachi 4

I lived in Guadalajara for several years so I feel fairly confident when I say I know a little bit about Mexico.  I had only planned to go down there for two years.  I ended up staying for six and getting married to a Tapatia (as their women are called) in the process.  So if you're ever in Mexico - watch out!

I have plenty of great memories about my time down there.  Lots of great friends too.  Guadalajara lends itself to this kind of thing because it's where every classic symbol of Mexico comes from.  The beautiful women, the wonderful and sometimes not-so-wonderful tequila, the fantastic blue maguey...and of course mariachi music.

      MARIACHI MUSIC...

As soon as it starts it is quite unmistakable.  The violins, the trumpets, the guitarron, the charro suits, there's nothing quite like it.  Songs of lost love, of horses, of women, of sorrow and joy, it is THE music to have a drink to.  Now I don't want to encourage anyone but at some point in your life, and only when you are old enough, you have to get drunk listening to mariachi.  It just goes.  Trust me.

But thoughts of getting drunk were very far from my mind when I travelled down there.  I had been asked to go judge the WORLD'S LARGEST MARIACHI BAND a record which had stood since 2007 in San Antonio, Texas at 520.

      Gulp.

Just in case you're not familiar, a mariachi band looks like this

      Mariachi

      And like this

      Mariachi 10

      And like this

      Mariachi 6

(Hey, dude on the left!  Stop staring at the camera and point to the certificate like everyone else!)

As you can see, the dress code is very strict.  No jeans or sneakers.  No baseball caps either but you can wear these

      Mariachi 28

You must wear very tight embroidered trousers and and short jackets which have real silver clasps down the sides, plus very polished boots.  Women can of course wear skirts like this smart little lady

      Mariachi 29

As I say, there's nothing like Mexico or mariachi.  It captures the imagination and makes you want to be in those old black-and-white Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete movies falling in love with Maria Felix.  All these folks were actually part of the attempt I was going down to judge.  Young and old were there as well as mariachis that weren't even from Mexico like these guys from Canada!

      Mariachi 32Mariachi 32

Or these little guys from Mexico

      Mariachi b9

As well as these young ladies from Houston, Texas

      Mariachi 26

Everyone was down there not only as part of the 16th International Festival of Mariachi but also to take part in the Guinness World Record organized by the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce

      Mariachi 27

They lined up to register for hours

      Mariachi 13Mariachi 13

      and hours

      Mariachi 14

and hours...no-one wanted to be left out!

      Mariachi 12

As the clock struck six it was time.  To the strumming and sounds of five songs played consecutively (rules state they must play for a minimum of ten minutes) they made the record their own.  To the sounds of La Negra, Cielito Lindo, Fiesta en Jalisco, Mexico Lindo and Guadalajara all 549 musicians played with amazing precision, a true testament to how much they wanted to make this a historic Guinness World Records moment.

      MariachiMariachi

Congratulations to Guadalajara 'La Perla Tapatia' for their wonderful accomplishment and giving me yet another great memory of my time in that great city!

      Salud!

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR SIMULTANEOUS YO-YOING
BROKEN BY MOLINA HEALTHCARE AND FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY

MIAMI, FL - (August 25, 2009) – Molina Healthcare and Florida International University (FIU) joined together on Monday, August 24 to successfully break the World Record for the most individuals to yo-yo simultaneously. Held on the FIU campus, Molina Healthcare and FIU gathered 557 participants to yo-yo simultaneously for two minutes to break the previous record of 493 yo-yoers set earlier this year.

“We are very excited about the record.  But as a healthcare company, we are even more excited about the opportunity this event provided us to bring attention to the adverse effects of yo-yo dieting,” said Michael Siegel, M.D., Molina Healthcare’s Vice President/Medical Director. “In January, Men’s Health Magazine named Miami, Florida as the ‘fattest city’ in the nation, so FIU and Molina used the yo-yo and the world record event as a visual to provide education about living healthy lifestyles.”

According to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the proportion of U.S. adults who are obese increased to 26.1 percent in 2008 compared to 25.6 percent in 2007. Obesity is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases including heart disease and diabetes. As obesity increases among all age groups, health risks begin to affect the lives of the young adults.

“University departments and services aimed at helping students develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle were available for students at a health fair held before and after the world record attempt,” said Dr. Kenneth Jessell, FIU Chief Financial Officer. “Our students learned the importance of eating healthy as a lifestyle choice and the event was a great way to start the year off on the right foot.”

Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday is, literally, on top of the world with two new records ratified in Shanghai

I'm typing this from the highest hotel room in the world. I've just eaten a beautiful (and very healthy) meal in what I'm sure is the world's highest restaurant, and am enjoying a glass of wine from the planet's highest wine cellars. It feels like I'm in heaven – and it's probably as close as one can come to it while enjoying the finest of earthly delights. So no, I've not died – I'm in Shanghai, the so-called Paris of the East, at the Park Hyatt Hotel, the highest hotel in the world.

For me, Shanghai has always been one of these places, like Zanzibar or Casablanca, whose very name conjures up all sorts of fantastical images – death-defying rickshaw rides through narrow alleyways dripping with freshly laundered pyjamas, roasted ducks hanging in every window, mah-jong games played on the landings of tightly packed tenements. Of course, the reality is not quite on a par with my boy's-own vision, based more on movie mobsters with slinky concubines and that fantastic opening scene in Club Obi-Wan in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; the very dull drive from the airport to my hotel was disappointingly like everyone other tedious airport transfer.

However, as one draws closer to the centre of the city, familiar images start to emerge from the fog (and indeed it's very foggy – a nice change, I'm told, from the usual torrential downpours and thunderstorms that plague the city at this time of year). The tops of buildings I always imagined were located in Hong Kong become clear; that strange exercise in geometry – the Oriental Pearl TV Tower – emerges; beyond it, the Jin Mao tower with its beautifully spiky pagoda-style exterior; then, the daddy of them all, the giant bottle-opener that is the Shanghai World Financial Centre (SWFC). It should be the New York of the East, if these remarkable towers are anything to by…

I'm here at the invitation of Mori Building, the Japanese company responsible for shaping much of this incredible skyline. The week I arrive marks the first anniversary of the opening of the SWFC and the Park Hyatt Hotel, which can be found between floors 78 and 88 of the building. So, not the hotel at the highest altitude – this is the Everest View, which can be found in the Himalayas – but the hotel at the highest point from street level.

And what a hotel it is! I've been to many beautiful hotels during my time at Guinness World Records, but this is by far the most spectacular. The views, of course, are breathtaking; but its design is also memorably beautiful, especially for a hotel in a financial centre. Every detail has been carefully thought out, every touch special. At just 174 rooms, it’s a relatively small, boutique hotel, but so much the better. Natural surfaces and colours abound; the halls are littered with beautiful art. In my dark wood and natural silk bedroom, only the Japanese-inspired digital toilet seems out of place – the instructions, thankfully, are in English.

The top of the SWFC is the highest roof in the world (it's a flat roof over the 101st floor, at 492 m (1,615 ft) above the street), suspended from which – at the 100th floor – is the world's highest observation deck. The views of downtown Shanghai and the Huangpu Pu River are spectacular – one of the greatest views on the planet.

For fans of skyscrapers, this building is endlessly fascinating, and the stats are impressive. The SWFC has 91 elevators, 44 of which are double-deckers; the whole building is supported by 2,200 steel tubing bearing piles inserted up to 78 m (256 ft) into the ground; a 150-ton counterweight is installed on the 90th floor to help the two tuned mass dampers (TMDs) keep the building from swaying; and the total floor space is a whopping 381,600 m2 (4.1 million ft2).

But for me, it’s not just about the numbers, as impressive as they are. It's about waking up to the sunrise over Shanghai from a bed at ear-popping 450 m (1,476 ft) up in the clouds; about knowing that you're currently the highest person on Earth – well, at least the highest person indoors and enjoying air conditioning! For a truly unique view on the world, there is currently no better place to be than Shanghai.

The city might have differed from what I expected, but it thrills in many other ways, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. Next on my schedule is a city tour for which I can't wait. I'm sure my romantic vision of the old longtang will be long gone, but in its place is a vibrant, fast-paced city that deserves its role as host of the forthcoming World Expo 2010. "You can see the future from here," said SWFC's President Mr Yoshimura Akio during the formal GWR certificate presentation on the 100th floor observation deck (the highest press conference in the world?), and he's right – Shanghai is where the future will impact on the world first. Make a visit as soon as you can.

Welcome to the re-vamped sports blog, giving you a monthly update to what sports records have been keeping us busy here at Guinness World Records and what we can expect to see broken in the near future!

      August records

In terms of record-breaking one man’s 6 ft 4 in frame overshadowed everybody this month. Usain Bolt (Jamaica) shattered his own world records set at last year’s Olympics in both sprint distances during the IAAF World Championships in Berlin. On 16 August he blew away the field with a mind-blowing 9.58 second run in the 100 metres a whole 0.11 seconds faster than his Beijing effort, which represented the biggest drop in the 100 metres world record since digital timing began.

      Fastest run 100 metres (male)

Four days later Bolt broke his 200 metres time of 19.30 seconds (also set in Beijing) by the same margin finishing streets ahead of field in 19.19 seconds. Bolt became the first man ever to simultaneously hold Olympic and World Championship gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metres.

      Fastest man everFastest man ever

Only one other world record fell at the IAAF World Championships:

Furthest hammer throw (female) - 77.96 m (255 ft 9 in) by Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland) in Berlin, Germany, on 22 August 2009.

      Anita Wlodarczyk

In Rugby Union the 2009 tri-nations is in full swing with the winner of the most tri-nations titles New Zealand (nine times before you ask) on the receiving end of  a record-breaking performance from South Africa’s fly –half Morne Steyn. On 1 August Steyn scored one try, one conversion and eight penalties totalling 31 points the most points scored by an individual in a tri-nations match to give South Africa a 31-19 victory over New Zealand in Durban.

      Morne Steyn in action

Incidentally in August 2008 South African winger Jongi Nokwe had scored the most tries by an individual in a tri-nations match when he ran in four against Australia for a 53-8 victory in Johannesburg.

      What's coming in September?

In September there is plenty of sport to keep everybody occupied. The UEFA Champions League proper starts on 15 September and a revamped Real Madrid with the most expensive footballer Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to regain their record of the most Champions League victories which was equalled at 77 by  Manchester United last season.

      Cristiano Ronaldo

The NFL season starts on 10 September with Brett Favre still playing, this time lining up with the Minnesota Vikings and likely to increase his record for the most pass completions in an NFL career by a quarterback which currently stands at 5,720 completions.

Brett Favre is back!Brett Favre is back!

The World Stone Skimming Championships takes place on 27 September on Easdale Island in Scotland. Contestants will be hoping to beat the record for the most skips of a skimming stone an incredible 51 by Russel Byars in Pennsylvania in 2007.

      What you did this month!

Here at Guinness World Records we approved several new sporting records from the fastest marathon on crutches (Simon Baker at the Dublin Marathon who finished in 6 hr 42 min 47 secs) to the largest open water swimming race (13,755 participants at the Midmar Mile in South Africa).

Also you can find out who set the record for the highest bicycle bunny hop below!
