Guinness World Records will be on hand to ratify 17-year-old Mike Perham's astonishing achievement of becoming the youngest person to sail solo around the world, when the British sailor returns to Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth on Saturday August 29.
This will not be the first time that Mike Perham from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire has been credited by Guinness World Records. Back in January 2007, he became the youngest person to sail solo across the Atlantic at the age of 14.
Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, said: “This is another incredible achievement, and it marks Mike as the consummate record-breaker - someone who’s continually prepared to set themselves new and more challenging goals. Even the most experienced of sailors would be tested by the mental and physical stamina required to achieve a record of this magnitude. The fact that Mike achieved it at such a young age is a testament to his courage and unparalleled sense of adventure.”
Mike set out on his latest solo adventure from Gunwharf Quay on 15th November 2008 and crossed the traditional Ushant/Lizard line for marking the start (and finish) of sailing circumnavigations from the Western Approaches, on the 18th November 2008 aboard his 50ft yacht TotallyMoney.com at the age of 16 years 247 days.
His 30,000 mile circumnavigation has taken him via Cascaise (Portugal), Las Palmas, (Canaries) Cape Town (South Africa), Hobart (Australia), Auckland (New Zealand) and Panama. Barring any last minute problems, he is due to re-cross the Ushant/Lizard line some time on 27th August 2009 and be greeted back by family, friends and well-wishers to Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth at 11:00am on Saturday 29th August, having spent 158 days at sea.
Mike Perham will be available for interviews on arrival at Gunwharf Quay, Portsmouth.

Like Mickey Mouse and the cowboy hat, baseball is one of the American institutions. And St Louis likes to regard itself as America's number-one baseball city. They are crazy about the game there, and boast one of the best teams around in the St Louis Cardinals.
The fantastic guys from the men’s senior baseball league decided that the record for the world’s longest baseball marathon needed to be held in St Louis. A terrifying target of just over 30 hours had been set in Nebraska last year and these bad boys wanted to shoot it down!
The two teams were allowed 20 players each – and, crucially, all members of the teams had to be present for the whole period, whether on the field or not. These players would need some stamina and a lot of caffeine! Official umpires were present and the game took place in a lovely minor league stadium just outside the city. All sponsorship proceeds were going to a famous boys club in the city that helps underprivileged kids.
Guinness World Records™ Adjudicator Michael Whitty arrived around lunchtime on 13 October 2007, but the teams had been playing for five hours already. Worryingly, it was raining and the groundsman was talking about stopping the game. This would have meant disaster and the end of the attempt, but luckily the rain cleared away after a couple of hours. Michael viewed the video of the start and checked all the time-keeping equipment and log books; all was well.
As these guys batted on through the night they continued to show a real passion and dedication to the sport, remaining very competitive. They all went a little crazy at around 2 a.m. and started shouting at each other, but it was all in the spirit of the game! Come the morning, everyone looked exhausted. The sun was now shining and a decent crowd had arrived, making for a great atmosphere as they closed in on the record.
Afterwards, Michael reflected that everyone was genuinely excited and appreciative of his coming all the way from London to be there – so much so that it almost became overwhelming. He spent a lot of the day doing interviews with the local TV, radio and papers. The rest of the day was spent watching baseball in the sunshine and chatting away to hundreds of people who all wanted him to pose for pictures with their families, and asking him to speak in “that cute English way”!
When they broke the Nebraska record, a huge cheer went up and Michael was urged to announce it on the stadium PA (“And now all the way from London, England…”). They then played on for a further two-and-a-half hours, setting a new record of 32 hr, 29 min, 25 sec. Big emotional hugs all round and Michael took to the field with the certificate and did a little speech of admiration for these amazingly committed players. In return, they gave him a signed bat, ball and shirt. Afterwards, Michael and the boys had a few beers in the locker room and he regaled the assembled players with tales of crazy record holders. He even tried to explain the rules of cricket to them for a while.
Then his big moment arrived. Michael got Larry the baseball coach to pitch to him on the actual stadium field and hit a couple of balls with his new bat. He pronounced the experience to be “Totally awesome!” and is now considering leaving Guinness World Records to become a star batsman for the St Louis Cardinals.
