    This month a few of us at Guinness World Records received a sporting treat courtesy of the Gillette Four Nations rugby league tournament who supplied us with tickets to the Australia vz New Zealand match at The Stoop last Saturday. For those of you who missed it the repeat of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup final ended in a thrilling 20-20 draw with Australia running in a last gasp try to avoid defeat.

    

    This is the first four nations tournament, replacing the tri-nations tournament which Australia won three times, the most wins of the rugby league tri-nations. Darren Lockyer was also on show but failed to score a try, almost surprising considering he shares the record (with kiwi Joe Vagana) for the most tries scored in rugby league tri-nations matches an impressive nine.

    October records

    The month kicked off with a brand new record holder entering our Records Database in the Nuevo Estadio Jose Zorrilla, in Valladolid, Spain. 'Supersub' Iker Munian came off the bench for Athletic Club Bilbao to score the equaliser against Real Valladolid and secure his team a 2-2 draw. Aged 16 years and 289 days old he was the youngest goalscorer in the top division of Spanish football.

    

    But after that it has been a case of the usual suspects tightening their grip on some Guinness World Records…

    On 25 October 2009 Frenchman Sebastien Loeb raced to victory at the Rally of Great Britain for the second consecutive year to pip Finnish rival Mikko Hirvonen to the 2009 World Rally Championship by just one point! It was his sixth consecutive World Rally Championship the most WRC titles and the most consecutive. It was also his 53rd race win extending his record for the most WRC race wins.

    

    A week before that we had another serial record-breaker add a new record to his list. New England Patriots Tom Brady threw an incredible five touchdown passes in the 2nd quarter of their 59-0 demolition of Tennessee Titans. The most touchdown passes in one quarter his fourth Guinness World Record!

    

    While we are talking NFL and multiple record-holders - if Brett Favre doesn’t have enough records already, he has now become the subject of a Guinness World Records attempt! Check here to see how the guys at Sportsnation got on as they attempted the most mentions of a name on a TV show…

    Also in last month’s blog I told you to watch out for Leeds Rhinos in the Super League Grand Final...by beating St.Helens 18 points to 10 at Old Trafford, Manchester, United Kingdom, they won their third title in a row the most consecutive Super League titles! Remember you heard it here first!

    While the following are NOT records yet...we are currently researching to see if this incredible effort from Argentina’s Martin Palermo could be the longest headed goal in national top division football?? 

     And as for the longest volleyed goal – Dejan Stankovic has put himself in contention with this amazing effort!

    What’s coming up in November?

    The tennis season draws to a close next month and the traditional ATP World Tour Finals (the tournament formerly known as the ATP Tour Championships and Tennis Masters Cup) comes to London, United Kingdom for the first time ever. In the 1980s Ivan Lendl won the tournament five times, in the 1990s Pete Sampras matched him, now in the final year of the noughties, Roger Federer is hoping for his fifth title to equal the record for the most wins of the ATP World Tour Finals.

    

    In women’s tennis the Fed Cup (a tournament formerly known as the Federation Cup) has reached it’s climax with the final taking place on 7-8 November. In this year’s edition Italy face off against USA with the States hoping to win their 18th title extending their record for the most wins of the Fed Cup by a team.

    Greatest distance run by a relay team
    The longest distance run by a relay team is 3,096 Km (1,923 miles) and was achieved by the 'Gillette Phenomenal Tour' over 14 days, from 21 September 2009 to 5 October 2009. Adjudicated by GWR – find out more here!

    Longest marathon playing baseball
    The longest baseball marathon was 48 hr 9 min 27 sec, achieved by the Jonny G Foundation Cardinals and the Edward Jones Browns (Both USA) at TR Hughes Ballpark in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, on 9-11 October 2009. Adjudicated by GWR – find out more here!

    The furthest distance covered on a jetski in 24 hours is 1,150 km (714.58 miles) and was achieved by Brett Kettle (Australia) on a SeaDoo GTX jetski starting at Manly Marina passing through Rosslyn Bay and finishing at Inskip Point, in Queensland, Australia, from 29-30 June 2009.

    Most golf holes played in seven days (cart)
    Using a golf cart for transport, Thomas Bucci (USA) completed 1,801 golf holes in seven days at the Albany Country Club, Voorheesville, New York, USA, from 14-20 June 2009.

    Fewest golf strokes to complete a marathon distance
    The fewest strokes taken to complete marathon distance playing golf is 494 strokes and was achieved by Jake Sand (United States) at Desert Mountain Golf Resort, Arizona, United States, on 28 May 2009.

    Furthest distance to push a scrum machine in 8 hours (relay)
    The furthest distance to push a scrum machine in an 8 hr relay is 37.92 km, (23.56 miles) achieved by U17 & U19 Rugby Squad (UK), at Shobnall Leisure Complex, Burton On Trent, United Kingdom, on 5 July 2009.

    London, Tuesday, 13 October 2009:- Today, it was announced that St Paul’s Cathedral will join the West End’s Oxford Street and Regent Street on November 3 as the third location celebrating the launch of Disney’s A Christmas Carol creating the biggest most dazzling start to the festive season that London has ever seen.

    The stars of Disney’s A Christmas Carol will illuminate London, getting the capital’s biggest ever festive season off to a glittering start ahead of the World Premiere in Leicester Square.
    Bob Hoskins will get the festivities underway in the very heart of Dickens’ London, at
    St Paul’s Cathedral, Colin Firth will push the button to light up Regent Street, and Jim Carrey will light up Oxford Street. Further announcements will follow about additional stars from music and theatre who will take part in the dazzling celebrations.

    As part of the evening’s festivities, St Paul’s Cathedral Choir will perform, joining London in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the biggest ever Christmas Carol sing-a-long. From tomorrow, people can vote at www.londonschristmascarol.com for their favourite Christmas Carol to be performed on the night. Once the votes are counted, and the crowds are gathered across London for the World Premiere and the Christmas lights celebration, the choir will join the capital in song as the record attempt begins.

    The inclusion of St Paul’s Cathedral as the City of London location ensures that the capital’s festivities embrace the very heart of Dickens’ London. The City’s streets and alleyways are home to many of the buildings that Dickens would have known and which are referenced in his works, including A Christmas Carol, which, in 1843 helped re-define the Christmas period as the festive season of goodwill to all and re-popularised Christmas amongst the people.  In the weeks following the start of the dazzling Christmas celebrations, a large number of events have been programmed by the City’s venues to tie in with this traditional festive theme and with Dickens’ work.

    The City event is sponsored by the City of London Corporation and the Cheapside Initiative, a partnership representing the vibrant Cheapside area.  Once one of London’s great shopping districts, it is set to rediscover its glory days of old when building developments including One New Change are completed later next year.

    Bob Hoskins who plays Old Fezziweg and Old Joe in the film said: “It’s a fantastic privilege to be involved in such a huge London event, especially as I will be starting the celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral in the heart of Dickensian London. The film is a fantastic achievement using ground-breaking technology and perfect for the whole family this Christmas time.”

A donation will be made to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (Registered Charity no. 235825) as part of Disney’s partnership with the hospital, to help towards an ongoing Disney campaign to raise an invaluable £10 million towards their much-needed redevelopment appeal.

    REGENT STREET
    The world class shopping destination of Regent Street was one of the first purpose built shopping streets in the world and today celebrates 180 years of shopping.  In 1954 Regent Street was the first European shopping street to have illuminated Christmas lights.

    ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL CHOIR
    There has been a choir of boys and gentlemen at St Paul's Cathedral for over nine centuries. The earliest records date from 1127, when the Bishop of London, Richard de Belmeis, founded what was the first choir school and made provision for 'almonry' boys to serve the Cathedral.

    The present Cathedral Choir consists of 30 choristers (boy trebles), eight probationers (who will become choristers) and 12 professional adult singers (or Vicars Choral): four altos, four tenors and four basses.

    St Paul’s Cathedral Choir has established itself as one of the major forces in British church music today. The choristers rehearse every day for their busy workload; which may be a Sung Evensong or the chance to sing before HM The Queen at a special service. Situated at the east end of the cathedral, the school combines its musical heritage with a pursuit of academic excellence.

    ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL - A HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
    A Cathedral dedicated to St Paul has overlooked the City of London since 604AD, a constant reminder to this great commercial centre of the importance of the spiritual side of life.

    The current Cathedral – the fourth to occupy this site – was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Its architectural and artistic importance reflect the determination of the five monarchs who oversaw its building that London’s leading church should be as beautiful and imposing as their private palaces.

    As the Cathedral of the capital city, St Paul’s is the spiritual focus for the Nation.     ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL – FACTS AND FIGURES
    • St Paul’s is the only Cathedral to have been designed, built and completed by a single architect. It took 35 years to build, from 1675–1710.
    • The present St Paul’s is the fourth to occupy the site on Ludgate Hill; the first Cathedral dedicated to St Paul was built in 604 AD.
    • St Paul’s actually has three domes: an inner dome, a brick cone that supports the lantern, and the outer dome ‘skin’. The inner dome is 225ft high with a diameter of 102 ft. The whole structure weighs 64,000 tonnes.
    • The golden ball on the top of the dome is six feet in diameter, with room inside for ten people. The golden cross on top of the dome is 355.5ft from the ground.
    • The crypt of St Paul’s is the largest in Western Europe, and unusually for a Cathedral, is the exact ‘footprint’ of the Cathedral floor.
    • St Paul’s was the venue for some of the nation’s grandest funerals, including Admiral Lord Nelson (1806), Arthur, Duke of Wellington (1852) and Sir Winston Churchill (1965).
    • The Crypt is the final resting place for many famous names including Nelson, Wellington, Joseph Turner and Sir Alexander Fleming.
    • Sir Christopher Wren is also buried here, in a very plain grave. On the wall at the head of his tomb is a plain inscription, in Latin, arranged by his son. It translates as If you seek his monument, look around you. Wren himself had not wanted a memorial at all.
    • John Donne, a Dean of St Paul's, was buried in the crypt in 1631. His is the only monument from 'old St Paul's' to survive the Great Fire of London. Scorch marks can still be seen on the urn on which his statue is standing.
    • In 1964 human rights campaigner Martin Luther King preached at St Paul’s on his way to Oslo to collect the Nobel Peace Prize.

    WOW!  Just when you think X Games can't get any better it just does...

    Los Angeles woke up to its usually cloudy self as we set up the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS booth and X Fest began.  Please stop by and check it out, you can win all sorts of goodies as well as get your name in the Guinness World Records book!  This year we're presenting the BMX PARK and SKATE PARK where we're gonna have a series of Guinness World Records challenges and athlete appearances.  

    So far LYNZ ADAMS HAWKINS, NYJAH HOUSTON (BELOW), BRIAN DEEGAN and JEREMY STENBERG are stopping by.  Houston is the youngest X Games athlete ever, he was just 11 YEARS 246 DAYS old when he first competed in X Games 12 in 2006, ridiculous.  I think when I was 11 I was still deciding what haircut I should have.  And I still don't know.  But more about that, and the athletes, later. 

    

    Our first day at the X Games 15 yesterday was a fun-packed, crazy day in which FIVE new Guinness World Records were broken.  Not only did we have new records for MOST WHEELIE HOPS IN 30 SECONDS (62) and MOST BUNNY HOPS IN 30 SECONDS (41) but two kids also set records for MOST FRONTSIDE 360 SPINS (6) IN 30 SECONDS and MOST SHOVE-ITS IN 30 SECONDS (14).  It sound so simple but these kids just walked up to the parks and without any preparation just did it.  Our MC Eric tried doing the Frontside Spins and fell off!  And yes, he can skateboard.  To all of you, we salute and welcome you to Guinness World Records.

    Our editor Craig Glenday was on hand also and made an acquaintance with a rather charming young bulldog called TILLMAN who was, well, you know...skateboarding.  Yes, turns out that Tillman is a four-year-old bulldog who actually pretty gnarley and likes to skateboard.  Quick as a flash, it was decided he merited a Guinness World Record so we thought we'd see how fast the young pup could cover 100 meters.  With a quick push of his back paws he was off with Guinness World Records holding the stopwatch.  Did he make it?  Did he fall off and scrape his little ears or did he stay on and cross the finish time in record-breaking time?  Check out this site for the next couple of days as you can watch the video right here!

    

    More to come over the next few days so stay tuned but on the competition side the big news is that Australian JAKE BROWN came back stronger than ever after this scary fall last year and finally won Gold at Big Air - congrats Jake!  In other news, TRAVIS PASTRANA got roasted by the industry, colleagues and friends at a special event at the Avalon in Hollywood.  They, well, ripped him a new one as they say but all in the best of spirits as they saluted this great living legend.  I had the pleasure of working with Travis on an episode of NITRO CIRCUS and he is a true inspiration as well as being a real gent.  Many thanks for the memories Travis!  Read all about it at http://espn.go.com/action/fmx/blog?post=4367017

    Ultra-athlete George E. Hood (USA) carried out the ride of his life on a stationary bike in pursuit of a new record for the stationary “spin” cycling marathon.

    Hood’s ride was called the Century Spin For Kiwanis Kids and was planned to benefit the children and young adults with special needs who attend Twin Lakes Camp, a Kiwanis Club-operated camp near Plymouth, Indiana. With a goal of raising $30,000 (£14,800) the event was held at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Burr Ridge from 7 a.m. on Tuesday, 10 July 2007 to approximately 8 p.m. the following Saturday, 14 July.

    

    The adjudication was sponsored by Audi of Westmont, a generous supporter.

    Scott Christie, Guidelines Record Manager of Guinness World Records™, flew from London to Chicago on Friday, 13 July 2007, on the fourth day of Hood’s five-day odyssey. Anonymous donations and sponsorships covered the cost of bringing a GWR representative to the event for adjudication.

    

    “I’m thrilled that we’re able to have Scott Christie here in person,” said Hood, who is a supervisory special agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration. “Through our frequent email correspondence, he and I have developed a rapport that goes back to December of last year. It will be an honour to have him on hand for the final push toward a record.”

    Based on GWR guidelines, when a GWR official is present to adjudicate a world record effort, there is an immediate decision on certification of the record bid.

    That decision is based on the same strict adherence to GWR guidelines that were necessary for Hood’s January 2007 spin.

    Upon arrival, Scott was briefed on the progress of the attempt and presented with documentation of Hood’s attempt to facilitate adjudication.

    

    George Hood ended his record attempt after an amazing 111 hr, 11 min, 11 sec.

    A new record was set at DreamHack Stockholm on Monday 15th June for the “most kills in Counter-Strike (Valve, 2003) in 12 hours”. The record is 518 and was achieved by Björn ''Threat'' Pers (Sweden) at DreamHack Summer 2009, Jönköping, Sweden. This new record will be shortlisted for inclusion in the next Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition to be published in Spring 2010. The Gamer’s Edition 2009 is already available and can be found in all the good bookstores.

    Gaz Deaves, Gaming Records Manager at Guinness World Records, said:
    “Counter-Strike is one of the most enduringly popular online games, and players like Björn are constantly striving to push themselves to new levels of skill and achievement.     6. Counter Terrorist skin have to be used on both sides. (So both sides have same visibility)
    7. No "duck" bind on mouse wheel
    8. No scripts allowed
    9. Freezetime 0 on the server
    10. After reaching 10 the result screen have to be pictured in combination with detailed written documentation.

    In the 44-degree afternoon heat of Dubai, in a very pleasant park by the famous creek, the Coca-Cola Middle East company organized a mass participation attempt for the most bottles opened simultaneously. The attempt was publicized using printed flyers and radio appeals as well as through the extremely popular new-media social networking sites. The organizers had a target of 500 to beat and initially it appeared as though the intense afternoon heat may have put people off as only a few hundred had appeared early on. However, with the start time approaching, over the hill came a huge crowd of people of all ages and nationalities, eager for a piece of Guinness World Records™ glory, to push the figure well over the target to a total of 760.

    

    

    As the intrepid jacket-and-tie-wearing GWR Adjudicator, Michael Whitty, gave a countdown from 10 to 1, the tension increased. On the command “open”, a huge hiss was heard as the bubbly brown liquid was released. The crowd then went crazy, showering all present with litres of Coca Cola! Another succesful record attempt was complete to add to Dubai’s impressive total.
