  • FAREWELL TO X GAMES 15

    • From: sclaxton
    • Description:

All most excellent things come to an end and so it is with a bag full of great memories that we say good bye to X Games for another year...but what a show it was!

      X Games 15 photos 001.jpg

Guinness World Records was there for everyone who chose to step up and take up the challenge of trying to get into the record book and we thank everyone who took part.  From athletes, to all the visitors to the Guinness World Records Skate Park and BMX Park.  To all those who stopped by to win a book or pick up a goodie bag, a big thumbs up to everybody who made it all so memorable.

We cannot leave however before mentioning a young man who chose to come to the booth and have a go at the Guinness World Record for most kicks to one's own head.  Yes, you read correctly.  The record for most kicks to one's own head in one minute is 77 and this young man decided he wanted to see if he could break it.  So right there, in the hot Californian sun, in the middle of X Fest and in front of our Editor Craig Glenday he gave it his best.  To say it was a crowd stopper is to say the least but as the seconds ticked away, the young man furiously kicked himself again and again in the head.  The clock stopped.  He stopped.  The result?  77 kicks made equalling the current Guinness World Record!!  As you can see below the young man was thrilled he had made his way into our book and was forever a part of superlative history - good on you sir!

      X Games 15 001.jpg

Halfway through the day I thought to myself that if there was ever going to be a day that I would ride a skateboard it was going to be at the X Games so I grabbed Craig and proceed to the Skate Park.  After a bit of huffing and puffing as well as some pieces of duct tape (don't ask) we were both suited and booted to hit the...er...concrete.  It seemed to last an eternity but we gave it our best and for 10 minutes Craig and I enjoyed the thrills and spills of riding a skateboard for the very first time.  We were both excellent I have to say, up until the point where my skateboard crashed into Craig's as he was just about to launch himself into an amazing sequence of 360-mctwists-double-ketchup-swifty-fakies.  Oh!  How we are more in awe now of all the young boys and girls who seem to ride these little boards with four wheels with such grace!

      Gnarly Craig & Stuart.jpg

An impromptu Guinness World Record attempt also took place at the Mattel Fingerboard booth in which if you sent a message to a particular number you received an X Games 15 fingerboard.  They wanted to go for the most people simultaneously texting.  After some rallying from the MC, around 37 texters turned up and pressed "Send" all at the same time.  Not a big number but good enough to start the record off...I wonder how many will there be the next time it's attempted?

      X Games 15

And that was that.  The hot sun, the crowds, the amazing level of athletes, the sights and sounds (and smells!) of X Games 15 gradually faded away and we were left to put away our booth in the quiet Los Angeles sunshine.  What a fantastic event it was.  Many thanks not only to all the X Games staff who were there but also GWR's own Laura, Michael, David, Paul, Dan and of course Craig (sadly missing from the photo above) who gave it their all this year and helped to make it one of the most memorable years for Guinness World Records at X Games ever!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY X GAMES!  HERE'S TO ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING 15 YEARS!!

    • Description:

      HELLO AGAIN!

So Saturday is traditionally the busiest day during X Games and this year it proved to be the same as thousands of people streamed into the Home Depot Center to get their action sports fix.

In temperatures which were in the 90s fans and friends of X Games and Guinness World Records stopped by to see what was going on.  Many of those that came by walked away with a Gamer's Edition 2009 book which we were giving away every hour as well as some other goodies like T-shirts and pencil cases.  Many thanks to all who dropped by, it's always great to meet fans of our book in person!  And please don't forget to upload any photographs to our site so you can win a copy of the new Guinness World Records 2010 book out in September later this year!

The most exciting part of the day was when some athletes visited us.  First to arrive was Andy Macdonald who holds the record for most skateboarding X Games medals ever and has competed in every single X Games.  We took some photos, asked him a few questions and presented him with his certificate.  A true legend and a gentleman as well, many thanks Andy.

      X Games 15 photos 003.jpg

Another skateboarding star to come by was Lynz Adams Hawkins who had just won another gold medal at X Games.  She told me that when friends visit her room they look at all her medals (she has a lot!) but the most thing they get excited about is the Guinness World Records certificate for youngest female X Games gold medallist hanging underneath them - many thanks Lynz, you are a real star!

Have you ever tried to do a 100 ft backflip?  No, well we know someone who has and his name is Nate Adams.  Just hours before heading to compete in Moto X Freestyle Nate also stopped by and allowed us to take some photographs.  Another great guy and turly knows the meaning of the word "gnarly"!  Many thanks Adam!

Last but not least, Brian Deegan from the Metal Mulisha came over as well and told us how thrilled he was to receive his certificate for most Winter X Moto X best trick medals because he got the record after coming back from a tough fall to win his second gold medal a few years ago.  No-one has more golds in the competition than him.  We were excited to hear how he is now turning his attention to rally racing so we wish him all the very best as he makes the transition from two wheels to four wheels - good luck Brian!

      X Games 15 photos 004.jpg

Later in the day we also had another Guinness World Record competition and a young lad called Ivan set two Guinness World Records - MOST HEEL FLIPS IN 30 SECONDS and MOST NOLLIES IN 30 SECONDS.  Congratulations Ivan!

And that's your lot although we should let you know that later in the day Andy Macdonald won yet another medal for Skateboard Vert (bronze) increasing his tally from 17 X Games medals to 18 - Amazing!

Stay tuned for more updates from the fans and athletes as we head into the final day of X Games 15!

      HELLO!

Day two of the world's premier action sports competition X GAMES 15 came and went in a flurry of activity and unprecedented record-breaking activity!

Yes, once again the record book had to be re-written as two more challenges were set and met by the friends and fans of X Fest and Guinness World Records.

    • Description:

Hi all, just to introduce myself, I am Ralph Hannah and I’m the Sports Records Manager here at Guinness World Records. In practice that means I am researching, reviewing and finding new sports records every day and I decided it is high time I share some of those records with you! Every Friday I will be previewing potential record-breaking sporting events and keeping you up to date with major sports records broken during the week. Also if you guys think a record has been broken and we have missed it, then let me know by replying below, maybe you will see it on the blog next week!

This week has been an exciting week for everybody at Guinness World Records as the 2009 edition was released across the globe. This year there are 56 pages packed with updated and NEW records like the Longest time spinning a basketball on one toe (p.194) , Highest paid football manager (p.200), Most skateboard tricks invented (p.216) and many, many more. There is something for every sports fan so get out there and get the book!!

The major event of the weekend is clearly golf’s Ryder Cup as Europe and the United States lock horns at the Valhalla Golf Club, Kentucky, United States. Europe are aiming for their fourth consecutive Ryder Cup but they still fall well short of the record for most consecutive wins of the Ryder Cup which stands at seven, achieved on two occasions by the United States from 1935-1955 and 1971-1983. However in Nick Faldo, Europe have a record-breaking captain. Faldo holds the record for Ryder Cup match wins by an individual , 23 from 46 played, and points scored with 25, having halved 4 other matches.

In tennis keep an eye on Team USA in the Davis Cup, they are gunning for a 33 rd title to extend their record most wins of the Davis Cup by a team. Semi-Final opponents Spain will be difficult to beat on their favoured surface though, world number one Rafa Nadal has the record for the most consecutive clay-court, men's singles tennis-match wins when he won his 60th game in a row, when he beat Roger Federer (Switzerland) in the final of the French Open on 11 June 2006.

And finally, a round up of just some of the sports records broken last week:

      • In rugby union New Zealand defeated Australia 28 – 24 in a thrilling game in Brisbane, Australia. The win handed the ‘All Blacks’ their fourth straight Tri-Nations title, the most consecutive wins of the rugby union Tri-Nations.
      • Last week’s Formula One Grand Prix in Monza, Italy produced a shock as Toro Rosso won their maiden Grand Prix. German driver, Sebastain Vettel, became the youngest driver to win a Formula One World Championship race aged 21 years 72 days.
      • You the public set 8 new Guinness World Records last week in a variety of sports. If you think you can break a record then make a claim with us online here www.guinnessworldrecords.com/regis ter/login.aspx
